Enhancing Skin Disease Diagnosis: Light GBM-DMS Algorithm for Accurate Image Classification

Globally, skin diseases are emerging as the most common health problem. It initiates depressive disorder, and it also causes physical health distress. It rarely led to skin cancer in extreme cases. Diagnosing skin disease is subjective and time-consuming when it is performed by health experts manually. Hence, automatic skin disease prediction is required by both dermatologists and patients to enhance and accelerate treatment plans. Even though many machine-learning techniques are available to detect skin diseases, the timely prediction and accurate classification of skin lesions are still in demand. Hence, the Discrete Mycorrhizal Search Algorithm is used to optimize the novel LightGBM to meet this objective. Firstly, intrusions like noise elimination and hair removal are performed and then the image resizing takes place by utilizing the preprocessing pipelines. Subsequent to data pre-processing, the prime features are extracted using the convolutional self-attention based L2 regularization, thus minimizing the data complexity. At last, the extracted features are shifted to the final categorization phase which is done by the novel approach for effective classification of skin diseases. Two skin disease classification images, including datasets, the Skin Lesions Dermatoscopic Image dataset and Skin Cancer MNIST HAM10000, are selected to validate the classification performance. Comprehensive analyses are performed with significant measures that showed the proposed model attained better performances of 98.6%, 0.95, and 10.43 s from accuracy, intersection of union, and execution time, respectively. The stability and robustness under different environmental conditions for clinical applications in skin disease detection and classification tasks are analyzed for making decisions in real-time scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Machine Learning Research often involves the use of diverse libraries, modules, and pseudocodes for data processing, cleaning, filtering, pattern recognition, and computer intelligence. Quantization of Effort Required for the above cumulative processes is rarely discussed in the existing works and The time to reach the desired level of the model's functionality is essential to gauge the environment training for the model training and pre-deployment testing. In this study, we empirically defined the manual-cum-computational effort required for the model development in terms of 2-time factors: time-to-live (time until 1st code modification) and time-for-modification (time between 2 codebase changes) taken together in a mathematical model to compute Effort Factor(quantitative measure of determining effort needed to design ML algorithms). The study is novel in terms of how the effort required to create ML models is calculated with a particular focus on the manual effort direction. The results and the findings obtained can be used for determining the total time needed to synthesize ML models and frameworks in terms of code change cycles and implementation strategies marking a 25% performance increase in the current method above the Standard Pipeline. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Deep transfer learning technique to detect white blood cell classification in regular clinical practice using histopathological images

Leukemia, a malignant disease characterized by the rapid proliferation of specific types of white blood cells (WBC), has prompted increased interest in leveraging automatic WBC classification system. This study presents the design of a robust WBC classification system, integrating deep learning with microscopic image analysis. The proposed classification model is designed to categorize blood cells into four distinct groups: eosinophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and neutrophil. The study employs a Kaggle image dataset for comprehensive learning. The dataset comprises 12,500 microscopic images used to categorize the four blood cell groups. To enhance performance and reduce the likelihood of overfitting, transfer learning techniques are employed. Six deep transfer learning models namely VGG16, ResNet50, AlexNet, MobileNet, GoogLeNet, and EfficientNetBO are used for feature extraction and classification. The results of the experiments show that VGG16 and MobileNet demonstrated enhancements compared to other pre-trained models when evaluated on both augmented and original datasets. A diverse set of evaluation criteria was employed to thoroughly assess the effectiveness of medical image classification. Notably, the VGG16 and MobileNet models accurately predicted Lymphocytes and Monocytes with a 100% accuracy rate, and Eosinophil and Neutrophil with rates of 99.35% and 99.81%, respectively. This research work empower medical practitioners, particularly in the field of pathology and hematology by providing advanced tools for accurate blood cell classification. The proposed VGG16 and MobileNet models hold promise for simplifying WBC classification, improving decision-making processes, and ultimately advancing patient care in the medical domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The pandemic creates a more complicated providence of medical assistance and diagnosis procedures. In the world, Covid-19, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS Cov-2), and plague are widely known pandemic disease desperations. Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic tragedies, various medical diagnosis models and intelligent computing solutions are proposed for medical applications. In this era of computer-based medical environment, conventional clinical solutions are surpassed by many Machine Learning and Deep Learning-based COVID-19 diagnosis models. Anyhow, many existing models are developing lab-based diagnosis environments. Notably, the Gated Recurrent Unit-based Respiratory Data Analysis (GRU-RE), Intelligent Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based Covid Data Analysis (Thermal Images) (I-UVAC), and Convolutional Neural Network-based computer Tomography Image Analysis (CNN-CT) are enriched with lightweight image data analysis techniques for obtaining mass pandemic data at real-time conditions. However, the existing models directly deal with bulk images (thermal data and respiratory data) to diagnose the symptoms of COVID-19. Against these works, the proposed spectacle thermal image data analysis model creates an easy and effective way of disease diagnosis deployment strategies. Particularly, the mass detection of disease symptoms needs a more lightweight equipment setup. In this proposed model, each patient's thermal data is collected via the spectacles of medical staff, and the data are analyzed with the help of a complex set of capsule network functions. Comparatively, the conventional capsule network functions are enriched in this proposed model using adequate sampling and data reduction solutions. In this way, the proposed model works effectively for mass thermal data diagnosis applications. Advances in machine learning and computer vision have significantly improved the diagnostic capabilities of medical imaging. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have emerged as a crucial tool for image classification, particularly in detecting pneumonia from chest X-ray images. Despite their high accuracy, CNNs face challenges in clinical adoption due to their lack of interpretability. Medical practitioners require a clear understanding of the decision-making process to trust AI-generated diagnoses. To address the aforementioned challenge, we propose pneumonia classification model incorporating CNN with a combination of the model and Grad-CAM, for enhanced interpretability. Grad-CAM visually outlines critical regions, influencing the prediction, so the clinician can easily confirm AI-based diagnoses with a more confident and credible approach. It is exclusively for pediatric pneumonia, an accurate and explainable machine for early interventions that can also work in resource-scarce regions. Our research uses a set of 5,863 pediatric chest X-ray images, divided into Pneumonia and Normal classes. The dataset was acquired from Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center and divided into three subsets: training, validation, and test. By improving the accuracy and transparency of the diagnosis, this model can help bridge the gap between AI and the real world. This can help facilitate quicker and more reliable pneumonia diagnostics. © 2025 IEEE.

