Prompt photon production in sNN=2.76-TeV Pb+Pb collisions has been measured by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data collected in 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb−1. Inclusive photon yields, scaled by the mean nuclear thickness function, are presented as a function of collision centrality and transverse momentum in two pseudorapidity intervals, |η|<1.37 and 1.52≤|η|<2.37. The scaled yields in the two pseudorapidity intervals, as well as the ratios of the forward yields to those at midrapidity, are compared to the expectations from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations. The measured cross sections agree well with the predictions for proton-proton collisions within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Both the yields and the ratios are also compared to two other pQCD calculations, one which uses the isospin content appropriate to colliding lead nuclei and another which includes nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distribution functions.

A measurement of event-plane correlations involving two or three event planes of different order is presented as a function of centrality for 7 μb−1 Pb+Pb collision data at sNN=2.76 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Fourteen correlators are measured using a standard event-plane method and a scalar-product method, and the latter method is found to give a systematically larger correlation signal. Several different trends in the centrality dependence of these correlators are observed. These trends are not reproduced by predictions based on the Glauber model, which includes only the correlations from the collision geometry in the initial state. Calculations that include the final-state collective dynamics are able to describe qualitatively, and in some cases also quantitatively, the centrality dependence of the measured correlators. These observations suggest that both the fluctuations in the initial geometry and the nonlinear mixing between different harmonics in the final state are important for creating these correlations in momentum space.

Strange quark matter (SQM) is a hypothetical type of matter composed of almost equal quantities of up, down and strange quarks. In [1], Edward Witten presented the SQM as a denser and more stable matter that could represent the ground state of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Massive SQM particles are called nuclearites. These particles could have been produced in violent astrophysical processes, such as neutron star collisions and could be present in the cosmic radiation. Nuclearites with masses greater than 1013 GeV and velocities of about 250 km/s (typical galactic velocities) could reach the Earth and interact with atoms and molecules of sea water within the sensitive volume of the deep-sea neutrino telescopes. The SQM particles can be detected with the KM3NeT telescope (whose first lines are already installed and taking data in the Mediterranean Sea) through the visible blackbody radiation generated along their path inside or near the instrumented area. In this work the results of a study using Monte Carlo simulations of down-going nuclearites are discussed. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

A search is made for potential ccc¯c¯ tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the “ridge”—i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities—and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at s=13 TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8 pb−1, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v2, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Measurements of the suppression and correlations of dijets is performed using 3µb−1 of Xe+Xe data at sNN=5.44 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Dijets with jets reconstructed using the R=0.4 anti-kt algorithm are measured differentially in jet pT over the range of 32 to 398 GeV and the centrality of the collisions. Significant dijet momentum imbalance is found in the most central Xe+Xe collisions, which decreases in more peripheral collisions. Results from the measurement of per-pair normalized and absolutely normalized dijet pT balance are compared with previous Pb+Pb measurements at sNN=5.02 TeV. The differences between the dijet suppression in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb are further quantified by the ratio of pair nuclear-modification factors. The results are found to be consistent with those measured in Pb+Pb data when compared in classes of the same event activity and when taking into account the difference between the center-of-mass energies of the initial parton scattering process in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions. These results should provide input for a better understanding of the role of energy density, system size, path length, and fluctuations in the parton energy loss.

A search for the single production of a vectorlike top partner (T) with mass greater than 1 TeV decaying into a Z boson and a top quark is presented, using the full Run 2 dataset corresponding to 139 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=13 TeV, collected in 2015–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The targeted final state is characterized by the presence of a pair of electrons or muons with opposite-sign charges which form a Z-boson candidate, as well as by the presence of b-tagged jets and forward jets. Events with exactly two or at least three leptons are categorized into two independently optimized analysis channels. No significant excess above the background expectation is observed and the results from the two channels are statistically combined to set exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the masses and couplings of T. The results are interpreted in several benchmark scenarios to set limits on the mass and universal coupling strength (κ) of the vectorlike quark. For singlet T quarks, κ values between 0.22 and 0.64 are excluded for masses between 1000 and 1975 GeV. For T quarks in the doublet scenario, where the production cross section is much lower, κ values between 0.54 and 0.88 are excluded for masses between 1000 and 1425 GeV.

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=13 TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of quarks and gluons, whose interactions can be described by a local SU(3) gauge symmetry with charges called "color quantum numbers", is reviewed;the goal of this review is to provide advanced Ph.D. students a comprehensive handbook, helpful for their research. When QCD was "discovered" 50 years ago, the idea that quarks could exist, but not be observed, left most physicists unconvinced. Then, with the discovery of charmonium in 1974 and the explanation of its excited states using the Cornell potential, consisting of the sum of a Coulomb-like attraction and a long range linear confining force, the theory was suddenly widely accepted. This paradigm shift is now referred to as the November revolution. It had been anticipated by the observation of scaling in deep inelastic scattering, and was followed by the discovery of gluons in three-jet events. The parameters of QCD include the running coupling constant, αs(Q2), that varies with the energy scale Q2 characterising the interaction, and six quark masses. QCD cannot be solved analytically, at least not yet, and the large value of αs at low momentum transfers limits perturbative calculations to the high-energy region where Q2 ΛQCD2 (250 MeV)2. Lattice QCD (LQCD), numerical calculations on a discretized spacetime lattice, is discussed in detail, the dynamics of the QCD vacuum is visualized, and the expected spectra of mesons and baryons are displayed. Progress in lattice calculations of the structure of nucleons and of quantities related to the phase diagram of dense and hot (or cold) hadronic matter are reviewed. Methods and examples of how to calculate hadronic corrections to weak matrix elements on a lattice are outlined. The wide variety of analytical approximations currently in use, and the accuracy of these approximations, are reviewed. These methods range from the Bethe-Salpeter, Dyson-Schwinger coupled relativistic equations, which are formulated in both Minkowski or Euclidean

Nuclearites are hypothetical, massive particles of Strange Quark Matter (SQM) introduced by E. Witten in 1984. They are composed of approximately equal quantities of up, down, and strange quarks. Due to the third quark flavor component which leads to a total energy lower than in the case of nuclear matter, SQM could represent the ground state of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The detection and characterization of nuclearites could also bring important contributions to the Dark Matter physics. KM3NeT is a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes placed in the Mediterranean Sea, optimized for the search for high-energy cosmic neutrinos (KM3NeT/ARCA) and the study of neutrino properties with atmospheric neutrinos (KM3NeT/ORCA). Nuclearites above a mass threshold of 1013 GeV/c2 having velocities of approximately 250 km/s could reach the ground and interact in the detector through elastic collisions. A fraction of the energy generated in these collisions is dissipated as visible blackbody radiation. A customized Monte Carlo (MC) program was used to simulate the propagation and the signal of nuclearites inside the KM3NeT detector. The background considered for this study is represented by the 40K decay, which is added during the filtering stage of the MC output, and by the simulated atmospheric muons. The analysis uses selection cuts in order to remove the main background of atmospheric muons and to estimate the sensitivity of the detector. Preliminary results on the sensitivity of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope to a flux of massive down-going nuclearites will be presented. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
