Semi-visible jets, with a significant contribution to the event's missing transverse momentum, can arise in strongly interacting dark sectors. This results in an event topology where one of the jets can be aligned with the direction of the missing transverse momentum. The first search for semi-visible jets produced via a t-channel mediator exchange is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹ and a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector during the Run 2 of the LHC. No excess over Standard Model predictions is observed. Assuming a coupling strength of unity between the mediator, a Standard Model quark and a dark quark, mediator masses up to 2.7 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level. Upper limits on the coupling strength are also derived. © 2023 The Author(s)

Muons created by νµ charged current (CC) interactions in the water surrounding the ANTARES neutrino telescope have been almost exclusively used so far in searches for cosmic neutrino sources. Due to their long range, highly energetic muons inducing Cherenkov radiation in the water are reconstructed with dedicated algorithms that allow the determination of the parent neutrino direction with a median angular resolution of about 0.4◦ for an E−2 neutrino spectrum. In this paper, an algorithm optimised for accurate reconstruction of energy and direction of shower events in the ANTARES detector is presented. Hadronic showers of electrically charged particles are produced by the disintegration of the nucleus both in CC and neutral current (NC) interactions of neutrinos in water. In addition, electromagnetic showers result from the CC interactions of electron neutrinos while the decay of a tau lepton produced in ντ CC interactions will in most cases lead to either a hadronic or an electromagnetic shower. A shower can be approximated as a point source of photons. With the presented method, the shower position is reconstructed with a precision of about 1 m;the neutrino direction is reconstructed with a median angular resolution between 2◦ and 3◦ in the energy range of 1 TeV to 1000 TeV. In this energy interval, the uncertainty on the reconstructed neutrino energy is about 5 % to 10 %. The increase in the detector sensitivity due to the use of additional information from shower events in the searches for a cosmic neutrino flux is also presented. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. A search for cosmic neutrino sources using the data collected with the ANTARES neutrino telescope between early 2007 and the end of 2015 is performed. For the first time, all neutrino interactions –charged and neutral current interactions of all flavors– are considered in a search for point-like sources with the ANTARES detector. In previous analyses, only muon neutrino charged current interactions were used. This is achieved by using a novel reconstruction algorithm for shower-like events in addition to the standard muon track reconstruction. The shower channel contributes about 23% of all signal events for an E−2 energy spectrum. No significant excess over background is found. The most signal-like cluster of events is located at (α, δ) = (343.8◦, 23.5◦) with a significance of 1.9σ. The neutrino flux sensitivity of the search is about E2dΦ/dE = 6 × 10−9 GeV cm−2 s−1 for declinations from −90◦ up to −42◦, and below 10−8 GeV cm−2 s−1 for declinations up to 5◦. The directions of 106 source candidates and of 13 muon track events from the IceCube HESE sample are investigated for a possible neutrino signal and upper limits on the signal flux are determined. Context. We present the early installment of the third Gaia data release, Gaia EDR3, consisting of astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, complemented with the list of radial velocities from Gaia DR2. Aims. A summary of the contents of Gaia EDR3 is presented, accompanied by a discussion on the differences with respect to Gaia DR2 and an overview of the main limitations which are present in the survey. Recommendations are made on the responsible use of Gaia EDR3 results. Methods. The raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission have been processed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) and turned into this early third data release, which represents a major advance with respect to Gaia DR2 in terms of astrometric and photometric precision, accuracy, and homogeneity. Results. Gaia EDR3 contains celestial positions and the apparent brightness in G for approximately 1.8 billion sources. For 1.5 billion of those sources, parallaxes, proper motions, and the (GBP − GRP) colour are also available. The passbands for G, GBP, and GRP are provided as part of the release. For ease of use, the 7 million radial velocities from Gaia DR2 are included in this release, after the removal of a small number of spurious values. New radial velocities will appear as part of Gaia DR3. Finally, Gaia EDR3 represents an updated materialisation of the celestial reference frame (CRF) in the optical, the Gaia-CRF3, which is based solely on extragalactic sources. The creation of the source list for Gaia EDR3 includes enhancements that make it more robust with respect to high proper motion stars, and the disturbing effects of spurious and partially resolved sources. The source list is largely the same as that for Gaia DR2, but it does feature new sources and there are some notable changes. The source list will not change for Gaia DR3. Conclusions. The principles of a search for high energy neutrino emission in coincidence with very high energy (VHE;0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray flares from two bright extragalactic sources, based on the data collected in 2012-2016 by the ANTARES neutrino detector and High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory, are presented. The ANTARES telescope observes with high duty cycle an instantaneous field of view of 2π. To study variable sources like blazars, it is crucial to achieve unbiased monitoring and an instrument like HAWC is capable of long term and continuous monitoring of the source with nearly 100% duty cycle. Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) are the brightest and the closest BL Lac objects known. In contrast to other types of active galactic nuclei (AGN), BL Lacs are characterized by rapid and large-amplitude flux variability. Such radio-loud AGNs with collimated jets aligned to the line of sight, are candidate sources of the observed high energy cosmic rays and of accompanying neutrinos and gamma rays produced in hadronic interactions with the surrounding medium. The measurement of the flux of muons produced in cosmic ray air showers is essential for the study of primary cosmic rays. Such measurements are important in extensive air shower detectors to assess the energy spectrum and the chemical composition of the cosmic ray flux, complementary to the information provided by fluorescence detectors. Detailed simulations of the cosmic ray air showers are carried out, using codes such as CORSIKA, to estimate the muon flux at sea level. These simulations are based on the choice of hadronic interaction models, for which improvements have been implemented in the post-LHC era. In this work, a deficit in simulations that use state-of-the-art QCD models with respect to the measurement deep underwater with the KM3NeT neutrino detectors is reported. The KM3NeT/ARCA and KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescopes are sensitive to TeV muons originating mostly from primary cosmic rays with energies around 10 TeV. The predictions of state-of-the-art QCD models show that the deficit with respect to the data is constant in zenith angle;no dependency on the water overburden is observed. The observed deficit at a depth of several kilometres is compatible with the deficit seen in the comparison of the simulations and measurements at sea level. © 2024, CC BY.

Neutrino telescopes have been proposed as efficient tools for indirect dark matter searches, especially using the Sun as source for its good capability to capture dark matter and since we do not expect high-energy neutrinos from it. However, the last statement should be taken with caution because high-energy neutrinos may come from cosmic particle interactions in the atmosphere of the Sun and producing neutrinos. In this work, we describe an analysis of the ANTARES neutrino telescope optimised for the observation of neutrinos coming from the atmosphere of the Sun due to cosmic particles interactions. Focusing in the 10 GeV - 10 TeV energy range and using 2007-2012 data, the sensitivity obtained for the flux is approximately 1012 km-2 y-1, whereas the expected flux is two order of magnitudes below. From this, we can conclude that present high-energy neutrino telescopes dark matter searches in the Sun can indeed neglect this contribution, but could play a role in future detectors with better neutrino flux sensitivities in the 10 GeV - 10 TeV energy range and very good angular resolution. Advanced LIGO detected a significant gravitational wave signal (GW170104) originating from the coalescence of two black holes during the second observation run on January 4th, 2017. An all-sky high-energy neutrino follow-up search has been made using data from the Antares neutrino telescope, including both upgoing and downgoing events in two separate analyses. No neutrino candidates were found within ±500 s around the GW event time nor any time clustering of events over an extended time window of ±3 months. The non-detection is used to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission from GW170104 to less than ∼ 4 × 1054 erg for a E−2 spectrum. Copyright © 2017, The Authors.
