Mobile robots, in general, and service robots in human environments, in particular, need to have versatile abilities to perceive and interact with their environment. Biologically inspired sound source localization is an interesting ability for such a robot. When combined with other sensory input both the sound localization and the general interaction abilities can be improved. In particular, spatial filtering can be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of speech signals emanating from a given direction in order to enhance speech recognition abilities. The emergence of Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) has opened up new avenues for the use of computers in education. ITSs are able to tackle difficult instructional problems and extend the usefulness of the computer as an instructional tool. This paper presents the work done on some aspects of the design and implementation of ITSs. A didactic attempt has been made to design the tutors with dynamic adaptive behavior. A multilevel hierarchical model has been developed for the representation of domain knowledge based on various aptitude levels of students. In order to develop reliable biomechanical models, it is crucial to have a tool available for the identification of the structural arrangement of CFBs in soft tissue. The task of bundle segmentation becomes quite difficult if the bundles touch each other, show a significant fiber crimp and are only partially visible. A strong fiber crimp leads to high-variance local orientations within a bundle that considerably complicate the bundle segmentation. Straightforward segmentation that combines regions of similar local orientations will fail. In this paper, we present a new approach for contour detection in the frame of OCT images of the cornea. With the aim of detecting upper and lower curves that define the cornea in radial slices, we have elaborated a three step specific method. The first step consists in finding epithelium and endothelium points (we call them anchor points). Then the image is preprocessed to enhance the contrast and to reduce speckle. In the final step both anchor points are used as starting points for the algorithm: we trace the contour of the cornea pixel by pixel from these two points with a weight criterion. Taking into account geometrical knowledge of the cornea enhances the robustness of the technique. We validate our approach on a bank of scans including low quality images.

In the life sciences, genomic databases for sequence search have been growing exponentially in size. As a result, faster sequencesearch algorithms to search these databases continue to evolve to cope with algorithmic time complexity. The ubiquitous tool for such search is the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) [1] from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Despite continued algorithmic improvements in BLAST, it cannot keep up with the rate at which the database is exponentially increasing in size. Therefore, parallel implementations such as mpiBLAST have emerged to address this problem. The performance of such implementations depends on a myriad of factors including algorithmic, architectural, and mapping of the algorithm to the architecture. This paper describes modifications and extensions to a parallel and distributed-memory version of BLAST called mpiBLAST-PIO and how it maps to a massively parallel system, specifically IBM Blue Gene/L (BG/L). The extensions include a virtual file manager, a "multiple master" runtime model, efficient fragment distribution, and intelligent load balancing. In this study, we have shown that our optimized mpiBLAST-PIO on BG/L using a query with 28014 sequences and the NR and NT databases scales to 8192 nodes (two cores per node). Embedded active technology, in which thinned active chips are directly buried into a core or high-density-interconnect layers, is gaining more interest for ultra-miniaturization, increased functionality and better performance of SOP (system-on-package). In this study, chip-last embedded active concept is proposed to address some of process and reliability issues that current chip-first and chip-middle embedded active approaches have. The detailed process development for the first prototype of chip-last embedded active is described in this paper.

The demo will show two highly expressive virtual agents introducing the audience to a traditional Japanese room. The agent models and gestures have been created by a professional Japanese character designer. By adapting and extending an influential technique ("Verbs and Adverbs"), we added parameterized emotional expression and gesture interruptibility as new behaviors to increase agent believability, interactivity, and responsiveness. In the demo, users will be provided a simple interface to test the new features.
