Hierarchical structures are abundant in nature, such as in the superhydrophobic surfaces of lotus leaves and the structural coloration of butterfly wings. They consist of ordered features across multiple size scales, and their unique properties have attracted enormous interest in wide-ranging fields, including energy storage, nanofluidics, and nanophotonics. Femtosecond lasers, capable of inducing various material modifications, have shown promise for manufacturing tailored hierarchical structures. However, existing methods such as multiphoton lithography and 3D printing using nanoparticle-filled inks typically involve polymers and suffer from high process complexity. Here, we demonstrate 3D printing of hierarchical structures in inorganic silicon-rich glass featuring self-forming nanogratings. This approach takes advantage of our finding that femtosecond laser pulses can induce simultaneous multiphoton crosslinking and self-formation of nanogratings in hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ). The 3D printing process combines the 3D patterning capability of multiphoton lithography and the efficient generation of periodic structures by the self-formation of nanogratings. We 3D-printed micro-supercapacitors with large surface areas and a remarkable areal capacitance of 1 mF/cm2 at an ultrahigh scan rate of 50 V/s, thereby demonstrating the utility of our 3D printing approach for device applications in emerging fields such as energy storage. Investigations of kinematic and dynamic models of tractor-trailer systems have historically been performed for stability analysis or state estimation. In this work, we present and evaluate kinematic and dynamic tractor-trailer models for model predictive control (MPC). We show in open-loop simulations that a kinematic and a dynamic model are equivalent at low speeds and short discretization time steps. A zero speed singularity and stiff dynamics prevents the usage of the dynamic model in control design, where discretization time steps are longer. A method of discretization is proposed to resolve the low speed feasibility of the dynamic model. In closed-loop simulations, the real-time applicability of the kinematic and dynamic models in a nonlinear MPC is verified.

Ensuring that equipment is reliable and secure is becoming more important as industrial processes rely more and more on devices linked to the cloud. It provides a new method for predicting when cloud-connected industrial equipment may break down. Fixing issues with data integrity and interpretability, the suggested method seeks to make the prediction model more secure while simultaneously making it more transparent. The Decision Trees (DT) method shows strong predicting skills using a dataset of occurrences of equipment breakdowns and performance histories. An integrated security layer that encrypts sensitive data further protects the prediction process. Utilizing visualization techniques that reveal the model’s decision-making process helps to achieve transparency. Shown experimentally is the efficacy of the method in anticipating equipment breakdowns within a safe and transparent framework. By providing a dependable and interpretable solution for proactive measures against equipment failures, this study adds to the progress of predictive maintenance techniques in cloud-connected manufacturing.

This paper describes the development of a self-driving e-scooter with the ability to safely travel without a rider along a pre-planned route using automated onboard control. Ride-share electric scooters are an alternative to walking or driving, but they are often ineffective or a nuisance due to their placement after usage. An autonomous driving framework specific to an e-scooter, including path planning and state estimation, enables short-distance repositioning and parking. This paper describes the framework’s hardware and software components along with design choices and pitfalls. We also present results of real-world autonomous navigation, including the effectiveness of our localization methods. © 2024 IEEE.

This study proposes a laboratory intelligent facial recognition system based on improved CNN, which significantly improves the accuracy of facial recognition by optimising the portrait recognition algorithm, improving CNN calculation and large parameter scale, and utilising perspective projection to improve portrait effect and sample utilisation. The experimental results show that the recognition rate has been improved by 10%, the CPU usage rate is less than 100%, and the model parameters have been reduced by more than 95%. This system can effectively and accurately recognise faces, making it suitable for embedded facial recognition devices. Copyright © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

This paper describes our design of multihop multiRAT routing protocol based on the traditional DYMO (Dynamic MANET On Demand) routing protocol. Since the tradition routing protocols including DYMO only support singleRAT communications. With the increasing demand of multiRAT communications, there is a need for a multihop multiRAT routing protocol. Among the well-accepted routing protocols, DYMO is one of the popular routing protocols, which is also a successor of the widely-used AODV (Ad-Hoc on Demand Distance Vector). To support multiRAT, a route discovery process in DYMO is enhanced. A route request message RREQ will be broadcasted from the source to its neighbors through multiRAT instead of singleRAT as done traditionally. Then, the intermediate hosts also perform the same procedure by broadcasting the received RREQ to the next hop via all RATs they have in hands. The process continues until reaching the destination. The destination then sends a route reply message RREP back to the source through the reverse order of the intermediate hosts and the specified RATs. Therefore, a routing table stored on each host has be enhanced to include the information regarding the RAT used for each route entry, so that the RREP can be successfully sent through the right RATs along the discovered route back to the source. With the performance evaluation based on the simulation in OMNET++, the result shows that the proposed enhanced multiRAT DYMO achieves high QoS in terms of reception rate and end-to-end delay, and successfully create routes in multiRAT environment with the mix use of different RATs in each data route.

Picocells can enhance the capacity and spectral efficiency of heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs) and reduce user equipment (UE) power consumption. Also, the wireless backhaul technology has emerged as an efficient way to boost the data rate in dense 5G HWNs. However, due to the dynamic and distributed nature of 5G HWNs, pico edge users (PEUs) cannot resist the eavesdropping attempts. Moreover, the PEUs are located far away from the PBS and receive considerably low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) values. Thus, it is critical to improve the achievable secrecy rate (SR) of PEUs for reliable and secure transmission of confidential data in the existence of eavesdroppers. Aiming to enhance the SR of PEUs, this paper formulates a joint optimization problem of beamforming and power allocation of millimeter-wave (mmWave)enabled pico base station (PBS) having backhaul wireless links with macro base station (MBS). As the system is diverse and complex, addressing this non-convex optimization problem directly is challenging. Thus, we have used the Markov decision process (MDP) to transform this optimization problem into a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) problem. Then, to determine the optimal policy for MARL problem of beamforming and power allocation, we propose a Quantum reinforcement learning (QRL) approach. It uses quantum parallelism and state superposition principles to maximize the SR of PEUs. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme achieves 28.12% and 7.9% better secrecy rate than MAQL and MADQL schemes, respectively.

The quality of the cornea endothelial microscopy image is critical for clinical analysis. Although the noncontact specular microscope is more user-friendly than the contact confocal microscope, the imaging quality of the specular microscope is lower. The modality transfer is a promising solution for image quality enhancement. This paper proposes a Structure Consistent Generative Adversarial Network (SC-GAN) to transfer the imaging style from the specular microscope to the confocal microscope. Specifically, we use the Fourier frequency domain consistency to preserve cell structure and propose a multi-scale perception discriminator to improve model robustness under cell size variation. Experiment results prove the effectiveness of our method.

In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man's capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11th to 13th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations. © 2024 IEEE.
