In this paper, we use classical Nyquist arguments to derive stability results for large-scale interconnections of "mixed" linear, time-invariant (LTI) systems. We compare our results with P. J. Moylan and D. J. Hill, Stability criteria for large-scale systems, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, vol. 23, no. 2, 1978, pp. 143-149. Our results suggest that, if one relaxes the assumptions on the subsystems in an interconnection from assumptions of passivity or small gain to assumptions of "mixedness," then the Moylan- and Hill-like conditions on the interconnection matrix become more stringent. We also explore the stability of large-scale, time-varying interconnections of strictly positive real systems. We determine a condition that guarantees the existence of a Lyapunov function for the interconnected system.

John Maeda is a past president of Rhode Island School of Design and an internationally known designer. He's now involved in helping entrepreneurs build design into their company cultures. Writer and educator Steven Heller pairs up with Tim Hoover, head of product and design at Canary, to talk about designer CEOs, start‐ups, and cutting out the middleman.
In today's design of embedded systems the software part is increasingly important. Over the last years we have observed a shift from hardware to software added value. With the rise of multi- and many-core platform...

We propose a supervised fingerprint recognition technique in this paper. Our approach performs a minutiae matching process. A minutiae based fingerprint feature extraction is performed first. Then, a supervised classification procedure is applied on the resulted fingerprint feature vectors. We create an appropriate metric for these feature vectors, to be used in the classification process. This special metric represents the main contribution of this work. Other contributions are: the proposed feature vector model, the minimum mean distance based classifier and the threshold based verification approach.

This paper proposes a new decision-level fusion model for fault diagnosis. The new approach consists of four stages. First, decompose raw vibration sample signals into intrinsic mode functions using empirical mode decomposition. Second, select the same number of intrinsic mode functions to extract their fractal feature parameters. Third, individual classifier is used to condition recognition by using the information from different sensor sources. Finally, the new decision-level fusion method proposed in this paper is used to make final decision for fault diagnosis. The proposed approach is evaluated by an experiment of fault diagnosis. Experiment results show that the new decision-level fusion fault diagnosis method can obtain excellent diagnosis performance, and it can get higher accuracy than single classifiers.

This paper presents the findings of a user study investigating conversational patterns across three conditions of table-based interaction (direct touch interactive table, pantograph interactive table and non-digital table) for different types of educational activities. Findings demonstrate that communication style is significantly affected by interaction techniques. The direct touch technique stimulated conversations based around the topic and pedagogical method. The pantograph technique promoted playfulness and had a higher number of directive utterances between participants, with fewer task-based, group-oriented utterances. The non-digital table promoted reflective forms of task-orientated utterance, encouraged group communication and fostered more equitable participation between members. The findings provide insights into the design of interactive tables to support particular forms of social interaction. Copyright 2011 ACM.
