We introduce a linear measurement-based method for interference estimation in wireless mesh networks. The approach is based on measuring the channel occupancy and requires only O(n) measurements for a network with n nodes, thus making it suitable for large network deployments. We show, how we utilize the carrier sensing mechanism of commodity IEEE 802.11 hardware to measure the channel occupancy. Based on the measurements, we develop the Channel Occupancy Interference Model (COIM). The model is validated in the DES-Testbed, a wireless mesh network with 128 multi-radio network nodes at the Freie Universität Berlin. The validation shows, that the model is capable of predicting interfering nodes in the communication and also in the interference range. Additionally, our evaluation shows that the often used 2-hop interference model is too pessimistic for indoor network deployments, about 60% of the 2-hop neighbors are not interferers in our set-up. © 2012 IEEE.

Platooning, the idea of cars autonomously following their leaders to form a road train, has huge potentials to improve traffic flow efficiency and, most importantly, road traffic safety. Wireless communication is a fundamental building block - it is needed to manage and to maintain the platoons. To keep the system stable, strict constraints in terms of update frequency and reliability must be met. We developed communication strategies by explicitly taking into account the requirements of the controller, exploiting synchronized communication slots as well as transmit power adaptation. The proposed approaches are compared to two state of the art adaptive beaconing protocols that have been designed for generic message dissemination. Our simulation models have been parametrized and validated by means of real-world experiments. We clearly show how taking into account specific requirements can be extremely beneficial even in very crowded freeway scenarios. © 2014 IEEE.

Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) will change the experience of driving in the near future. Most applications will use wireless communication (cellular or ad-hoc) for being able to provide the required services. Usually performance evaluations of communication protocols are conducted with typical network metrics like delay, jitter, or goodput for example. However, in the context of ITS it has been shown that network metrics are not sufficient to evaluate vehicular safety applications. Therefore, we extended our existing simulation framework Veins with a model that allows to simulate dangerous road traffic safety situations, i.e., we implemented a driver behavior model for intersection approaches. Furthermore, we implemented an autonomous controller which tries to avoid crashes at intersections. We showcase the impact of different Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) protocols, although the intersection approach model and autonomous controller could be also employed to carry out safety evaluations of other communication technologies. Next to traditional communication systems like servers or routers at the backbone and personal computers or laptops acting as clients, the Future Internet will additionally comprise many so-called smart objects. Most of everyday devices like coffee machines, fridges, or light switches will participate in this Internet of Things (IoT).Small-sized computers will connect these devices to the network by establishing low power wireless links. To achieve this vision various kinds of wireless multi-hop networks (WMHNs) play an important role. During the last years, it has become clear that test bed-based research is mandatory in order to develop suitable protocol implementations and metrics for these networks. In this article, we review network configurations for wireless networks for the IoT. We describe the DES-Test bed at the Freie Universitat Berlin as an experimental facility to study these network configurations. In addition to the infrastructure and software provided by the test bed, we introduce μkleos as a micro kernel based operating system for embedded devices. We designed μkleos with a special focus on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) to complement our approach to study WMHNs. μkleos provides an implementation of 6LoWPAN to interconnect WSNs to IP-based networks.

This paper analyzes the requirements of mobile health applications concerning real-time criteria and describes the current state of real-time capabilities on constrained devices and low-power networks. Based on this analysis we observe that for these applications real-time capabilities are not only required per system, but also for the entire distributed system. Furthermore, we describe which technologies are available for the network stack, the software platform, and the hardware in order to fulfill these requirements. From the requirements on the network stack, following a top-down approach, we derive hardware prerequisites. We then conduct measurements on typical IoT hardware and operating system. We conclude that it is feasible to fulfill the identified prerequisites. Copyright © 2014 ACM.

Economic globalization leads to complex decentralized company structures calling for the extensive use of distributed IT-systems. The business processes of a company have to reflect these changes of infrastructure. In particular, due to new electronic applications and the inclusion of a higher number of - potentially unknown - persons, the business processes are more vulnerable against malicious attacks than traditional processes. Thus, a business should undergo a security analysis. Here, the vulnerabilities of the business process are recognized, the risks resulting from the vulnerabilities are calculated, and suitable safeguards reducing the vulnerabilities are selected. Unfortunately, a security analysis tends to be complex and affords expensive security expert support. In order to reduce the expense and to enable domain experts with in-depth insight in business processes but with limited knowledge about security to develop secure business processes, we developed the framework MoSSBP facilitating the handling of business process security requirements from their specification to their realization. In particular, MoSSBP provides graphical concepts to specify security requirements, repositories of various mechanisms enforcing the security requirements, and a collection of reference models and case studies enabling the modification of the business processes. In this paper, the MoSSBP-framework is presented. Additionally, we introduce a tool supporting the MoSSBP-related security analysis of business processes and the incorporation of safeguards. This tool is based on object-oriented process models and acts with graph rewrite systems. Finally, we clarify the application of the MoSSBP-framework by means of a business process for tender-handling which is provided by anonymity-preserving safeguards. © Springer science + Business Media, LLC 2006.

Current wireless network simulators provide very detailed and deterministic models of the network protocol layers, whereas rather simple and stochastic models, based on the signal-to-noise ratio, are used for the simulation of the physical layer. Although this approach can be sufficient to study the behavior of different upper layer protocol variations, it prevents an easy alteration of the physical layer because a stochastic abstraction of the physical layer must be provided in advance. In particular, the simulation of distributed systems with physical layers that are designed to have several senders transmitting signals at the same time intentionally, is hardly possible with current approaches. A further problem of stochastic physical layer simulations is the fact that the radio channel's influence must also be carried out stochastically, which limits the advantage of accurate ray-optical channel models. We present a novel approach for the accurate simulation of the physical layer by utilizing existing software-defined radio implementations to create signals, to calculate interference and to decode signals. This technique enables us to simulate wireless networks holistically and, furthermore, we can fully exploit the possibilities of available ray-optical channel models. Copyright © 2015 ICST.

High-coverage testing of sensornet applications is vital for pre-deployment bug cleansing, but has previously been difficult due to the limited set of available tools. We integrate the KleeNet symbolic execution engine with the COOJA network simulator to allow for straight-forward and intuitive high-coverage testing initiated from a simulation environment. A tight coupling of simulation and testing helps detect, narrow down, and fix complex interaction bugs in an early development phase. We demonstrate the seamless transition between COOJA simulation and KleeNet symbolic execution. Our framework enables future research in how highcoverage testing tools could be used in cooperationwith simulation tools. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Vertical handovers (VHO) are expected to be a key feature in Beyond 3G (B3G) networks. This paper presents a Pastry-based P2P overlay network for supporting vertical handover in B3G networks. The P2P overlay is used to quickly locate attachment points (APs) for mobile entities and to rapidly retrieve the configuration and coverage information of these APs. The advantage of the P2P-based solution is its distributed nature, its scalability, and its self-organizing capability. © 2006 IEEE.

The Artificial Hormone System (AHS) is a self organizing system which allocates tasks to processing elements. It works in a distributed way, is able to hold real-time conditions and can run in a mixed-signal chip environment significantly increasing system reliability. Yet the hormone mechanisms offer new ways for malicious attacks which can affect the correct functioning of the AHS. Such attacks may cause severe damage if the AHS is used in an embedded (maybe real-time) environment. Therefore, this paper deals with analyzing malicious attacks on the AHS. We present several ways of attacking the AHS and resulting detection and defense strategies. We also evaluate these strategies in the paper and demonstrate that they can help to protect the AHS from attacks. © 2012 IEEE.
