The increasing number of cataract sufferers is a serious problem because cataracts are a leading cause of blindness in the world. To avoid blindness from cataracts, we need to detect them early. Today, ophthalmologists use a slit lamp to diagnose cataracts. This equipment is expensive and requires special training to use it. Unfortunately, a lot of developing countries have a limited number of ophthalmologists and health facilities, while a lot of cataract sufferers live in developing countries. Our algorithm is aimed at such developing countries and rural areas, and its main equipment is a compact digital camera. This equipment is inexpensive and easy for anyone to use without special training. Examination can be easily carried out in an outpatient department. We have already proposed a cataract screening method for the equipment that considers about specular reflection and statistical texture appearance inside the pupil. However, in order to accomplish our goal, not only the screening method itself, but also other aspects such as compactness and ease of use are crucial. In this paper, we will discuss system design for a compact cataract screening system. The final goal of our research is developing a simple and robust screening system for cataract with a compact digital camera. A user simply takes a patient's photograph and the system will automatically analyze the image by extracting information inside a pupil, including specular reflection analysis and texture appearance analysis, for distinguishing between serious and non-serious conditions. We emphasize how to implement our system in real conditions by giving a recommendation for acquiring appropriate image data while taking a photograph so that our system will work well. The results in a real implementation are similar to our recommendation.

In this study, osteoblasts (OBs) were insonated with low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) of different exposure durations to extensively investigate ultrasound exposure on the growth of cells. OBs were seeded and then were incubated for 24 hours to allow cells to be adhered on the culture plate. Subsequently, LIPUS of a fixed 100 mW/cm 2 intensity from a 1 MHz and 20% duty cycle within 1 kHz pulse repetition frequency was arranged to respectively stimulate various groups of passage OBs for 3, 5, 10 and 20 minutes daily. Another experiment was also arranged using the same protocol to insonify groups of differentiation OBs for 14 days. The insonification responses for those OBs were evaluated by cell morphology, viability, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, Alizarin red-S staining, and mRNA expression by reverse transcriptase ploymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results showed that the proliferation of those insonified OBs for 10 minutes tended to increase to around 1.07 fold compared to cells of the control group after the fourth day of experiments. Similar tendency for the ALP activity was observed, in which the largest activity and proliferation rate of OBs were measured to be at the sixth day after insonation. The largest mineralization of OBs enhanced by LIPUS insonification also corresponded to cells insonified for 10 minutes daily. Moreover, the RT-PCR analysis revealed that those cells insonified for 10 minutes daily tended to increase 2 fold mRNA levels of osteocalcin than those of control group. This study also demonstrated that both proliferation and activation of ALP synthesis of OBs may be enhanced by LIPUS stimulation and is exposure duration dependence in which sufficient longer insonification duration brings more effective in promoting the OBs growth.

Event-based biosurveillance is a scientific discipline in which diverse sources of data, many of which are available from the Internet, are characterized prospectively to provide information on infectious disease events. Biosurveillance complements traditional public health surveillance to provide both early warning of infectious disease events as well as situational awareness. The Global Health Security Action Group (GHSAG) of the Global Health Security Initiative is developing a biosurveillance capability that integrates and leverages component systems from member nations. This work discusses these biosurveillance systems and identifies needed future studies.

In recent years, with the development of the economy and the advancement of the national income, personal healthcare has been becoming an important issue. Since the health examination can help people understand their own health conditions clearly, many people make regularly health examinations to avoid missing the best treatment time. So the health examination is an important role for people's health statuses. However, people only get aware of the result of health examination report but they are not clear whether their health trends are high-risk or not. In this paper, we proposed a novel framework for discovering health risk patterns and the relationships between the patterns and a target disease by mining historic health examination data. Moreover, a prediction model for the target disease can be constructed effectively by the discovered information. Through the framework, the physicians can early provide health alerts and medical treatments for people to effectively increase the quality of disease prevention.

