Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is becoming one of the most frequent degenerative and irreversible diseases in elderly people. Its early detection and diagnosis is also a difficult and time-intensive task. The recent advances in Machine Learning (ML) and computer Vision (CV) created new paths to automatically detect KOA in the early stages. Detecting and grading the severity of KOA requires a dedicated ML model. This paper proposes a Side-by-Side Additive Network (SSANet)-based model for detecting and grading the severity of KOA. Since KOA affects the knee joint space by narrowing the gap between the joints, we preprocess the X-ray images to detect the Region of Interest (ROI) before the training of the model. From experimental results, it is evidenced that the ROI selection is really improving the detection accuracy of the model. Unlike sequentially connected convolution layer-based deep learning models, the proposed SSANet is based on a parallel convolution layer to reduce the degradation of feature quality. Again, to enhance the edge feature maps, we apply an additive layer that couples the previous layers’ convolutional output. SSANet captures both high-level and low-level features to predict the KOA severity effectively. The presence of a smaller number of layers and fewer numbers of learnable parameters than the existing popular deep learning models, make SSANet a time and space-efficient network. Moreover, the performance of the proposed SSANet in detecting KOA severity is significantly superior to that of other popular state-of-the-art networks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The COVID-19 epidemic has been a significant healthcare challenge across the world. COVID-19 is transmitted predominately by respiratory droplets generated when people breathe, talk, cough, or sneeze. Wearing a mask is the primary, effective, and convenient method of blocking 80% of respiratory infections. Therefore, many face mask detection systems have been developed to supervise hospitals, airports, publication transportation, sports venues, and retail locations. However, the current commercial solutions are typically bundled with software or hardware, impeding public accessibility. In this paper, we propose an in-browser serverless edge-computing-based face mask detection solution, called Web-based efficient AI recognition of masks (WearMask), which can be deployed on common devices (e.g., cell phones, tablets, computers) with internet connections using web browsers. The serverless edge-computing design minimizes hardware costs (e.g., specific devices or cloud computing servers). It provides a holistic edge-computing framework for integrating (1) deep learning models (YOLO), (2) high-performance neural network inference computing framework (NCNN), and (3) a stack-based virtual machine (WebAssembly). For end-users, our solution has the advantages of (1) serverless edge-computing design with minimal device limitation and privacy risk, (2) installation-free deployment, (3) low computing requirements, and (4) high detection speed. The term "cloud computing" refers to a vast network of linked, virtually hosted, and easily updatable computer resources. That are capable of consisting of a number of different apps and offering a number of different services to customers, and that have the potential to do so. Customers are required to pay for the cost of using the Services in accordance with the company's "pay-for-use only" policy. However, there are certain firms, such as Google Inc, that provide customers with particular free storage space even though the services provided by the company are limited, specifically with regard to the public cloud. A third-party service provider frequently owns and maintains the infrastructure required to run cloud computing services. But because more and more data and files pertaining to individuals and businesses are being stored in the cloud, worries have started to grow about how safe it actually is. Among these are the protection of software for virtualization and distributed computing, the safety of application software, the administration of identities, and the authentication and restriction of access. Nevertheless, efficient user authentication is the most essential need of cloud computing, as it limits unauthorized usage of a cloud server. Cloud computing has become increasingly popular in recent years. In this research, we present a new authentication method between users and online computing systems that is based on the suggested secure hash algorithm (SHA-3) and makes use of the lightweight Sosemanuk method. We created this technique. That system is going to be known as the SoSha3 system. The design that has been proposed for the system deals with data in three different sizes: 128, 256, and 512 bits. In order to make these authentication systems suitable for cloud computing at high rates, some modifications were made to them. A lot of metrics and tools have been devised to measure the complexity of software systems. Through measurement, software professionals can have a better understanding and control of a software's complexity. In this paper, we reviewed complexity metrics and tools for object-oriented systems. The existing tools measure either implemented systems which may be source code or compile binaries, or class diagrams. The tools that measure implemented systems already offer a wide variety of features to satisfy different needs. However, the tools that measure class diagrams are not only poor in amount, but all take in class diagram XMI files, with none of them taking in PlantUML class diagram source code. PlantUML is a popular text-based UML diagramming tool that enables users to define UML diagrams with a domain specific language then renders the diagram for them. Hence, we developed a web application that measures class diagram complexity via PlantUML class diagram source code. It measures five class metrics and seven system metrics visualized as tables and bar charts, with the results exportable to PDF and CSV. Our tool's measurements were also evaluated to be correct when it is within our scope of supported syntax. © 2023 IEEE.

