Towards Dynamic Task Scheduling and Reconfiguration using an Aspect Oriented Approach applied on Real-time concerns of Industrial Systems

High performance computational platforms are required by industries that make use of automatic methods to manage modern machines, which are mostly controlled by high-performance specific hardware with processing capabilities. It usually works together with CPUs, forming a powerful execution platform. On an industrial production line, distinct tasks can be assigned to be processed by different machines depending on certain conditions and production parameters. However, these conditions can change at run-time influenced mainly by machine failure and maintenance, priorities changes, and possible new better task distribution. Therefore, self-adaptive computing is a potential paradigm as it can provide flexibility to explore the machine resources and improve performance on different execution scenarios of the production line. One approach is to explore scheduling and run-time task migration among machines’ hardware towards a balancing of tasks, aiming performance and production gain. This way, the monitoring of time requirements and its crosscutting behaviour play an important role for task (re)allocation decisions. This paper introduces the use of software aspect-oriented paradigms to perform machines’ monitoring and a self-rescheduling strategy of tasks to address non-functional timing constraints. As case study, tasks for a production line of aluminium ingots are designed.

In this study, we used latest reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO) and combined the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES). The combination provides larger support range and applies features of mechanical structures in walking assistant. The coordination of FES especially helps to restore the walking abilities that paralyzed patients lost. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

The purpose of this study is to analysis the hospital information security risk and to raise organizational stakeholders' risk sense. Because of most risk management methods do not explicitly support different stakeholder perspectives and those that do, often limit the number of stakeholders and assume that consensus can be reached. Therefore, this paper adopted the ISO17799 practical standard with non-expected utility theory for risk analysis. In order to make sure the feasibility, we conducted a field study for a medical center of middle Taiwan to comment the risk of identification, analyses, measurement and control, respectively. Based on the result of this study, we found that the risk measurement of the proposed methodology be able to elicit the real risk attitude of each stakeholder more accurate. Further, it not only can realize the more accurate potential risk incident by utilize the non-parameter method, but also achieve the purpose of shift risk and control losses.

Sensor networks are a sensing, computing and communication infrastructure that are able to observe and respond to phenomena in the natural environment and in our physical and cyber infrastructure. The sensors themselves can range from small passive microsensors to larger scale, controllable weather-sensing platforms. Presently, there are many research work for sensor networks. In our previous work, we implemented a simulation system for sensor networks and simulated the proposed system with reactive and preactive protocols. In this work, we want to investigate how the sensor network performs in case of using OLSR protocol and compare the simulation results with AODV protocol. The simulation results have shown that the consumed energy for OLSR protocol is better than AODV protocol. Also, the goodput for the case of using OLSR does not change too much compared with the case using AODV, but the goodput is not good when the number of nodes is increased.

Background: Human ovarian carcinoma is a silent killer. Most patients with human ovarian carcinoma are diagnosed in the advanced stages. Currently, no effective means of early detection are available. Identifying genes that distinguish early cancers from normal tissue may provide insight to the initiation and progression of ovarian cancer. Methods: A large-scale gene expression profiling using 9,600 genes-complementary DNA array to study ovarian tumors was conducted. We analyzed 13 benign tumors, 22 invasive cancers (seven stage I and 15 stage III), and 16 normal ovaries. Cluster analysis revealed two major groups: the early-stage cluster that included 13 benign tumors and seven stage I cancers;and the late-stage cluster that included all stage III cancers. Results: There were 433 upregulated and 60 downregulated genes from the early-stage cluster, and 395 upregulated and 101 downregulated genes from the late-stage cluster. These genes showed altered functions for tumor/cancers, functions such as cell growth, cell cycle control, differentiation, signaling, apoptosis, ion transport, and morphogenesis. Of most interest is the downregulation of nuclear receptor proteins. Differentially expressed genes between early-stage cluster and late-stage clusters were identified. We found 90 genes preferentially overly expressed and 165 genes relatively downregulated at late-stage cancers. The advanced cancer appears differently from early-stage cancer in cell growth, cell adhesion, hormone activity, morphology, and cell-cell signaling compared with benign or early-stage cancer. Of particular interest are enzymes corresponding to pteridine biosynthesis, reported for the first time in this study. Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction showed that GCH1, KRT18, H3F3A, and MYBL2 were overly expressed in all cancer tissues, while MDFI, ARP3BETA, COL16A1, and MLN discriminated late-stage from early-stage cancers. The mobile cellular systems are expected to support multiple services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS).But, the ability of wireless systems to accommodate expected growth of traffic load and broadband services is limited by available radio frequency spectrum. Call admission control (CAC) is one of the resource management functions, which regulates network access to ensure QoS provisioning. However, the decision for CAC is very challenging issue due to user mobility, limited radio spectrum, and multimedia traffic characteristics. In our previous work, we proposed a fuzzy-based CAC system and compared the performance of the proposed system with shadow cluster concept (SCC). In this work, we extend our work by considering the priority of the on-going connections. We evaluate by simulations the performance of the proposed system and compare its performance with our previous work. The performance evaluation shows that the proposed system has a good behavior in keeping the QoS of on-going connections.

