The PAMELA space experiment is providing first direct observations of Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) with energies from about 80 MeV to several GeV in near-Earth orbit, bridging the low energy measurements by other spacecrafts and the Ground Level Enhancement (GLE) data by the worldwide network of neutron monitors. Its unique observational capabilities include the possibility of measuring the flux angular distribution and thus investigating possible anisotropies associated to SEP events. The analysis is supported by an accurate back-tracing simulation based on a realistic description of the Earth's magnetosphere, which is exploited to estimate the SEP energy spectra as a function of the asymptotic direction of arrival with respect to the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). In this work we report the results for the May 17, 2012 event.

Multi-terminal VSC-HVDC transmission is a promising solution to transport energy from the generating plants to the distribution stations, and the number and size of the corresponding power grids is expected to increase in the next years. Such a system presents challenging control problems that, so far, have been approached with classical control techniques. However, large scale systems of interconnected nodes fall within the framework of the emerging field of complex networks. This paper analyzes the stability of multi-terminal VSC-HVDC systems from a complex dynamical network perspective, and provides sufficient conditions to ensure bounded synchronization of its trajectories. The obtained results are validated via numerical simulations.

In the practical use of multi-biometric solutions, biometric sources involved in producing the verification or identification decision do occasionally fail to produce results. This work discusses solutions for missing data in multi-biometric score-level fusion. A missing data estimation solution based on support vector regression was presented in this work and compared to four baseline solutions. The evaluation was carried under both the verification and the identification scenarios in an effort to show the effect of missing data estimation on the relatively understudied multi-biometric identification scenario. Evaluation was performed on the Biosecure DS2 score database and satisfying performance was achieved under both biometric scenarios.

Human object extraction from infrared image has broad applications, and has become an active research area in image processing community. Combined with chaos differential evolution (CDE) algorithm and morphological operators, a novel infrared human target extraction method is proposed based on nonextensive fuzzy entropy. Firstly, the image was transformed into a fuzzy domain by fuzzy membership function, and the image nonextensive fuzzy entropy was constructed. Then, the image was segmented by thresholding based on the maximum entropy principle and the pseudoadditivity rule of nonextensive entropy. In order to reduce the search time of optimal threshold selection, the CDE algorithm was presented. Finally, the object was extracted using morphological operators to denoise, fill cavity on the threshold segmented image. Experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient and requires less computation time.

This paper presents a robot manipulator for hand-over-hand guidance training of laparoscopic surgery. Details of the mechanical design, kinematic analysis and control mechanism of the robot are presented. The robot records motion of surgical tool manipulated by master surgeon, and provides physical guidance to the trainee based on the recorded motion. The robotic manipulator can accurately reproduce the five degree of freedom manipulation of laparoscopic instrument during surgery. A hybrid spherical mechanism is applied for decoupling and reproducing the motion of surgical tool to facilitate implementation of control mechanism. The manipulators for left and right hands are capable of precise execution of a recorded trajectory with observed maximum error of 2.12 mm and 2 mm respectively during an experiment on user interaction. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In reverse engineering and computer-aided design (CAD) applications point cloud data is usually manually scanned, reconstructed, and post-processed in separated steps. When point cloud data resulting from a scanning process do not satisfy certain necessary reconstruction requirements, one must perform scanning again to enable proper reconstruction. On-line reconstruction of 3d geometry allows one to generate and update a CAD reconstruction on-line during the scanning process with an hand-held laser scanner. Thus, regions where the scanned data is insufficient for the reconstruction are detected on the fly to allow an immediate correction and improvement of the scanned data. This enables the operator to focus on critical regions in the scanned data to improve the reconstruction quality. We present an on-line segmentation and on-line reconstruction of basic geometric primitives. The presented methods allow for a real-time processing of a point stream. They utilize data structures that can be updated at any time when additional data from the stream has to be processed. This data is used to complete and improve the segmentation and reconstruction during the scanning process.

Can folding a piece of paper flat make it larger? We explore whether a shape S must be scaled to cover a flat-folded copy of itself. We consider both single folds and arbitrary folds (continuous piecewise isometries S ! R2). The underlying problem is motivated by computational origami, and is related to other covering and fixturing problems, such as Lebesgue's universal cover problem and force closure grasps. In addition to considering special shapes (squares, equilateral triangles, polygons and disks), we give upper and lower bounds on scale factors for single folds of convex objects and arbitrary folds of simply connected objects.

We study the cyclic sequences induced at infinity by pairwise-disjoint colored rays with apices on a given balanced bichromatic point set, where the color of a ray is inherited from the color of its apex. We derive a lower bound on the number of color sequences that can be realized from any fixed point set. We also examine sequences that can be realized regardless of the point set and exhibit negative examples as well. In addition, we provide algorithms to decide whether a sequence is realizable from a given point set on a line or in convex position.

By building a wired passive stylus we have added pressure sensitivity to existing capacitive touch screen devices for less than $10 in materials, about 1/10th the cost of existing solutions. The stylus makes use of the built-in audio interface that is available on most smartphones and tablets on the market today. Limitations of the device include the physical constraint of wires, the occupation of one audio input and output channel, and increased latency equal to the period of at least one audio buffer duration. The stylus has been demonstrated in two NIME applications thus far: a visual musical score drawing and a singing synthesis application. © 2013, Steering Committee of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. This paper presents a new approach for the evaluation of User Experience (UX) aspects applied to virtual museums (VM) - VMUXE. A wide percentage of projects and applications for VMs are often "born and buried" in digital labs, without having been experimented and monitored with people. These "prototypes" are the result of experts, technicians, curators, combined together to give birth for multidisciplinary and avant-garde outputs. Earlier attempts to evaluate VM installations failed due to the lack of strategy facing the multidimensional complexity in studying and comparing digital applications in different installations using different devices and metaphors offering different UXs. As a conclusion "communicating" culture through the aid of advanced technology was not a technological issue, but an epistemological one. Setting up a good process of evaluation and analysis is therefore important for establishing next generation virtual museums (NGVM) aiming to reach certain goals such as knowledge exchange, cognitive improvement and heritage communication. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
