People are highly efficient in recognizing faces. However, it is almost impossible for them to cope with huge datasets of facial images without any computational support. On the other hand, the way people describe the facial features using quite commonly encountered descriptors such as “long nose”, “small eyes” and also allude to their feelings according to a specific person like “seems to be nice”, may be utilized to enhance automatic face recognition systems. This offers an interesting possibility to incorporate human perception of faces and relations between facial features into machine-made computations. To address this aspect, one can engage the linguistic descriptors and the linguistic modeling. In this study, we present a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art studies and elaborate on some promising perspectives of the developments in this area.

The Morgantina silver Treasure belonging to the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Aidone (Sicily) were involved in a 3D survey and diagnostics campaign for monitoring over time of the finds, in anticipation of their temporary transfer to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, for a period of four years. According to a multidisciplinary approach, it has been developed a scientific and methodological protocol based on non-invasive techniques to achieve a complete and integrated knowledge of the precious items, of their conservation state and increasing their valorisation. All acquired data, i.e. 3D models, UV fluorescence and X-Ray images and chemical information, will be made available, in a integrated way, within a web oriented platform, that will represent a in progress tool to deepen the existing archaeological knowledge and technologies of production and to obtain referenced information of the state of preservation, before and after moving of the finds from their exposure site. © 2015 Metrology for Archaeology, MetroArchaeo

In this chapter we give a systematic overview over Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in underwater settings and suggest several future applications. Based on a novel classification scheme we illustrate the broad range of available and future implementation options. Whilst we find a variety of previous work on creating and using virtual underwater worlds, quite few examples of real underwater settings exist up to now. Thus, we concentrate on this new category, sketch attractive application areas that go beyond entertainment, and derive requirements for Underwater Mixed Environments (UWME). Combined with a short summary on relevant aspects of underwater optics, we formulate potential topics of future research to overcome current limitations of UWME. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

This paper compares the E-Participation roadmaps of industrial and developing countries, based on Germany and Kenya as representatives. Therefore, the ICT roadmap of each country is de-scribed in a clear shape and with representative E-Participation projects of each country. Based on these projects, the comparison is performed on a categorical level in terms of (1) participation forms, (2) used ICT, and (3) socio-political requirements. After-wards, the results are summarized to determine an overall view on the E-Participation situation in both countries. As a result of the comparison similarities and significant differences will be identified. The results are useful for software developing organizations that want to create ICT governance tools for industrial as well as developing countries and therefore need to consider the characteristics and requirements of both country types. Module checking is a decision problem proposed in late 1990s to formalize verification of open systems, i.e., systems that must adapt their behavior to the input they receive from the environment. It was recently shown that module checking offers a distinctly different perspective from the better-known problem of model checking. So far, specifications in temporal logic CTL have been used for module checking. In this paper, we extend module checking to handle specifications in alternating-time temporal logic (ATL). We define the semantics of ATL module checking, and show that its expressivity strictly extends that of CTL module checking, as well as that of ATL itself. At the same time, we show that ATL module checking enjoys the same computational complexity as CTL module checking. We also investigate a variant of ATL module checking where the environment acts under uncertainty. Finally, we revisit the semantics of ability in the module checking problem, and propose a variant where strategies of agents in the module depend only on what the agents are able to observe.

Role of Entanglement in Quantum Neural Networks (QNN)

Starting with the theoretical basis of quantum computing, entanglement has been explored as one of the key resources required for quantum computation, the functional dependence of the entanglement measures on spin correlation functions has been established and the role of entanglement in implementation of QNN has been emphasized. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the general two-qubit state to be maximally entangled state (MES) have been obtained and a new set of MES constituting a very powerful and reliable eigen basis (different from magic bases) of two-qubit systems has been constructed. In terms of the MES constituting this basis, Bell’s States have been generated and all the qubits of two-qubit system have been obtained. Carrying out the correct computation of XOR function in neural network, it has been shown that QNN requires the proper correlation between the input and output qubits and the presence of appropriate entanglement in the system guarantees this correlation.

This Letter presents a search for new resonances with mass larger than 250 GeV, decaying to a Z boson and a photon. The dataset consists of an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z bosons are identified through their decays either to charged, light, lepton pairs (e⁺e⁻, μ⁺μ⁻) or to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with the expected background in the whole mass range investigated and upper limits are set on the production cross section times decay branching ratio to Zγ of a narrow scalar boson with mass between 250 GeV and 2.75 TeV. © 2016 The Author(s)

Governance can be considered as the way in which companies are directed and controlled. In any governance process, effective experience reuse is an increasingly important asset, representing source of competitive advantage in making decisions. As an example, an adequate level of experience is needed for taking decisions related to resource allocation and, in particular, for team allocation with regard to a specific problem. In this scenario, we propose an experience-based Decision Support System (DSS) supporting Governance processes (i.e. decision-making processes), capable of exploiting previous decisions made by the governance board for solving similar problems. The DSS relies on a semantic formalization of the characteristics of the resources to be allocated and of the problem to be solved. Consequently, when there is a new allocation problem, the DSS can identify the most suitable set of resources to employ. Among them, it is possible to select the best one for the specific problem by exploiting previous experiences of the governance board. The DSS uses pattern-mining techniques in order to discover association rules among different kind of resources, reflecting experiences of the governance board in taking such kind of decisions. © 2015 The Authors

Context. Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia DR2) contains results for 1693 million sources in the magnitude range 3 to 21 based on observations collected by the European Space Agency Gaia satellite during the first 22 months of its operational phase. Aims. We describe the input data, models, and processing used for the astrometric content of Gaia DR2, and the validation of these resultsperformed within the astrometry task. Methods. Some 320 billion centroid positions from the pre-processed astrometric CCD observations were used to estimate the five astrometric parameters (positions, parallaxes, and proper motions) for 1332 million sources, and approximate positions at the reference epoch J2015.5 for an additional 361 million mostly faint sources. These data were calculated in two steps. First, the satellite attitude and the astrometric calibration parameters of the CCDs were obtained in an astrometric global iterative solution for 16 million selected sources, using about 1% of the input data. This primary solution was tied to the extragalactic International Celestial Reference System (ICRS) by means of quasars. The resulting attitude and calibration were then used to calculate the astrometric parameters of all the sources. Special validation solutions were used to characterise the random and systematic errors in parallax and proper motion. Results. For the sources with five-parameter astrometric solutions, the median uncertainty in parallax and position at the reference epoch J2015.5 is about 0.04 mas for bright (G -1, *** optical reference frame defined by Gaia DR2 is aligned with ICRS and is non-rotating with respect to the quasars to within 0.15 mas yr-1. From the quasars and validation solutions we estimate that systematics in the parallaxes depending on position, magnitude, and colour are generally below 0.1 mas, but the parallaxes are on the whole too small by about 0.03 mas. The work at hand presents a method to assess the quality of human sleep within a non-laboratory environment. The monitoring of patients is performed by means of a Kinect device. This results in a non-invasive method which is independent of immediate physical contact to subjects. The results of a study which was carried out as proof of concept are discussed and compared with the polysomnography-based gold standard of sleep analysis. When medical data are concerned, confidentiality is always an issue. This is no less important when monitoring people in their own homes, especially when they are in a situation as vulnerable as sleep. To meet the upcoming challenge of protecting people's privacy while still offering analyses of their data we introduce a blurring method to the acquired data and evaluate the use of our sleep detection test on such de-identified data sets. © Rinton Press.
