Usually a light beam pushes a particle when the photons act upon it. We investigate the optical forces by nonparaxial gradientless beams and find that the forces can drag suitable particles all the way towards the light source. The major criterion of realizing the backward dragging force is the strong nonparaxiality of the light beam, which contributes to the pulling force owing to momentum conservation. The nonparaxiality of the Bessel beam can be manipulated to possess a dragging force along both the radial longitudinal directions, i.e., a “tractor beam” with stable trajectories is achieved.

The scaffolding of a complete lattice L of finite length was introduced by Rudolf Wille in 1976 as a relative subsemilattice of L that can be constructed using subdirect decomposition. The lattice is uniquely defined by its scaffolding and can be reconstructed from it. Using bonds, we demonstrate how the scaffolding can be constructed from a given formal context and thereby extend the notion of the scaffolding to doubly founded lattices. Further, we explain the creation of a suitable graphical representation of the scaffolding from the context.

The quality of visual vocabularies is crucial for the performance of bag-of-words image classification methods. Several approaches have been developed for codebook construction, the most popular method is to cluster a set of image features (e.g. SIFT) by k-means. In this paper, we propose a two-step procedure which incorporates label information into the clustering process by efficiently generating a large and informative vocabulary using class-wise k-means and reducing its size by agglomerative information bottleneck (AIB). We introduce an extension of the AIB procedure for multi-label problems and show that this two-step approach improves the classification results while reducing computation time compared to the vanilla k-means. We analyse the reasons for the performance gain on the PASCAL VOC 2007 data set.

According to the Internet of Services vision, composite services are created by composing services to complex business processes. The relationships between services in a composition are defined by Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Managing composite SLAs is a complex task which is currently performed manually. In this paper we present an approach for automating the management of composite SLAs by exploiting the explicit knowledge about dependencies between composed services. We define a formal model for representing a set of dependencies. A set of algorithms exploits this information to automate tasks of composite SLA management. These tasks are the validation of SLAs during negotiation, the evaluation of SLA renegotiation requests and the evaluation of SLA violations with regard to their effects on other services. We have validated our approach based on a logistics scenario. We present results with respect to performance and a set of test cases demonstrating the added value of dependency information based automated SLA management.
