An effective, accessible abstraction hierarchy has made using and programming computers possible for people across all disciplines. Establishing such a hierarchy for quantum programming is an outstanding challenge, especially due to a proliferation of different conventions and the rapid pace of innovation. One critical portion of the hierarchy is the abstract machine, the layer that separates a programmer’s mental model of the hardware from its physical realization. Drawing on historical parallels in classical computing, we explain why having the "right" quantum abstract machine (QAM) is essential for making progress in the field and propose a novel framework for evaluating QAMs based on a set of desirable criteria. These criteria capture aspects of a QAM such as universality, compactness, expressiveness, and composability, which aid in the representation of quantum programs. By defining this framework we take steps toward defining an optimal QAM. We further apply our framework to survey the landscape of existing proposals, draw comparisons, and assess them based on our criteria. While these proposals share many common strengths, we find that each falls short of our ideal. Our framework and our findings set a direction for subsequent efforts to define a future QAM that is both straightforward to map to a variety of quantum computers, and provides a stable abstraction for quantum software development. In this study, we examined the late-time cosmic expansion of the universe within the framework of f(Q, Lm) gravity, where Q denotes the non-metricity and Lm represents the matter Lagrangian. We analyzed a linear f(Q, Lm) model of the form f(Q, Lm) = −αQ + 2Lm + β. Using MCMC methods, we constrained the model parameters H0, α, and β with various datasets, including H(z), Pantheon+SH0ES, and BAO data. For the H(z) dataset, we found H0 = 67.90 ± 0.66, α = 0.1072+0.0054−0.0069, and β = −1988.2 ± 1.0. For the Pantheon+SH0ES dataset, H0 = 70.05 ± 0.68, α = 0.0916+0.0028−0.0033, and β = −1988.3 ±1.0. For the BAO dataset, H0 = 68.1 ±1.0, α = 0.1029+0.0041−0.0052, and β = −1988.24 ±0.99. Moreover, the energy density remains positive and approaches zero in the distant future, and the deceleration parameter indicates a transition from deceleration to acceleration, with transition redshifts of zt = 0.60, zt = 0.78, and zt = 0.66 for the respective datasets. These findings align with previous observational studies and contribute to our understanding of the universe’s expansion dynamics. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Launched in 2013, LivDet-Iris is an international competition series open to academia and industry with the aim to assess and report advances in iris Presentation Attack Detection (PAD). This paper presents results from the fourth competition of the series: LivDet-Iris 2020. This year’s competition introduced several novel elements: (a) incorporated new types of attacks (samples displayed on a screen, cadaver eyes and prosthetic eyes), (b) initiated LivDet-Iris as an on-going effort, with a testing protocol available now to everyone via the Biometrics Evaluation and Testing (BEAT)* open-source platform to facilitate reproducibility and benchmarking of new algorithms continuously, and (c) performance comparison of the submitted entries with three baseline methods (offered by the University of Notre Dame and Michigan State University), and three open-source iris PAD methods available in the public domain. The best performing entry to the competition reported a weighted average APCER of 59.10% and a BPCER of 0.46% over all five attack types. This paper serves as the latest evaluation of iris PAD on a large spectrum of presentation attack instruments. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Quality is nowadays a ubiquitous component in manufacture and many other activities. We present a computation related to Acceptance Sampling, which, together with Statistical Process Control, makes the fundamentals of statistical Quality Control. We provide a webpage where a user’s typical sample from a process can be inserted, leading to “accept” or “reject” vs. given specifications. We have several goals: to offer, on a webpage, the statistical procedure computation, which is otherwise complex; to combine, on a Linux platform, programming languages, PHP and Python, and a graphical utility, gnuplot; and to stress the suggestion of the Web as a computing medium. The webpage is freely accessible to a user just by means of a browser, i.e., installing no software, thus needing no special power or matching operating system, this being an example adaptable to many other problems. The study also draws attention both to the use of the Web for scientific computing, and to the convenience of this use in scientific publications. Web-based computing in general is advocated, this route using the same executable programs as classical computing, which is the core technical difficulty. In our technological era, this still insufficiently explored approach is here made accessible, inviting the sharing between academia and industry.

Application of a kernel method with stably evaluated Gaussian kernel to problems on irregular domains

The paper extends recently developed idea of stable evaluation of the Gaussian kernel. Owing to this, the Gaussian radial basis function that is sensitive to the shape parameter can be stably evaluated and applied to interpolation problems as well as to solve differential equations, giving highly accurate results. But it can be done only with grids being the Cartesian product of sets of points, what limits the use of this idea to rectangular domains. In the present paper, by the association of an appropriate transformation with the mentioned method, the latter is applied to solve differential equations on quadrilateral irregular domains. As an example a biharmonic problem is taken into consideration. The numerical tests show high accuracy and usefulness of the method..

