Learner attention affects learning efficiency. However, in many classes, teachers cannot assess the degree of attention of every student. When a teacher is capable of addressing inattentive students immediately, he can avoid situations in which students are inattentive. Many studies have analyzed student attentiveness by the applying of image detection technologies. If this mechanism can be applied to in-class learning, it will help teachers keep students attentive, and reduce teacher load during class. This study mainly applies fuzzy logic analysis of student facial images when participating in class. Applying fuzzy logic can prevent erroneous judgments associated with a single term, and help teachers deal with student attentiveness.

The construction of a wordnet from scratch requires intelligent software support. An accurate measure of semantic relatedness can be used to extract groups of semantically close words from a corpus. Such groups help a lexicographer make decisions about synset membership and synset placement in the network. We have adapted to Polish the well-known algorithm of Clustering by Committee, and tested it on the largest Polish corpus available. The evaluation by way of a plWordNet-based synonymy test used Polish WordNet, a resource still under development. The results are consistent with a few benchmarks, but not encouraging enough yet to make a wordnet writer's support tool immediately useful.

The abundance of information and communication technology and especially internet services demands changes in lecturerspsila head-on teaching methods towards new directives. This article presents some examples of human-centred use of information technology, applied in the subject of human-computer interaction. Examples include the open source learning management system moodle, video based lecturing, remote laboratory of intelligent house and an age simulator - AgeSim. This article presents the planning and execution of teaching processes with use of Moodle Web tools and exposes organizational structure as well as characteristics, which appeared during the learning process. Finally we show some benefits and weaknesses that arose during the use of the Moodle environment.

The 2008 annual conference of the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet), Asia's oldest bioinformatics organisation set up in 1998, was organized as the 7th International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB), jointly with the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology in Taiwan (BIT 2008) Conference, Oct. 20-23, 2008 at Taipei, Taiwan. Besides bringing together scientists from the field of bioinformatics in this region, InCoB is actively involving researchers from the area of systems biology, to facilitate greater synergy between these two groups. Marking the 10th Anniversary of APBioNet, this InCoB 2008 meeting followed on from a series of successful annual events in Bangkok (Thailand), Penang (Malaysia), Auckland (New Zealand), Busan (South Korea), New Delhi (India) and Hong Kong. Additionally, tutorials and the Workshop on Education in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (WEBCB) immediately prior to the 20th Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB) Taipei Conference provided ample opportunity for inducting mainstream biochemists and molecular biologists from the region into a greater level of awareness of the importance of bioinformatics in their craft. In this editorial, we provide a brief overview of the peer-reviewed manuscripts accepted for publication herein, grouped into thematic areas. As the regional research expertise in bioinformatics matures, the papers fall into thematic areas, illustrating the specific contributions made by APBioNet to global bioinformatics efforts. © 2008 Ranganathan et al;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

The research by Maliranta and Rouvinen based on the Finnish industrial statistics confirms that the productivity improvements in firms correlate to organizational and process changes (Maliranta and Rouvinen, 2003 and Maliranta and Rouvinen, 2004). These results implied a further question: Which types of process changes create the most beneficial productivity improvements in different environments. This question should be of major importance when new services are applied or developed. The research on process improvements has been done in ETLA and in the University of Oulu, where the Three Viewpoint Methodology (3VPM) (Martikainen, 2007) was developed for productivity analysis. In this paper we apply the 3VPM methodology to analyze the nursing documentation process and the impact of documentation process improvement by wireless services on core nursing process in Kyoto University Hospital. The information was collected by interviews and server logs. We have analyzed the benefit of introducing wireless PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) devices to update patient data on place instead of writing it down by hand and later storing it into the system on PC (Personal computer) and consider other possible solutions like sensors, wireless tracking and touch by device paradigm. Nursing documentation process can be clearly improved and the improvement of the nursing process can be as much as 14%. This means that the same patient intensity can be achieved with less number of nurses.

