science gateways have been widely utilized by a large number of user communities to simplify access to complex distributed computing infrastructures. While science gateways are still becoming increasingly popular and the number of user communities is growing, the fast and efficient creation of new science gateways and the flexibility to deploy these gateways on-demand on heterogeneous computational resources, remain a challenge. Additionally, the increase in the number of users, especially with very different backgrounds, requires intuitive embedded e-learning tools that support all stakeholders to find related learning material and to guide the learning process. This paper introduces a novel science gateway framework that addresses these challenges. The framework supports the creation, publication, selection, and deployment of cloud-based reference architectures that can be automatically instantiated and executed even by nontechnical users. The framework also incorporates a knowledge repository exchange and learning module that provides embedded e-learning support. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution, two scientific case studies are presented based on the requirements of the plasmasphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere research communities. © 2022 The Authors. In this paper, we present two extensions of the strand space method to model Kerberos V. First, we include time and timestamps to model security protocols with times-tamps: we relate a key to a crack time and combine it with timestamps in order to define a notion of recency. Therefore, we can check replay attacks in this new framework. Second, we extend the classic strand space theory to model protocol mixture. The main idea is to introduce a new relation → to model the causal relation between one primary protocol session and one of its following secondary protocol session. Accordingly, we also revisit the definition of unsolicited authentication test. To demonstrate the power of this new theory, we model the Kerberos V protocol, and prove its secrecy and authentication goals. Our framework and the proofs of the example have been mechanized using Isabelle/HOL. © 2007 IEEE.

Automakers are trying to make vehicles more intelligent and safe by embedding processors which can be used to implement ldquoby-wirerdquo applications for taking smart decisions on the road or assisting the driver in doing the same. Given this proliferation, there is a need to minimize the computing power required without affecting the performance and safety of the applications. The latter is especially important since these by-wire applications are distributed and real-time in nature and involve deadline bound computations on critical data gathered from the environment. These applications have stringent requirements on the freshness of data items and completion time of the tasks. Our work studies one such safety-related automotive application namely, automatic merge control (AMC) which ensures safe vehicle maneuver in the region where two or more roads *** our contributions, we (i) propose two merge algorithms for amc: head of the lane (HoL) and all feasible sequences (AFS) (ii) demonstrate how DSRC-based wireless communication protocol can be leveraged for the development of AMC (iii) present a real-time approach towards designing AMC by integrating mode-change and real-time repository concepts for reducing the processing power requirements and (iv) provide a scheduling strategy to meet AMC taskspsila timing requirements. Simulations and implementation on robotic vehicular platforms demonstrate the advantages of using our approach for constructing merge-by-wire systems.

In this paper we propose an approach based on self-interested autonomous cameras, which exchange responsibility for tracking objects in a market mechanism, in order to maximise their own utility. A novel ant-colony inspired mechanism is used to grow the vision graph during runtime, which may then be used to optimise communication between cameras. The key benefits of our completely decentralised approach are on the one hand generating the vision graph online which permits the addition and removal cameras to the network during runtime and on the other hand relying only on local information, increasing the robustness of the system. Since our market-based approach does not rely on a priori topology information, the need for any multi-camera calibration can be avoided.

This paper presents how the PerFECt framework is employed to enable innovative teaching and learning mathematics in schools using drama-based approaches. The topic addressed lies in the cross-section between mathematics and computer science: teaching and learning the binary system of arithmetic that constitutes the basis of modern computing. The work builds on previous research efforts targeting gamification of mathematics and is seen under new light offered by the Theatre in Mathematics (TIM) Methodology. The result is an engaging game to teach the binary system to children using their bodies and simple rules for interacting with each other. Following these simple rules the participants enact the operation of a calculator that is able to transform integers into their binary representations and compute the result of the four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The game can be combined with online activities using a simulator of the game, so that learners can explore it for themselves and discover how the arithmetic operations are done, even when they are not in the same physical space with their peers. This way, an effective blended learning approach is ultimately offered combining face-to-face and online activities. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Localization and tracking of small animals in the wild using sensor networks require nodes with ultra-low power consumption, which are particularly challenging to design. Here, we target the tracking of bats in their natural habitat and have to limit the weight of the mote to 2g. To optimize the energy consumption in this scenario, the combination of data communication and ranging is essential. The limitations of the platform and the specific use case ask for a dedicated signal design. We start exploring the use of Binary Offset Carrier (BOC), which is known to be well suited for localization. In this paper, we concentrate on the data communication part of the system. We develop a BOC transceiver in Software Defined Radio (SDR) and perform simulations as well as lab measurements to evaluate its performance and compare it to Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK), which is often used in low-power sensor systems. Most importantly, we conducted realistic field measurements to study the effects of multipath fading and shadowing. Our results clearly show that BOC is perfectly suited for ultra-low power communication in forest environments.

With the ongoing growth of the Internet, a reliable communications infrastructure becomes more and more important. To monitor large networks, asynchronous notifications are needed to inform management systems about critical events. The SNMP framework provides Traps which have been used for monitoring successfully for many years. However, due to shortcomings of SNMP, XML and Web services get more and more attention from the network management community. If the new technologies should replace the existing ones, they must also provide asynchronous notifications. In this paper, we describe notification solutions in traditional as well as in new management frameworks. We present a technique to profile the energy consumption of real Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications. The introduced method is highly integrated into the system and allows the developer of WSN algorithms to analyze the power consumption almost without any additional effort. It can break the power consumption down to any desired level from function-based or thread-based analysis to the evaluation of functional blocks. The required measuring setup relies on a simple circuit using an instrumentation amplifier and a shunt. Energy profiling uses features of the GNU Compiler Collection and benefits from the multi-threading operating system μkleos written in pure C code. Compared to similar approaches in this field the energy profiler does not require any modifications to device drivers or application code. Due to this easily deployable method it is feasible to examine the demand for energy for every single node in the network.

This paper introduces an optimal deployment algorithm of sensors in a given region to provide desired coverage and connectivity for a wireless sensor network. Our paper utilizes two separate procedures for covering different regions of a symmetrical rectangular area. The proposed method divides the given area of interest into two distinct sub-regions termed as the central and edge regions. In each region, a unique scheme is used to determine the number and location of sensors required to monitor and completely cover the region keeping the connectivity and coverage ranges of the sensors, their hardware specification and the dimensions of the region concerned as the constraints. Our scheme reduces the overhead in determining the position of sensors for deployment by following a coverage and connectivity algorithm of lesser complexity rather than those present in related schemes. Finally, we compare our deployment scheme with the interpolation scheme of [2] in regions of different dimensions and different coverage and connectivity levels with different sensing ranges of the sensors to show our cost efficiency over the latter.

Visual sensor networks (VSNs) represent distributed embedded systems with tight constraints on sensing, processing, memory, communications and power consumption. VSNs are expected to scale up in the number of nodes, be required to offer more complex functionality, a higher degree of flexibility and increased autonomy. The engineering of such VSNs capable of (self-)adapting on the application and platform levels poses a formidable challenge. In this paper, we introduce a novel design approach for visual sensor nodes which is founded on computational self-awareness. Computational self-awareness maintains knowledge about the system's state and environment with models and then uses this knowledge to reason about and adapt behaviours. We discuss the concept of computational self-awareness and present our novel design approach that is centred on a reference architecture for individual VSN nodes, but can be naturally extended to networks. We present the VSN node implementation with its platform architecture and resource adaptivity and report on preliminary implementation results of a Zynq-based VSN node prototype.