Time-series data is widely studied in various scenarios, like weather forecast, stock market, customer behavior analysis. To comprehensively learn about the dynamic environments, it is necessary to comprehend features from multiple data sources. This paper proposes a novel visual analysis approach for detecting and analyzing concept drifts from multi-sourced time-series. We propose a visual detection scheme for discovering concept drifts from multiple sourced time-series based on prediction models. We design a drift level index to depict the dynamics, and a consistency judgment model to justify whether the concept drifts from various sources are consistent. Our integrated visual interface, ConceptExplorer, facilitates visual exploration, extraction, understanding, and comparison of concepts and concept drifts from multi-source time-series data. We conduct three case studies and expert interviews to verify the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract: Investigation of the 7H-system in the experiment conducted at the fragment separator ACCULINNA-2 in the 8He(2H,3He)7H reaction requires to detect the recoil 3He ions with energy down to 6 MeV. For this purpose two ∆ E-E particle telescopes are used, with each telescope having in front a thin (20-μm) Si strip detector (∆E-SSD). The maps of thickness heterogeneity of the thin detectors were determined by measuring the energy losses of the 226Ra α-particles. The adopted thickness normalization method provides a good identification of the 3He nuclei being recorded in the presence of a high 4He background. Two approaches were used for calculating the energy losses of the identified 3He and 4He reaction ejectiles and reconstructing their energy values available at the exit from the deuterium target. The developed techniques were applied for the 7H missing-mass reconstruction. © 2020, Allerton Press, Inc.

Effects of anisotropic pressure on interacting quark star structure

Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) corrections and color superconductivity predict that strongly interacting matter can reveal new physical phenomena under extreme conditions. Taking into account these interaction effects, we investigate the role of anisotropic pressure in quark stars composed of interacting quark matter. Adopting two physically well-motivated anisotropy profiles, we numerically solve the stellar structure equations in order to explore the consequences of anisotropic pressure on various macroscopic properties such as radius, gravitational mass, surface redshift, moment of inertia, tidal Love number and oscillation spectrum. Remarkably, for both anisotropy models, negative anisotropies increase the radial stability of interacting quark stars, while the opposite occurs for positive anisotropies. However, for the Bowers-Liang profile, the central density corresponding to the maximum-mass point does not coincide with the central density where the squared oscillation frequency vanishes, indicating that the existence of stable anisotropic interacting quark stars is possible beyond the maximum mass for negative anisotropies. Additionally, we compare our theoretical predictions with several observational mass-radius measurements and tidal deformability constraints, which suggest that both strong interaction effects and anisotropy effects play a crucial role in describing compact stars observed in the Universe. Sketch-based 3D scene retrieval is to retrieve 3D scene models given a user's hand-drawn 2D scene sketch. It is a brand new but also very challenging research topic in the field of 3D object retrieval due to the semantic gap in their representations: 3D scene models or views differ from non-realistic 2D scene sketches. To boost this interesting research, we organized a 2D Scene Sketch-Based 3D Scene Retrieval track in SHREC'18, resulting a SceneSBR18 benchmark which contains 10 scene classes. In order to make it more comprehensive, we have extended the number of the scene categories from the initial 10 classes in the SceneSBR2018 benchmark to 30 classes, resulting in a new and more challenging benchmark SceneSBR2019 which has 750 2D scene sketches and 3,000 3D scene models. Therefore, the objective of this track is to further evaluate the performance and scalability of different 2D scene sketch-based 3D scene model retrieval algorithms using this extended and more comprehensive new benchmark. In this track, two groups from USA and Vietnam have successfully submitted 4 runs. Based on 7 commonly used retrieval metrics, we evaluate their retrieval performance. We have also conducted a comprehensive analysis and discussion of these methods and proposed several future research directions to deal with this challenging research topic. Deep learning techniques have been proved their great potentials again in dealing with this challenging retrieval task, in terms of both retrieval accuracy and scalability to a larger dataset. We hope this publicly available benchmark, together with its evaluation results and source code, will further enrich and promote 2D scene sketch-based 3D scene retrieval research area and its corresponding applications. © 2019 The Author(s)

A heuristic rule-based approach was proposed in a recent paper for the detection of the urban road environment-type (RET), such as downtown, residential area, and business/industrial area, that characterizes the road environment around an ego-car. The RET detection approach takes into account the relevant traffic signs (TSs) that are visible from the ego-car. It is assumed that the TS data, namely the type and the location of each detected TS along the route, is made available for the purpose by an on-board TS recognition system. The continually updated TS data is aggregated and evaluated in a multi-scale manner by the RET detection system. In the present paper, the heuristic rules - employed within the mentioned system - that handle the competition situations arising between the RET-candidates selected for and representing the various distance-scales are visualized in a vividly descriptive manner. The visualization of the rules makes the decision process easier to understand, furthermore, it facilitates the re-use, the adaptation and the extension of the rule-set for other road-related applications that rely on TS and possibly on other road-related data. A summary of the RET detection results from the mentioned paper is included herein to make the paper self-contained.
