University rankings can both orient and disorient potential students. In rankings, universities with very different characteristics are compared, which makes interpretation difficult. We propose the application of a clustering method, which creates groups of universities that are close to each other with respect to a subset of indicators, but the indicators also show homogeneity with respect to the universities in that group. We call such groups leagues. These leagues are defined by the data themselves and are not based on subjective criteria. We demonstrate our proposition using one member of the family of the two-way clustering method, namely, biclustering. The case we present is based on the Round University Ranking (RUR) 2020 dataset. The use of leagues could provide better guidance not only for potential applicants but also for university funding organizations and policy-makers. Our case study led to a somewhat surprising observation. In the top league (based on the RUR data and indicators), the three most important indicators measure reputation, not scientific or educational performance. © 2022, The Author(s).

The ever-growing interest in multi-criteria decision-making methods requires research that would compare them with each other as the decision-makers would need help choosing the appropriate method. It is important to highlight the differences between them, because using different methods may result in discrepancies in the obtained rankings. Additionally, it is worthwhile for the research to take into account the problems whose solution is extremely valuable. To this end, we present a comparison of five multi-criteria decision-making methods: TOPSIS, VIKOR, COMET, SPOTIS, and MARCOS in the supplier selection problem. The conducted research showed significant differences in the evaluation of the preferences of the alternatives and some discrepancies in the obtained rankings.

Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods enable a comprehensive analysis of decision options to identify the most preferred values. However, the abundance of these techniques, using different transformations in the calculations, can cause a divergence of results. However, the resulting rankings should be as consistent and reliable as possible. In this paper, we used the TOPSIS, COPRAS, SPOTIS, and COMET methods to examine the consistency of their results in the practical problem of laptop evaluation. The rankings were then compared with the reference ranking. The research showed that among the methods listed, the COPRAS method's results differed the most from the others. In turn, this technique ensured a ranking in line with the reference ranking. Based on the results, it can be established that the methods used are characterized by high consistency of results.

We investigate a category of quantum posets that generalizes the category of posets and monotone functions. Up to equivalence, its objects are hereditarily atomic von Neumann algebras equipped with quantum partial orders in Weaver’s sense. We show that this category is complete, cocomplete and symmetric monoidal closed. As a consequence, any discrete quantum family of maps from a discrete quantum space to a partially ordered set is canonically equipped with a quantum preorder. In particular, the quantum power set of a quantum set is canonically a quantum poset. Crystal Structure Prediction by Joint Equivariant Diffusion

Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP) is crucial in various scientific disciplines. While CSP can be addressed by employing currently-prevailing generative models (e.g. diffusion models), this task encounters unique challenges owing to the symmetric geometry of crystal structures—the invariance of translation, rotation, and periodicity. To incorporate the above symmetries, this paper proposes DiffCSP, a novel diffusion model to learn the structure distribution from stable crystals. To be specific, DiffCSP jointly generates the lattice and atom coordinates for each crystal by employing a periodic-E(3)-equivariant denoising model, to better model the crystal geometry. Notably, different from related equivariant generative approaches, DiffCSP leverages fractional coordinates other than Cartesian coordinates to represent crystals, remarkably promoting the diffusion and the generation process of atom positions. Extensive experiments verify that our DiffCSP significantly outperforms existing CSP methods, with a much lower computation cost in contrast to DFT-based methods. Moreover, the superiority of DiffCSP is also observed when it is extended for ab initio crystal generation. Code is available at https://***/jiaor17/DiffCSP. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

Mathematical models of the electric field distribution of direct current (DC) in 2D and 3D orthotropic piecewise-homogeneous half-infinite media, taking into account an ideal contact between components, have been constructed. To find solutions of the respective problems of potential theory, indirect methods of boundary and near-boundary elements have been used. The orthotropy effect in homogeneous and piecewise-homogeneous half-spaces has been investigated. A software implementation of the proposed approaches has been carried out. © 2020 IEEE.

Synthetic data generation is one approach for sharing individual-level data. However, to meet legislative requirements, it is necessary to demonstrate that the individuals’ privacy is adequately protected. There is no consolidated standard for measuring privacy in synthetic data. Through an expert panel and consensus process, we developed a framework for evaluating privacy in synthetic data. Our findings indicate that current similarity metrics fail to measure identity disclosure, and their use is discouraged. For differentially private synthetic data, a privacy budget other than close to zero was not considered interpretable. There was consensus on the importance of membership and attribute disclosure, both of which involve inferring personal information about an individual without necessarily revealing their identity. The resultant framework provides precise recommendations for metrics that address these types of disclosures effectively. Our findings further present specific opportunities for future research that can help with widespread adoption of synthetic data. © 2025, CC BY.

The human brain comprises large-scale networks that flexibly interact to support diverse cognitive functions and adapt to variability in daily life. The inferior parietal lobe (IPL) is a hub of multiple brain networks that sustain various cognitive domains. It remains unclear how networks respond to acute regional perturbations to maintain normal function. To provoke network-level adaptive responses to local inhibition, we combined offline transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over left or right IPL with neuroimaging during attention, semantic and social cognition tasks, and rest. Across tasks, TMS specifically affected task-active network activity with inhibition and facilitation. Network interaction responses differed between rest and tasks. After TMS over both IPL regions, large-scale network interactions were exclusively facilitated at rest, but mainly inhibited during tasks. Overall, responses to TMS primarily occurred in and between domain-general default mode and frontoparietal subnetworks. These findings elucidate short-term adaptive plasticity in response to network node inhibition. © 2024 The Authors

5G communication systems provide an end-to-end wireless connection to billions of users and devices across the globe. The quality of signals received during radio communication is notably influenced by the behavior of the radio propagation channel. A major parameter used in characterizing this channel is the Path Loss Exponent (PLE). Several works that have estimated and analyzed the PLE mostly considered the effect of distance and carrier frequency. However, the effect of base station antenna height and channel bandwidth on the PLE for 5G networks have not been adequately considered. To address this, the impact of antenna height of base station and channel bandwidth on the PLE within the 5G Frequency Range 1 (FR1) frequencies was investigated in this study, specifically at 800, 3500, and 5900 MHz. The licensed EDX Signal Pro software® with Cirrus high resolution global terrain and clutter data base was utilized to model, simulate and analyze the PLE for Kano City, Nigeria. Results showed that for the tested frequencies, an increase in either base station height or channel bandwidth leads to a significant reduction in the PLE. This study can be utilized by network planning engineers and the wireless research community to further improve network implementation and optimization toward understanding the behavior of signal propagation in 5G networks and beyond. © 2023 IEEE.