This paper proposes a recommendation method considering users' time series contexts which are situations that have occurred/will occur in the past/future. There are some recommendation methods that provide information suitable for users' action patterns as the recommendation methods considering them. These methods provide information referring to the other users that have a similar action pattern to that of an active user. However, since a user's action pattern changes depending on the user's contexts, the methods need to refer to the other users' action patterns related to the current user's contexts. In this paper, we propose a recommendation method considering the user's time series contexts considering that the user's action pattern changes depending on the user's contexts. Copyright 2009 ACM.

We propose an active mask segmentation framework that combines the advantages of statistical modeling, smoothing, speed and flexibility offered by the traditional methods of region-growing, multiscale, multiresolution and active contours respectively. At the crux of this framework is a paradigm shift from evolving contours in the continuous domain to evolving multiple masks in the discrete domain. Thus, the active mask framework is particularly suited to segment digital images. We demonstrate the use of the framework in practice through the segmentation of punctate patterns in fluorescence microscope images. Experiments reveal that statistical modeling helps the multiple masks converge from a random initial configuration to a meaningful one. This obviates the need for an involved initialization procedure germane to most of the traditional methods used to segment fluorescence microscope images. While we provide the mathematical details of the functions used to segment fluorescence microscope images, this is only an instantiation of the active mask framework. We suggest some other instantiations of the framework to segment different types of images. © 2009 SPIE.

This research intended to study the effects of utilizing games in health e-learning network on teaching third graders in elementary schools about nutrition. The studied groups of this research were 2 classes of 33 third graders; the two classes were separated into experimental and control group. The experiment was implemented in a four-week duration. The experimental group learned the knowledge of nutrition based on game playing on a national health e-learning network, whereas the control group was lectured with multi-media slide shows. During the learning process, the two groups underwent the steps of pretest, learning and posttest. The result revealed that students received better scores on nutrition knowledge test and dietary behavior assessments in the experimental group, which are evidence of the beneficial impact of health e-learning network's games on nutrition education and dietary behavior among elementary school students. This however, did not show much difference between the two groups in the assessment of nutrition attitude. Within the experimental group, the results did not differ much between the girls and boys in all three assessments.

The discovery of biomarkers and the underlying causes of diseases are enabled through the analysis of biological samples and data stored in biobanks. Biological samples and their associated data are expensive to collect and maintain, and it is important to store and manage them efficiently. During processing, samples and data go through a number of procedures and techniques, which are often in different locations and by individuals with different access permissions. It is essential to maintain the link between the samples and their associated data throughout the processes they undergo. This paper presents a novel system of tracking samples and data from collection through processing to storage and retrieval, which is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This system ensures the security and reliability of sample data as well as locationindependent recording and updating of sample data, as they move along the workflow. ©2009 IEEE.

Music provides a tool to study numerous aspects of neuroscience from motion-skill to emotion since listening to and producing music involves many brain functions. The musician's brain is also regarded as an ideal model to investigate plasticity of the human brain. In this paper, an EEG-based neural network is proposed to assess neuroplasticity induced by musical training. A musical chord perception experiment is designed to acquire and compare the behavioral and neural responses of musicians and non-musicians. The ERPs elicited by the consonant and dissonant chords are combined together as the features of the model. The principle component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce feature dimensions and the dimension-reduced features are input to a feedforward neural network to recognize the brain potentials belong to a musician or a non-musician. The accuracy can reach 97% in average for leave-one-out cross validation of six subjects in this experiment. It demonstrates the feasibility of assessing effects of musical training by ERP signals elicited by musical chord perception.

This paper is motivated by Ellgring's work in non-verbal communication in depression to measure and compare the levels of facial activity, before and after treatment, of endogenous and neurotic depressives. Similar to that work, we loosely associate the measurements with Action Units (AU) groups from the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). However, we use the neologism Region Units (RU) to describe regions of the face that encapsulate AUs. In contrast to Ellgring's approach, we automatically generate the measurements and provide both prototypical expression recognition and RU-specific activity measurements. Latency between expressions is also measured and the system is conducive to comparison across groups and individual subjects. By using Active Appearance Models (AAM) to locate the fiduciary facial points, and MultiBoost to classify prototypical expressions and the RUs, we can provide a simple, objective, flexible and cost-effective means of automatically measuring facial activity. ©2009 IEEE.