SPECT using compact high resolution detector or pinhole collimator allows to image physiological functions with high resolution. However, when region-of-interest (ROI) is smaller than the object, the projection data are truncated due to radioisotope outside ROI. The truncation causes artifact and overestimation, which decrease quantitative accuracy. In theory, to eliminate the artifact and the overestimation due to truncation, the untruncated data from another large field-of-view (FOV) detector can be used even if the detector has low resolution. This study was aimed at evaluating feasibility of combination of a small FOV high resolution detector and a large FOV low resolution detector in clinical circumstance. This evaluation was performed by computer simulation with a numerical torso phantom. We tested whether the image in a selected small ROI (in this case, ROI was heart) can be obtained with high resolution and without artifact and overestimation. The small FOV detector with high resolution was with 1.14-mm resolution, 80-mm FOV and parallel collimator. The whole of heart was included in this FOV, but the surrounding area was truncated. The large FOV detector with low resolution has 9-mm resolution, 360-mm FOV and parallel collimator like conventional clinical SPECT. The untruncated projections including the whole of thorax were acquired by this detector. Gaussian noises were added to all projection data. Data from the small detector were reconstructed by maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) as iterative method, on the reconstruction matrix large enough to contain the whole of thorax. The reconstructed image from the large FOV detector was used as an initial image in iterative reconstruction. The image obtained by our proposed method had high resolution and the counts almost equivalent to that of original image in the small ROI. Nailfold capillary microscopy examination has been used since late 1950s as a non-invasive in-vivo technique for diagnosing and monitoring connective tissue disease in adults. Disorders such as Raynaud’s phenomenon, progressive systemic sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis were detected in more than 80% of adult patients, after analyzing such high resolution images. In this research paper, we propose a method to classify nailfold capillary microscopy images into SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) and PSS (Progress Systemic sclerosis) diseases. Patients’ with Systemic Sclerosis is characterized by thickening and fibrosis of the skin and by involvement of internal organs. Some conditions and factors are important when judging about the diagnosis. RP (Raynaud’s Phenomenon) is verified in the first step, since most of the SLE and PSS features are raised by RP. Based on the features found in both of SLE and PSS patients, it is possible then classify SLE and PSS patients into the correct class, since a number of other conditions exist. Based on statistical data collected in Taichung Veteran’s General Hospital (TCVGH), Taiwan, higher percentage of adult patients are found with SLE patients, when compared with PSS.

Most of the thyroid nodules are heterogeneous with various internal components, which confuse many radiologists and physicians with their various echo patterns in thyroid nodules. A lot of texture extraction methods were used to characterize the thyroid nodules. Accordingly, the thyroid nodules could be classified by the corresponding textural features. In this paper, five support vector machines (SVM) were adopted to select the significant textural features and to classify the nodular lesions of thyroid. Experimental results showed the proposed method classifies the thyroid nodules correctly and efficiently. The comparison results demonstrated that the capability of feature selection of the proposed method was similar to the sequential floating forward selection (SFFS) method. However, the proposed method is faster than the SFFS method.

Inspired by Weber's Law, this paper proposes a simple, yet very powerful and robust local descriptor, Weber Local Descriptor (WLD). It is based on the fact that human perception of a pattern depends on not only the change of a stimulus (such as sound, lighting, et al.) but also the original intensity of the stimulus. Specifically, WLD consists of two components: its differential excitation and orientation. A differential excitation is a function of the ratio between two terms: One is the relative intensity differences of its neighbors against a current pixel;the other is the intensity of the current pixel. An orientation is the gradient orientation of the current pixel. For a given image, we use the differential excitation and the orientation components to construct a concatenated WLD histogram feature. Experimental results on Brodatz textures show that WLD impressively outperforms the other classical descriptors (e.g., Gabor). Especially, experimental results on face detection show a promising performance. Although we train only one classifier based on WLD features, the classifier obtains a comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods on MIT+CMU frontal face test set, AR face dataset and CMU profile test set.
