Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease and is characterised by low bone mineral density and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, which lead to an increased risk of fracture. The large majority of people who have osteoporosis are not aware of this until a fracture occurs. However if osteoporosis is detected early and treated accordingly the fracture risk of a person can be reduced to a minimum. For this reason, the present study examines the application of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach for the prognosis of osteoporosis. More specifically, Probabilistic Neural Networks (PNNs) were trained and evaluated on a large data set consisting of 3426 records. The obtained results show that for the problem in question PNNs provide an effective potential technique for the evaluation of osteoporosis risk. Furthermore, both an experimental and a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis were performed with the aim of assessing the contribution of each risk factor to the prognosis of the disease. The results of both analyses agree and identify the age and weight of a person as the most significant factors. © 2010 CRL Publishing Ltd.

Moodle is an open source and one of the most popular learning management systems (LMS) currently. Developers can customize functionality and modules for educating purpose. When integrating with other systems, developers have to deal with the barrier that comes from Moodle servers with different version or other human resource system. Therefore it will be valuable for allowing teachers who are at different places to exchanging teaching materials. To solve these problems, a set of Course Communication services based on web service were built. With these services, developers can more easily build connection among Moodle servers and other kinds of systems. In addition, A Moodle module called OpenMoodle is also developed. With this module, instructors can exchange course materials and teach collaboratively with other educators and monitor student's learning status by holding course materials locally. In addition, students can acquire material from multiple resources.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are a key part of the current hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) drive system, and the sophisticated performance such as small size, high power density, and high efficiency is required to the PMSMs in the HEV drive system. Therefore, rare earth permanent magnet is generally employed in the PMSMs in order to satisfy those demands. However, rare earth materials contained in the rare earth permanent magnet have several concerns caused by uneven distribution, because the rare earth materials such as neodymium and dysprosium depend on China for 90% or more of the world share. Accordingly, the rare earth materials have the undeniable possibility of sudden rise of price or reinforcement of export restriction. On the other hand, the HEVs tend to be promoted rapidly because of growing concern about environmental problems. Therefore, it is very important to develop rare-earth-free motors for the next generation HEV drive system. This paper proposes a ferrite permanent magnet axial gap motor without the rare earth materials for the HEVs. In addition, the proposed motor structure and the analytical results with the 3D-FEA are introduced.

Sensor networks are a sensing, computing and communication infrastructure that are able to observe and respond to phenomena in the natural environment and in our physical and cyber infrastructure. The sensors themselves can range from small passive micro-sensors to larger scale, controllable weather-sensing platforms. In order to simulate Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), we implemented a simulation system as a Digital Eco-System (DES) approach. We implement our system as a multi-modal system considering different topologies, radio models, routing protocols, MAC protocols, and different number of nodes. However, in this work, we consider the goodput metric and evaluate the performance of WSN for AODV and TwoRayGround model considering different topologies and number of nodes. To reduce the consumed energy of a large scale WSN network, we consider a mobile sink node in the observing area. We investigate how the sensor network performs in the case when the sink node moves. We compare the simulation results for two cases: when the sink node is mobile and stationary. The simulation results have shown that for the case of mobile sink, the goodput of random topology is better than the case of lattice. In the case of stationary sink, the goodput is unstable. In case of mobile sink, the goodput is stable and better than in case of stationary sink.

Motion is one of the most important characteristics in clinical epileptology. In developing an integrated motion analysis system for epileptic patients or children with neurological disorders (e.g. ADHD) we surveyed and analyzed current efforts in vision-based human motion analysis in epilepsy as well as all possible forms of motion typically encountered in known epileptic syndromes. This paper presents the results in a systematic way, and includes a critical discussion of methodological and scientific challenges that need to be addressed in this particular domain.

Distribution of fouling may largely affect flux of the microfiltration membrane, in which its formation is related to several factors such as operating pressure, flow rate, concentration/composition of feed solution, and membrane material. It therefore is essential to evaluate fouling distribution on microfiltration membranes before they will be further applied. In this study, an attempt was explored to develop methods and techniques for measuring the fouling distribution using a 35 MHz high frequency ultrasound system. The experiments were carried out from a waste water treatment system that is composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane with nominal pore size of 0.22 (mu)m and feed solutions with the humic acid solution of 4 ppm. The operating pressure and flow rate were respectively maintained at 1 bar and 0.22 L/min. Areas of those filtration membranes after 5, 15, 30, 60, and 100 minutes filtration durations were raster scanned by the high frequency ultrasound system. The peak-to-peak voltage (V_(pp)) of ultrasonic signals reflected from the surface of membrane was calculated for the reconstruction of C-scan images. The average V_(pp) and flux of filtrate were found to decrease exponentially with the increase of filtration duration. In accordance with the flux of filtrate approached to saturate, the variation of average V_(pp) tended to be nearly minimum. It can be readily observed for the changes of average V_(pp) that decreased from 3.02+-0.05 V at the beginning of filtration to 1.73+-0.25 V at 100 min duration after filtration with the humic acid solution of 4 ppm. Moreover, the fouling of the humic acid on the membrane was not homogeneously distributed. The acoustic impedance mismatch between the fouling of humic acid and PVDF membrane led the amplitude of ultrasonic signals reflected from the membrane surface to decrease with the increase of fouling deposition. It is deficiency to use accuracy as a measurement to evaluate model classifying ability. This paper proposes a measurement method which uses the area under the ROC curve, or AUC value, to evaluate the performance of the model. Furthermore, applying cross validation and grid-search methods, through designed algorithms, to build an optimization of support vector machines medical prediction model. The model was applied to diagnosis of predicting of coronary heart disease. The results show that the model has the characteristics of global optimization and easy to implement.

To reduce the consumed energy of a large scale sensor network, we consider a mobile sink node in the observing area. In this work, we investigate how the sensor network performs in the case when the sink node moves. We compare the simulation results for two cases: when the sink node is mobile and stationary considering lattice and random topologies using AODV protocol. The simulation results have shown that for the case of mobile sink, the consumed energy is better than the stationary sink (about half of stationary sink in lattice topology). Also for mobile sink, the consumed energy of lattice topology is better than random topology.

In this paper we discusses some pros and cons of using AJAX for increasing the usability of Web applications. As AJAX allows Web applications look like desktop applications, it can increase the learnability of a Web application. Nevertheless, AJAX can also be the source of end user frustration if the XMLHttpRequest is not supported by the browser, Javascript is not available, or an Internet connection is missing. We also provide some workarounds for server response time gaps, for example by providing visible user feedback messages) and enabling the back button to work properly.

Wireless sensors networks (WSNs) are susceptible because of its characters. The traditional security mechanisms can not be use to protect the WSNs. In the paper, a trusted transport mode based on cluster-merkle-tree for WSNs (TTMCMT) is proposed, which can provide a method of trusted transport with WSNs of great restriction. The object of scheme is to realize secure authentication and secure message transmission and resist forgery attack, replay attack tamper attack and intrusion attack. We describe the trusted scheme and present performance analyses, which clearly show the scheme is trusted, secure and effective in wireless sensor networks with minimal cost. © 2010 IEEE.
