Robust Beamforming for Downlink Multi-Cell systems: A Bilevel Optimization Perspective

Utilization of inter-base station cooperation for information processing has shown great potential in enhancing the overall quality of communication services (QoS) in wireless communication networks. Nevertheless, such cooperations require the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) at base stations (BSs), which is assumed to be perfectly known. However, CSI errors are inevitable in practice which necessitates beamforming techniques that can achieve robust performance in the presence of channel estimation errors. Existing approaches relax the robust beamforming design problems into semidefinite programming (SDP), which can only achieve a solution that is far from being optimal. To this end, this paper views robust beamforming design problems from a bilevel optimization perspective. In particular, we focus on maximizing the worst-case weighted sum-rate (WSR) in the downlink multi-cell multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) system considering bounded CSI errors. We first reformulate this problem into a bilevel optimization problem and then develop an efficient algorithm based on the cutting plane method. A distributed optimization algorithm has also been developed to facilitate the parallel processing in practical settings. Numerical results are provided to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of performance and complexity, particularly in the presence of CSI uncertainties. The number of traffic participants has increased exponentially over the past century, making a traffic accident the most likely cause of death for children and young adults today. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication is regarded as one of the most promising emerging technologies to enhance road safety. It allows traffic participants to exchange relevant information to increase their environmental perception. Cooperative Awareness, a V2X service that is already being deployed in Europe, enables road users to share their dynamic states. Collective Perception (CP), currently in the final stage of standardization in the different regions of the world, enables the exchange of sensor-detected objects. The latter is thus not only relevant for connected vehicles but can further be used by sensor-equipped infrastructure to support vehicular perception, opening a whole new range of possibilities. The objective of this work is to investigate mechanisms to account for the special role of Infrastructure-assisted Collective Perception (ICP). Packet duplication is introduced for ICP to enhance the communication reliability. Additionally, different message generation rules prioritizing ICP are proposed and compared based on the enabled environmental perception. Simulations show significant improvements of the average precision, reaching an average increase of about 60% for ICP in comparison to V2V -based CP in scenarios with low connected vehicle densities.

Link quality estimation has been an active area of research within the wireless sensor network community. It is now well known that the estimation of reliable links requires few sample packets - less than 10, while the estimation of unreliable links require many more - above 50. In scenarios where unreliable links are ubiquitous, and a rapid transfer of data is needed, traditional estimation techniques are not a viable option. In such scenarios, it is instead sufficient to identify the best link available at any given time. Within this context, we propose Link Quality Ranking (LQR), a mechanism that identifies the best link available when only unreliable links are present. Our testbed results indicate that with one sample packet, the delivery rate of LQR - with respect to the best link available - is above 93%. With 10 sample packets, the performance is above 96%.

As embedded and real-time systems became an inherent part of many electronic appliances of everyday use, the demand for their development has grown enormously. Increasing complexity of these systems leads to demands of tools and techniques addressing their efficient and short time-to-market development. One of the possible ways to tackle the problem is a reuse of tools, methodologies and know how already established and successfully adopted in other application domains. Such transfer cannot be done inherently without appropriate modification and methodical adaptation based on an analysis of domain requirements. The paper analyzes necessary modifications and extensions of a general purpose component-based technology to enable development of embedded real-time systems. In addition, we present our own experience obtained while tailoring advanced component framework SOFA 2 to support development of embedded and real-time systems.

Hardware-accelerated Wireless Sensor Network for distributed Structural Health Monitoring

Civil infrastructure objects are subject to safety-related issues such as increasing loads and extended service live. Costly manual inspections of these structures should therefore be supplemented by automated continuous monitoring. In this work, a hardware-accelerated wireless sensor network built entirely with energy-efficient embedded components is proposed as the basis for a distributed structural health monitoring (SHM) implementation. In addition to detection and localization of structural damage, the energy-efficiency of the wireless data acquisition system is the major topic of this work. By utilizing the Random-Decrement (RD) technique, the structure's modal parameters are acquired based on ambient excitation such as wind or traffic. The RD functions are calculated by a Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) designed for mobile applications. To demonstrate the benefits of the proposed monitoring network, the model of a truss bridge is excited by a train set to simulate realistic operational excitations. Dominant mode shapes of the bridge model are extracted from the RD functions using frequency domain Operational Modal Analysis and compared to previously determined reference measurements. The loosening of a single bolted joint simulates damage and is found to be reflected in significant deviations of the first vertical bending mode, located at 68 Hz.

Federated Learning (FL) allows multiple clients to collaboratively train machine learning models without the need to share their local private data. As a result, it can effectively address the issue of data fragmentation. Nevertheless, insufficient evaluation of individual contributions and the lack of protections for both the intellectual property rights (IPR) of models and client privacy can greatly reduce clients' motivations in federated training. To address these challenges, this paper introduces the Traceable Contribution Evaluation and Model Ownership Protection (TraCemop) framework for federated learning, which allows each client to swiftly assess the contributions of others in each round, with integrated support for the traceability of evaluation results. To safeguard the intellectual property of models, a collective watermark is embedded in the global model. Additionally, a secure mechanism for verifying model ownership is also available in case of disputes. Security analysis indicates that TraCemop is capable of resisting data reconstruction attacks as well as various types of model copyright infringements. Finally, we evaluate the proposed framework using two commonly-used datasets, and the experimental results show a significant improvement in the efficiency of contribution evaluation compared to existing methods. Meanwhile, IPR infringement tests on TraCemop reveal that the proposed framework is resilient against malicious efforts to monopolize model ownership. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Pollen allergies are considered as a global epidemic nowadays, as they influence more than a quarter of the worldwide population, with this percentage expected to rapidly increase because of ongoing climate change. To date, alerts on high-risk allergenic pollen exposure have been provided only via forecasting models and conventional monitoring methods that are laborious. The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate our own pollen classification model based on deep neural networks. Airborne allergenic pollen have been monitored in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany, since 2015, using a novel automatic Bio-Aerosol Analyzer (BAA 500, Hund GmbH). The automatic classification system is compared and evaluated against our own, newly developed algorithm. Our model achieves an unweighted average precision of 83.0 % and an unweighted average recall of 77.1 % across 15 classes of pollen taxa. Automatic, real-time information on concentrations of airborne allergenic pollen will significantly contribute to the implementation of timely, personalized management of allergies in the future. It is already clear that new methods and sophisticated models have to be developed so as to successfully switch to novel operational pollen monitoring techniques serving the above need.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. The EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.
