KM3NeT is constructing two large volume water Cherenkov detectors in the Mediterranean Sea. By instrumenting the water with photo-multipliers, neutrinos can be detected through the Cherenkov light from charged products of their interactions. The dominating signal, however, comes from muons created in extensive air-showers resulting from cosmic ray interactions in the top of the atmosphere. Despite the water column above, the highest-energy muons (> TeV) reach the detectors. Air-showers develop in a non-isotropic atmosphere where the vertical temperature profile, and thus the density, varies over time. The changing density of the atmosphere affects the balance between interaction and decay (to muons) of mesons in the air-showers. Therefore, the muon flux is expected to correlate with the seasons and short-term temperature fluctuations, as confirmed by other experiments. In this contribution, we present a first measurement of the correlation of the detected muon rate with the effective atmospheric temperature (weighted by muon production spectrum and detector response) for the KM3NeT ORCA telescope. The measured rate is compared with simulations, which model the time-dependent detector efficiency and environmental factors for a constant atmospheric muon flux. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

The KM3NeT collaboration operates two Cherenkov neutrino telescopes in the deep Mediterranean sea, ORCA and ARCA. Both detectors consist of an array of light-sensitive detectors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) assembled along vertical strings anchored to the seafloor. Although the abundant muon flux from cosmic ray air showers is a background for the main scientific objectives of KM3NeT/ORCA and KM3NeT/ARCA, it can be exploited in various ways for calibration purposes. In this contribution, the methods implemented within the KM3NeT calibration workflow which exploit the muon track reconstruction are presented. For the latter, a likelihood fit of a track hypothesis to a set of observed hits on the DOMs is performed. For calibration purposes, the optimal position, time reference and orientation of each string of the detector can be found as the parameters maximizing the overall likelihood of reconstructed muon tracks. The muon track quality method is shown to reach the desired accuracy in time and position, allowing for the determination of the relative time offsets between strings. It also represents an important tool to cross-check position and orientation calibrations obtained by other means. Another muon-based calibration method is used to determine the relative time offsets between DOMs. It is based on the evaluation of the difference between the measured hit time and the one predicted from the fitted muon track’s position. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

The KM3NeT/ORCA detector (Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss) is an array of Digital Optical Modules, spheres that host 31 photomultiplier tubes, tied together in vertical structures, the Detection Units, which are anchored on the seabed. Such an array configuration can detect neutrino events from the Cherenkov radiation emitted by the secondary particles induced by neutrino interactions in the abyssal depths of the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA detector is being deployed at a depth of 2450 m offshore Toulon, France with the determination of the Neutrino Mass Ordering being the main physics goal of the detector. The aim of this work is the study of atmospheric neutrinos with energies at the 1-100 GeV range, in order to obtain information on the atmospheric muon neutrino flux in this energy range, in which only few measurements exist by other experiments. An analysis of data collected with the 6-Detection Unit configuration of KM3NeT/ORCA (KM3NeT/ORCA6) is being presented in this contribution. The data analyzed corresponds to a time period of one and a half year. The procedure for the selection of a high-purity atmospheric neutrino sample, using a Machine Learning classifier (Boosted Decision Tree), is described. Subsequently, an unfolding scheme is used to obtain an estimation of the atmospheric muon neutrino flux in bins of energy in the region of interest. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

The ANTARES detector is an undersea neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The search for pointlike neutrino sources is one of the main goals of the ANTARES telescope, requiring a reliable method to evaluate the detector angular resolution and pointing accuracy. This work describes the study of the Sun “shadow” effect with the ANTARES detector. The shadow is the deficit in the atmospheric muon flux in the direction of the Sun caused by the absorption of the primary cosmic rays. This analysis is based on the data collected between 2008 and 2017 by the ANTARES telescope. The observed statistical significance of the Sun shadow detection is 3.7σ, with an estimated angular resolution of 0.59°±0.10° for downward-going muons. The pointing accuracy is found to be consistent with the expectations and no evidence of systematic pointing shifts is observed.

We present the results of the first combined dark matter search targeting the Galactic Center using the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino telescopes. For dark matter particles with masses from 50 to 1000 GeV, the sensitivities on the self-annihilation cross section set by ANTARES and IceCube are comparable, making this mass range particularly interesting for a joint analysis. Dark matter self-annihilation through the τ+τ−, μ+μ−, bb¯, and W+W− channels is considered for both the Navarro-Frenk-White and Burkert halo profiles. In the combination of 2101.6 days of ANTARES data and 1007 days of IceCube data, no excess over the expected background is observed. Limits on the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation cross section ⟨σAυ⟩ are set. These limits present an improvement of up to a factor of 2 in the studied dark matter mass range with respect to the individual limits published by both collaborations. When considering dark matter particles with a mass of 200 GeV annihilating through the τ+τ− channel, the value obtained for the limit is 7.44×10−24 cm3 s−1 for the Navarro-Frenk-White halo profile. For the purpose of this joint analysis, the model parameters and the likelihood are unified, providing a benchmark for forthcoming dark matter searches performed by neutrino telescopes.

