In recent years, Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are continuing to attract the attention for their potential use in several fields. Mobility and the absence of any fixed infrastructure make MANETs very attractive for mobility and rescue operations and time-critical applications. In this paper, we present the implementation and analysis of our implemented MANET testbed considering the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol. We consider two models. One when all the nodes are static and another one when one node is moving. The mobile node moves toward the destination at a regular speed and when arrives at the corner of stairs is stops for about three seconds. In this work, we assess the performance of our MANET testbed in terms of throughput and packet loss. From our experiments, we found that the OLSR protocol has a good performance when nodes are in stationary state. However, when the node moves the throughput is decreased. We observed that the number of packet loss increases after 2-hops for static model and after 1-hop for moving model. But, when the node is moving, the packet loss for 2-hops to 4-hops is almost the same.

In multimedia data analysis, automated indexing of conversational video is an emerging topic. One challenging problem in this topic is the recognition of higher-level concepts, such as miscommunications in conversations. While detecting miscommunications is generally easy for speakers as well as observers, it is not currently understood which cues contribute to their detection and to what extent. To make use of the knowledge on gestural cues in multimedia systems, the applicability of machine learning is investigated as a means of detecting miscommunication from gestural patterns observed in psychotherapeutic face-to-face conversations. Various features are taken from gesture data, and both simple and complex classifiers are constructed using these features. Both short-term and long-term effects are tested using different time window sizes. Also, two types of gestures, communicative and non-communicative, are considered. The experimental results suggest that there is no single gestural feature that can explain the occurrence of semantic miscommunication. Another interesting finding is that gestural cues correlate more with long-term gestural patterns than with short-term ones.

Mesh router nodes placement is a central problem to Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). An efficient placement of mesh router nodes is indispensable for achieving network performance in terms of both network connectivity and user coverage. Unfortunately the problem is computationally hard to solve to optimality even for small deployment areas and a small number of mesh router nodes. As WMNs are becoming an important networking infrastructure for providing cost-efficient broadband wireless connectivity, researchers are paying attention to the resolution of the mesh router placement problem through heuristic approaches in order to achieve near optimal, yet high quality solutions in reasonable time. In this work we propose and evaluate a Simulated Annealing (SA) approach to placement of mesh router nodes in WMNs. The optimization model uses two maximization objectives, namely, the size of the giant component in the network and user coverage. Both objectives are important to deployment of WMNs; the former is crucial to achieve network connectivity while the later is an indicator of the QoS in WMNs. The SA approach distinguishes for its simplicity yet its policy of neighborhood exploration allows to reach promising areas of the solution space where quality solutions could be found. We have experimentally evaluated the SA algorithm through a benchmark of generated instances, varying from small to large size, and capturing different characteristics of WMNs such as topological placements of mesh clients. The experimental results showed the efficiency of the annealing approach for the placement of mesh router nodes in WMNs.

Segmentation of neural stem cells is the preliminary step to treat and cure several brain neural diseases. There exist a number of methods to accomplish this task. However, all of these methods suffer from some problems, such as high intensity variation sensitivity, human interaction and high computational complexity. In this paper we proposed a novel edge-detection-based neural stem cell image segmentation algorithm using the local complex phase characteristics. The proposed method is an illumination and contrast invariant measurement of edge significance. Our contributions are that, local weighting summation Gaussian kernel convolution and a new model for phase deviation weighting function are introduced into the proposed model to improve the local phase measurement. In experiments, we show that the proposed method is more accurate and reliable than three existing gradient-based edge detection algorithms and Kovesi's model for neural stem cell image segmentation.

This paper presents i-m-Space, an interactive multimedia rehabilitation space that helps the post-surgery recovery of breast cancer patients. Our goal is to improve patients' physical therapy and psychological relaxation experience through careful applications of multimedia technology. i-m-Space consists of three types of breathing-based relaxation and three types for interactive exercise-based rehabilitation. Our inter-disciplinary team includes medical professionals, multimedia engineers, designers, and artists. We have implemented i-m-Space in an experimental space in collaboration a local breast cancer foundation. To evaluation i-m-Space, we have recruited several patients who recently recovered from breast cancer to use i-m-Space and to share their first-hand experiences. Our contributions includes the following: 1) injecting a sense of fun and playfulness into traditional therapy to attract patients;2) providing therapists with sufficient flexibility so they can personalize therapy sessions for each patient;3) maintaining safety of patients. © 2010 ACM.

Sensor networks are a sensing, computing and communication infrastructure that are able to observe and respond to phenomena in the natural environment and in our physical and cyber infrastructure. The sensors themselves can range from small passive micro-sensors to larger scale, controllable weather-sensing platforms. In this work, we investigate how the sensor network performs in the case when the sink node moves. We consider as a metrics for evaluation goodput and Routing Efficiency (RE). We compare the simulation results when the sink node is mobile and stationary considering lattice topology using AODV protocol. The simulation results have shown that for the case of mobile sink, the goodput is better when the number of nodes is 16. However, when the number of nodes are 100 and 256, the goodput of mobile sink is worse than stationary sink when the values T r is larger than 1pps. For both stationary and mobile sinks, the RE increases with the increase of number of sensor nodes, but the RE of mobile sink is better than the stationary sink.

Accurate identification of lesion borders is an important task in the analysis of dermoscopy images since the extraction of skin lesion borders provides important cues for accurate diagnosis. Snakes have been used for segmenting a variety of medical imagery including dermoscopy, however, due to the compromise of internal and external energy forces they can lead to under- or over-segmentation problems. In this paper, we introduce a mean shift based gradient vector flow (GVF) snake algorithm that drives the internal/external energies towards the correct direction. The proposed segmentation method incorporates a mean shift operation within the standard GVF cost function. Experimental results on a large set of diverse dermoscopy images demonstrate that the presented method accurately determines skin lesion borders in dermoscopy images.

This paper describes a Semantic Web (SW) model for gene lists and the metadata required for their practical interpretation. Our provenance information captures the context of experiments as well as the processing and analysis parameters involved in deriving the gene lists from DNA microarray experiments. We demonstrate a range of practical neuroscience queries which draw on the proposed model. Our provenance representation includes the origins of the gene list and basic information about the data set itself (e.g. last modification date and original data source), in order to facilitate the federation of gene lists with other types of Semantic Web-formatted data and include the integration of a broader molecular context through additional omics data.

The design of an efficient collaborative multirobot framework that ensures the autonomy and the individual requirements of the involved robots is a very challenging task. This requires designing an efficient platform for inter-robot communication. P2P is a good approach to achieve this goal. P2P aims at making the communication ubiquitous thereby crossing the communication boundary and has many attractive features to use it as a platform for collaborative multi-robot environments. In this work, we present the JXTA Overlay P2P system and its application for robot control. Since JXTA-Overlay is able to overcome Firewalls, Routers and NATs, it is possible to control end-devices in a WAN without changing the network security policy. We used JXTA-Overlay for the control of robot motors. We evaluated the proposed system by many experiments and have shown that the proposed system has a good performance and can be used successfully for robot control.

In this paper, the e-JIKEI Network project, a project for creating community safety with present day technology, is reviewed. With the e-JIKEI Network, each individual watches around his/her house using cameras as his/her eyes, a computer as his/her brain, and software. For privacy protection, we propose the e-JIKEI with Privacy Protection, in which people who own and manage images (the owner) and people who have the right to view the images (the viewer) are separated by the encryption of the images. In order to evaluate our concept, social experiments have been performed. The present status and future prospects have been discussed in detail.