Defects in gastric progenitor cell differentiation are associated with various gastric disorders, including atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and gastric cancer. However, the mechanisms underlying the multilineage differentiation of gastric progenitor cells during healthy homeostasis remain poorly understood. Here, using a single-cell RNA sequencing method, Quartz-Seq2, we analyzed the gene expression dynamics of progenitor cell differentiation toward pit cell, neck cell, and parietal cell lineages in healthy adult mouse corpus tissues. Enrichment analysis of pseudotime-dependent genes and a gastric organoid assay revealed that EGFR-ERK signaling promotes pit cell differentiation, whereas NF-κB signaling maintains gastric progenitor cells in an undifferentiated state. In addition, pharmacological inhibition of EGFR in vivo resulted in a decreased number of pit cells. Although activation of EGFR signaling in gastric progenitor cells has been suggested as one of the major inducers of gastric cancers, our findings unexpectedly identified that EGFR signaling exerts a differentiation-promoting function, not a mitogenic function, in normal gastric homeostasis.

Recently, the development of artificial intelligence technologies has accelerated advancements in threshold segmentation techniques based on intelligent optimization algorithms, which have demonstrated good performance across various types of medical images. However, research specifically focused on the segmentation of Prostate Cancer Pathology Image (PCPI) remains limited. To fill this gap and improve the efficiency of prostate cancer diagnosis, this study proposes a threshold segmentation scheme based on intelligent optimization algorithms, MOLMVO-Rényi, specifically designed for PCPI. This scheme first enhances the optimization capabilities of the multi-verse optimizer algorithm using multiple strategies (multi-population topological structure and orthogonal learning) to propose MOLMVO. Then it utilizes MOLMVO to optimize the thresholds for image segmentation, aiming to maximize the Rényi entropy of the segmented images. Experimental validation on 67 privately collected PCPIs indicates that the proposed scheme shows significant competitive advantages, providing strong support for the early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. © 2024 IEEE.

We performed machine learning using spectrum analysis and power spectra of electroencephalograms (EEGs) of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Spectrum analysis was performed on the EEGs of MCI patients and healthy individuals, and the power spectrum values of the two groups were calculated and compared. Based on the power spectrum values of the theta and alpha bands, models for discriminating MCI patients were created using a support vector machine (SVM), and their accuracies were compared. In the spectrum analysis, the theta band showed significantly higher power spectrum values in the MCI group. In the comparison of the accuracies of SVM models, the model using the theta band showed higher values in parameters, such as accuracy rate. These results suggested that the power spectrum values of the theta band are useful for discriminating MCI patients. © 2024 IEEE.

In the modern era, technology has become an integral part of human life, particularly in image processing. This advanced technology is now applied to parking areas to identify vacant parking spaces. The application is designed to detect empty parking slots in real time using image data captured by a camera as input. The system then automatically scans for available parking spaces, displaying the results on the interface with green indicators for empty slots and red for occupied ones. The process involves several key stages, such as image pre-processing, image segmentation, and object detection. The system employs the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) method to enhance its object detection capabilities. This system achieves a high accuracy rate of 94%under well-lit conditions. This novel technology optimizes parking management, providing an effective and dependable method to monitor parking availability in real time. © 2024 IEEE.