The Probabilistic Index Map (PIM) model was originally proposed for video processing to extract background of video frames. In this paper, we introduce the PIM model for texture segmentation. We first extract texture features based on Laws and Gabor filters respectively. Then we present a fuzzy k-means method to generate the index map and palette, and use the PIM model to improve the segmentation accuracy. Based on the comparison of experimental results produced using different features and different resolutions, we show the proposed method is effective for texture segmentation.

Wireless mobile networks and devices are becoming increasingly popular to provide users the access anytime and anywhere. The mobile systems are based on cellular approach and the area is covered by cells that overlap each other. Many handover algorithms are proposed in the literature. However, to make a better handover and keep the QoS in wireless networks is very difficult task. For this reason, new intelligent algorithms should be implemented to deal with this problem. In this paper, we carried out a comparison study of two handover systems based on fuzzy logic. We implement two fuzzy-based handover systems (FBHS). We call them FBHS1 and FBHS2. The performance evaluation via simulations shows that FBHS2 has better behavior than FBHS2 and can avoid ping-pong effect in all simulation cases.

Data analysis processes in scientific applications can be expressed as coarse-grain workflows of complex data processing operations with data flow dependencies between them. Performance optimization of these workflows can be viewed as a search for a set of optimal values in a multi-dimensional parameter space. While some performance parameters such as grouping of workflow components and their mapping to machines do not affect the accuracy of the output, others may dictate trading the output quality of individual components (and of the whole workflow) for performance. This paper describes an integrated framework which is capable of supporting performance optimizations along multiple dimensions of the parameter space. Using two real-world applications in the spatial data analysis domain, we present an experimental evaluation of the proposed framework. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Syllogistic reasoning is a form of deductive reasoning in which a logical conclusion is drawn from premises. Forward-chaining syllogistic reasoning refers to response pattern of figure 1 syllogism (M-P, S-M, S-P with response chain of S-M-P) and backward-chaining syllogistic reasoning refers to response pattern of figure 4 syllogism (P-M, S-M, S-P with response chain of P-M-S). Previous psychological studies show that forward-chaining is significantly higher accuracy and less response time, and backward-chaining is significantly lower accuracy and more response time. However, little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. We carried out a study using event-related fMRI to clarify their neural substrates. Conjunction analysis showed common areas of activations were the bilateral caudate, the left ventral lateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), the left superior parietal lobule, and the right lingual gyrus. Direct comparisons showed distinct area of activation for forward-chaining in contrast to backward-chaining involved more activation in the left inferior parietal lobule, whereas backward-chaining in contrast to forward-chaining recruited the left dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), the left medial frontal gyrus, and the right cerebellum. The results suggested that forward-chaining and backward-chaining syllogistic reasoning engaged distinct neural substrates based on common brain areas.