A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the pp→tH/A→ttc‾ and pp→tH/A→ttu‾ processes. Here, H and A represent the extra scalar and pseudoscalar boson, respectively, of the second Higgs doublet in the generalized two-Higgs-doublet model (g2HDM). The search is based on pp collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb⁻¹. Final states with a same-sign lepton pair in association with jets and missing transverse momentum are considered. New Higgs bosons in the 200–1000 GeV mass range and new Yukawa couplings between 0.1 and 1.0 are targeted in the search, for scenarios in which either H or A appear alone, or in which they coexist and interfere. No significant excess above the standard model prediction is observed. Exclusion limits are derived in the context of the g2HDM. © 2024 The Author(s)

Studies of the correlations of the two highest transverse momentum (leading) jets in individual Pb+Pb collision events can provide information about the mechanism of jet quenching by the hot and dense matter created in such collisions. In Pb+Pb and pp collisions at sNN=5.02TeV, measurements of the leading dijet transverse momentum (pT) correlations are presented. Additionally, measurements in Pb+Pb collisions of the dijet pair nuclear modification factors projected along leading and subleading jet pT are made. The measurements are performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC with 260 pb−1 of pp data collected in 2017 and 2.2 nb−1 of Pb+Pb data collected in 2015 and 2018. An unfolding procedure is applied to the two-dimensional leading and subleading jet pT distributions to account for experimental effects in the measurement of both jets. Results are provided for dijets with leading jet pT greater than 100 GeV. Measurements of the dijet-yield-normalized xJ distributions in Pb+Pb collisions show an increased fraction of imbalanced jets compared to pp collisions; these measurements are in agreement with previous measurements of the same quantity at 2.76 TeV in the overlapping kinematic range. Measurements of the absolutely normalized dijet rate in Pb+Pb and pp collisions are also presented, and show that balanced dijets are significantly more suppressed than imbalanced dijets in Pb+Pb collisions. It is observed in the measurements of the pair nuclear modification factors that the subleading jets are significantly suppressed relative to leading jets with pT between 100 and 316 GeV for all centralities in Pb+Pb collisions.

The mass of the Higgs boson is measured in the H→ZZ^⁎→4ℓ decay channel. The analysis uses proton–proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹. The measured value of the Higgs boson mass is 124.99±0.18(stat.)±0.04(syst.) GeV. In final states with muons, this measurement benefits from an improved momentum-scale calibration relative to that adopted in previous publications. The measurement also employs an analytic model that takes into account the invariant-mass resolution of the four-lepton system on a per-event basis and the output of a deep neural network discriminating signal from background events. This measurement is combined with the corresponding measurement using 7 and 8 TeV pp collision data, resulting in a Higgs boson mass of 124.94±0.17(stat.)±0.03(syst.) GeV. © 2023 The Author(s)

A search for flavor-changing neutral-current couplings between a top quark, an up or charm quark, and a Z boson is presented, using proton–proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analyzed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The search targets both single-top-quark events produced as gq→tZ (with q=u, c) and top-quark-pair events, with one top quark decaying through the t→Zq channel. The analysis considers events with three leptons (electrons or muons), a b-tagged jet, possible additional jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data are found to be consistent with the background-only hypothesis and 95% confidence-level limits on the t→Zq branching ratios, assuming only tensor operators of the Standard Model effective field theory framework contribute to the tZq vertices. These are 6.2×10−5 (13×10−5) for t→Zu (t→Zc) for a left-handed tZq coupling, and 6.6×10−5 (12×10−5) in the case of a right-handed coupling. These results are interpreted as 95% CL upper limits on the strength of the corresponding couplings, yielding limits for |CuW(13)*| and |CuB(13)*| (|CuW(31)| and |CuB(31)|) of 0.15 (0.16), and limits for |CuW(23)*| and |CuB(23)*| (|CuW(32)| and |CuB(32)|) of 0.22 (0.21), assuming a new-physics energy scale ΛNP of 1 TeV.

The correlations between flow harmonics vn for n=2, 3, and 4 and mean transverse momentum [pT] in Xe129+Xe129 and Pb208+Pb208 collisions at s=5.44 and 5.02 TeV, respectively, are measured using charged particles with the ATLAS detector. The correlations are potentially sensitive to the shape and size of the initial geometry, nuclear deformation, and initial momentum anisotropy. The effects from nonflow and centrality fluctuations are minimized, respectively, via a subevent cumulant method and an event-activity selection based on particle production at very forward rapidity. The vn−[pT] correlations show strong dependencies on centrality, harmonic number n, pT, and pseudorapidity range. Current models qualitatively describe the overall centrality- and system-dependent trends but fail to quantitatively reproduce all features of the data. In central collisions, where models generally show good agreement, the v2−[pT] correlations are sensitive to the triaxiality of the quadruple deformation. Comparison of the model with the Pb+Pb and Xe+Xe data confirms that the Xe129 nucleus is a highly deformed triaxial ellipsoid that has neither a prolate nor oblate shape. This provides strong evidence for a triaxial deformation of the Xe129 nucleus from high-energy heavy-ion collisions.