SLwF: A Split Learning Without Forgetting Framework for Internet of Things

Split learning (SL) is widely regarded as a promising distributed machine learning framework with superior privacy-preserving properties, lower communication and computation costs. However, in real Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, existing SL may not perform well because the local data of IoT devices often do not follow the same distribution. This leads to the model continuously adapting to the current data distribution in each training epoch, resulting in a catastrophic forgetting phenomenon. Existing methods typically attempt to add raw or generated data from previous devices in the current training epoch to review knowledge, but direct access to the local data of other devices carries serious privacy risks. Data augmentation techniques based on generative networks often have poor robustness and increase the computation cost on the device side. To address these challenges, we propose a new SL framework called SL without Forgetting (SLwF). To mitigate catastrophic forgetting without accessing any previous data, we propose a contrastive learning-based training method that leverages current training data to review previous knowledge, and learn new knowledge better. Furthermore, we adopt an exponential moving average (EMA)-based model update strategy to preserve lost knowledge, further alleviating the forgetting problem. We implement the SLwF framework in real IoT scenarios and extensively evaluated its performance using four publicly available datasets. Compared to other related research (e.g., IoTSL), SLwF performs better in terms of final accuracy and robustness while avoiding excessive device energy consumption. © 2014 IEEE.

Decentralized MIMO systems With Imperfect CSI Using LMMSE Receivers

Centralized baseband processing (CBP) is required to achieve the full potential of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, due to the large number of antennas, CBP suffers from two major issues: 1) Extensive data interconnection between radio frequency (RF) circuitry and the central processing unit;and 2) high-dimensional computation. To this end, decentralized baseband processing (DBP) has been proposed, where the antennas at the base station are partitioned into clusters connected to separate RF circuits and equipped with separate computing units. However, the optimal fusion scheme that maximizes signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) and the related performance analysis for DBP with general spatial correlation and imperfect channel state information (CSI) have not been studied. In this paper, we consider a decentralized MIMO system where all clusters adopt linear minimum mean-square error (LMMSE) receivers. We first establish an optimal linear fusion scheme that has high computational and data input/output costs. To reduce the cost, we then propose two suboptimal fusion schemes with reduced complexity. For all three schemes, we study the SINR performance by leveraging random matrix theory and demonstrate conditions under which the suboptimal schemes are optimal. Furthermore, we determine the optimal regularization parameter for the LMMSE receiver, identify the best antenna partitioning strategy, and prove that the SINR will decrease as the number of clusters increases. Numerical simulations validate the accuracy of the theoretical results. © 2025 IEEE.

The Monniaux Problem in abstract interpretation asks, roughly speaking, whether the following question is decidable: Given a program P, a safety (e.g., non-reachability) specification , and an abstract domain of invariants , does there exist an inductive invariant in guaranteeing that program P meets its specification I† The Monniaux Problem is of course parameterised by the classes of programs and invariant domains that one considers. In this article, we show that the Monniaux Problem is undecidable for unguarded affine programs and semilinear invariants (unions of polyhedra). Hyperspectral Image Classification Method Based on Global Space-Spectral Attention Mechanism

In hyperspectral remote sensing imagery, pixel interactions within defined spatial extents result in the mixing of adjacent pixels. Additionally, the high similarity of adjacent spectra leads to information redundancy, which hinders the extraction of global spatial and spectral correlations. In order to solve the problems of mixed adjacent pixels and redundant adjacent spectra, this work offers a hyperspectral image classification approach that uses a global space-spectral attention mechanism. First, the proposed method’s global spatial attention module uses multi-scale dilated convolution to produce a bigger receptive field to be capable of capturing global spatial correlation and obtain unmixed pixel information. Then, the global spectral attention module designs a spectral domain partition algorithm, using the combination of regional density as well as information entropy as the threshold to divide spectrum into dispersed subsets and eliminate redundant information. The global context information for entire spectral band is fully exploited, and correlation of the global spectral information is extracted. Finally, the two modules combine to provide a global correlation of space and spectrum. Experiments demonstrate that the suggested method obtains overall accuracies of 97.28%, 94.73%, and 95.76% on the three WHU-Hi hyperspectral datasets, surpassing comparison methods. © Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2024.
