Several methods exist for the assignment of trust to the nodes present in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). In this paper we develop a new algorithm for calculation of trust of individual nodes using both Direct and Indirect Trusts and thereby use the calculated trusts for determination of the different route trusts (RTs) to the Base Station. We present a link state routing protocol based on trust which protects the WSN against routing attacks by eliminating the un-trusted nodes beforehand. It then forms the routes and finds the best trustworthy route among them by comparing the values of all the calculated route trusts as for each and every route present in the network. This paper also shows the advantage of inclusion of Indirect Trusts in addition to the Direct Trusts. Finally, we compare our work with the most prevalent routing protocols and show its benefits over them.

Middle ear effusion is a common symptom of otitis media, the reactive physical manifestation of otitis media (OM) in children's middle ear. However, diagnosing MEE for little children at home is troublesome due to their difficulty cooperating and the caregiver's lack of medical knowledge. To this end, we propose EarSonar, a novel acoustic-based MEE diagnostic system. The principle behind EarSonar is that the acoustic absorption effect exists in ear scenarios, and the volume of middle ear fluid can markedly affect the absorbed spectrum energy. By automatically eliminating the impact of potential interference factors and identifying the representative frequency range with the typical reaction of acoustic absorption, EarSonar captures fine-grained signal features on absorbed spectrum energy and models the intrinsic relationship between acoustic absorption and the volume of the filler fluid in the eardrum. On that basis, EarSonar extracts the features of the MEE signal segment and uses k-means clustering to classify middle ear effusion status. We conducted a test on 112 adolescents aged 4–6. We divided the degree of middle ear effusion into three grades. The final average detection accuracy rate exceeds 92%, which is 8 % higher than the previous method. We have implemented a proof-of-concept prototype of EarSonar by building upon earphones embedded with a microphone and speaker. Experimental results demonstrate a feasible and effective way to turn earphones into potential home-use MEE screening tools.

Today many applications routinely generate large quantities of data. The data often takes the form of (time) series, or more generally streams, i.e. an ordered sequence of records. Analysis of this data requires stream processing techniques which differ in significant ways from what current database analysis and query techniques have been optimized for. In this paper we present a new operator, called StreamJoin, that can efficiently be used to solve stream-related problems of various applications, such as universal quantification, pattern recognition and data mining. Contrary to other approaches. StreamJoin processing provides rapid response times, a non-blocking execution as well as economical resource utilization. Adaptability to different application scenarios is realized by means of parameters. In addition, the StreamJoin operator can be efficiently embedded into the database engine, thus implicitly using the optimization and parallelization capabilities for the benefit of the application. The paper focuses on the applicability of StreamJoin to integrate application semantics into the DBMS.

Pipelined MPSoCs provide a high throughput implementation platform for multimedia applications, with reduced design time and improved flexibility. Typically a pipelined MPSoC is balanced at design-time using worst-case parameters. Where there is a widely varying workload, such designs consume exorbitant amount of power. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive pipelined MPSoC architecture that adapts itself to varying workloads. Our architecture consists of Main Processors and Auxiliary Processors with a distributed run-time balancing approach, where each Main Processor, independent of other Main Processors, decides for itself the number of required Auxiliary Processors at run-time depending on its varying workload. The proposed run-time balancing approach is based on off-line statistical information along with workload prediction and run-time monitoring of current and previous workloads' execution times. We exploited the adaptability of our architecture through a case study on an H.264 video encoder supporting HD720p at 30 fps, where clock- and power-gating were used to deactivate idle Auxiliary Processors during low workload periods. The results show that an adaptive pipelined MPSoC provides energy savings of up to 34% and 40% for clock- and power-gating based deactivation of Auxiliary Processors respectively with a minimum throughput of 29 fps when compared to a design-time balanced pipelined MPSoC.

A recent trend in smart camera networks is that they are able to modify the functionality during runtime to better reflect changes in the observed scenes and in the specified monitoring tasks. In this paper we focus on different configuration methods for such networks. A configuration is given by three components: (i) a description of the camera nodes, (ii) a specification of the area of interest by means of observation points and the associated monitoring activities, and (iii) a description of the analysis tasks. We introduce centralized, distributed and proprioceptive configuration methods and compare their properties and performance.

How to exchange information between parties in a mega-scale disaster management system is one of the fundamental challenges to support timely and efficient disaster response and relief. Specifically, the timeliness, scalability, and availability are three desirable features for information exchange. We call the framework to support information exchange with the three features an Open Information Gateway, OIGY in short. In this paper, we present the challenges of information gateway, and the design of the communication protocols and the fundamental components and distributed service recovery algorithms to support the aforementioned features. The algorithm aims at recovering the real-time publish and subscription services without the global information of network topology, available service brokers, and publish/subscription databases. A centralized algorithm is also presented for small scale networks.

Internet services are now the major service platforms to provide services for all sectors of business and industries. To assure the correctness for concurrent data access, transaction-based Internet service is a well-accepted computation model. Because of the proliferation of networked devices and globalization, internet services can barely undertake any service interruption during any time of the day. Service interruption includes scheduled service upgrade, bug fixes, power outage, and service attacks. While considering the QoS (Quality of Service) for the transaction-based Internet service, service continuity is not negligible. However, transaction-base service model does not guarantee service continuity and could lessen the quality of service in many circum-stances. Although several service continuity technologies are developed, many of them focus on providing backup service when failure occurs and do not guarantee that the clients can continue their requested services step when the system is back to service. Existing technologies that support on-line service upgrade are usually too complicated to implement or have tremendous runtime overhead. In this paper, we describe the design, implementation and performance evaluation for service continuity technology to provide seamless online service upgrade for transaction-based Internet services. This approach requires minimal amount of code rewriting and has least overhead, comparing with existing approaches. We present the performance evaluation results and show that the overhead of our design is negligible.

Many modern embedded systems, such as cyber-physical systems, feature close integration of computation and physical components. Configurability, efficiency, adaptability, reliability, and usability are essential features for such systems. A workflow engine is a software application that manages workflows. It helps developers separate control flows from activities of the system, and thus is able to enhance configurability and development efficiency. This work aims at the design and implementation of a workflow engine for cyber-physical systems so as to configure workflows with less efforts. To meet timing requirements, the engine is designed to schedule activities to meet their timing requirements, and provides admission control so that these requirements of a set of workflows are guaranteed as long as it is admitted. A humanoid robot is used as the test-bed for the workflow engine. We model robot applications as workflows, and show that how the workflow engine provides real time guarantee and enhances its configurability.

We investigate an abstraction method, called mean-field method, for the performance evaluation of dynamic networks with pairwise communication between nodes. It allows us to evaluate systems with very large numbers of nodes, that is, systems of a size where traditional performance evaluation methods fall short. While the mean-field analysis is well-established in epidemics and for chemical reaction systems, it is rarely used for communication networks because a mean-field model tends to abstract away the underlying topology. To represent topological information, however, we extend the mean-field analysis with the concept of classes of states. At the abstraction level of classes we define the network topology by means of connectivity between nodes. This enables us to encode physical node positions and model dynamic networks by allowing nodes to change their class membership whenever they make a local state transition. Based on these extensions, we derive and implement algorithms for automating a mean-field based performance evaluation.
