Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network’s communication energy dissipation. However, the selection of cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In this paper, in order to deal with this problem we propose a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic and number of neighbor nodes. We evaluate the proposed system by simulations and show that proposed system makes a good selection of the cluster head.

In mobile cellular systems the handover is a very important process to maintain the desired Quality of Service (QoS). Many handover algorithms are proposed in the literature. However, to make a better handover and keep the QoS in wireless networks is very difficult. In this paper, by using random walk model and fuzzy theory we propose a new handover system. The proposed system uses 3 parameters for handoff decision: signal strength from the present Base Station (BS), signal strength from the neighbor BS, and the distance between Mobile Station (MS) and BS. The performance evaluation via simulations shows that proposed system can avoid ping-pong effect and has a good handover decision.

Due to the heightened concern about bioterrorism and emerging/reemerging infectious diseases, a flood of molecular data about human pathogens has been generated and maintained in disparate databases. However, scientific findings regarding these pathogens and their host responses are buried in the growing volume of biomedical literature and there is an urgent need to mine information pertaining to pathogenesis-related proteins especially host-pathogen protein-protein interactions from literature. In this paper, we report our exploration of developing an automated system to identify MEDLINE abstracts referring to host-pathogen protein-protein interactions. An annotated corpus consisting of 1,360 MEDLINE abstracts was generated. With this corpus, we developed and evaluated document classification systems using support vector machines (SVMs). We also investigated the effects of feature selection using the information gain (IG) measure. Document classification systems were designed at two levels, abstract-level and sentence-level. We observed that feature selection was effective not only in reducing the dimensionality of features to build a compact system, but also in improving document classification performance. We also observed abstract-level systems and sentence-level systems yielded different classification of MEDLINE abstracts, and the combination of these systems could improve the overall document classification.

The Coalition for Clinical Research-Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose Scientific Board, a group of nine academic clinicians and scientists from the United States and Europe, convened in San Francisco, California, on June 11-12, 2008, to discuss the appropriate uses of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) and the measures necessary to accurately assess the potential benefit of this practice in noninsulin-treated type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thirteen consultants from the United States, Europe, and Canada from academia, practice, and government also participated and contributed based on their fields of expertise. These experts represent a range of disciplines that include adult endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology, health education, mathematics, statistics, psychology, nutrition, exercise physiology, and nursing. This coalition was organized by Diabetes Technology Management, Inc. Among the participants, there was consensus that: 1. protocols assessing the performance of SMBG in noninsulin treated T2DM must provide the SMBG intervention subjects with blood glucose (BG) goals and instructions on how to respond to BG data in randomized controlled trials (RCTs);2. intervention subjects in clinical trials of SMBG-driven interventions must aggressively titrate their therapeutic responses or lifestyle changes in response to hyperglycemia;3. control subjects in clinical trials of SMBG must be isolated from SMBG-driven interventions and not be contaminated by physician experience with study subjects receiving a SMBG intervention;4. the best endpoints to measure in a clinical trial of SMBG in T2DM include delta Hemoglobin A1c levels, hyperglycemic events, hypoglycemic events, time to titrate noninsulin therapy to a maximum necessary dosage, and quality of life indices;5. either individual randomization or cluster randomization may be appropriate methods for separating control subjects from SMBG intervention subjects, provided that precautions are taken to avoid bias and

In this paper we introduce the NTCIR6 Opinion Analysis Pilot Task, information about the Chinese, Japanese, and English data, plans for future opinion analysis tasks at NTCIR, and a brief overview of the evaluation results. This pilot task is a sentence-level opinion identification and polarity detection task run over data from a comparable corpus in three languages: Chinese, English, and Japanese. We have manually annotated documents for this task in each language, producing what we believe to be the first multilingual opinion analysis data set over comparable data. Six participants submitted Chinese system results, three Japanese, and six English for this pilot task. We plan to release the data to the research community, and hope to spur further research into cross-lingual opinion analysis and its use in other NLP tasks. In particular, we look forward to researchers using this data to investigate cross-cultural perspective differences based on automatic sentiment analysis. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

In this paper, we proposed a new approach, called FiVaTech for the problem of Web data extraction. FiVaTech is a page-level data extraction system which deduces the data schema and templates for the input pages generated from a CGI program. FiVaTech uses tree templates to model the generation of dynamic Web pages. FiVaTech can deduce the schema and templates for each individual Deep Web site, which contains either singleton or multiple data records in one Web page. FiVaTech applies tree matching, tree alignment, and mining techniques to achieve the challenging task. The experiments show an encouraging result for the test pages used in many state-of-the-art Web data extraction works. © 2007 IEEE.

As the computer data storage capacity increases and technology of digital imaging progresses rapidly, today we can access and manipulate huge image database on the Internet. How to search and access intelligently on content based image database become an important focus in the field of multimedia research. In this study, a preliminary system of grid-distributed, contextual and semantic based, intelligent information access framework for medical images database was designed to integrate with radiology reports and clinical department information. A prototyping was established with a model of intelligent diagnostic and therapeutic decision support for brain degenerative diseases among radiologist and neurologist. Dementia was the first disease selected for implementation. In the future, the system will extend its spectrum of diseases and more clinical specialties. © 2007 IEEE.

The Okayama muon telescope and the extensive air shower (EAS) array in Large Area Air Shower (LAAS) experiments were used to measure both muon and electron components in EAS events. The average ratio of the number of muon tracks to electron tracks 0.01 ± 0.005 was derived from this analysis, which is consistent with the typical core distance of EAS from the telescope in PeV energies derived from EAS simulation results.

The sidereal anisotropy of cosmic rays with energy in the range of 10 14 – 10 15 eV was obtained by using Large Area Air Show (LAAS) experiments which deployed extensive air shower (EAS) arrays in large part of Japan. The first harmonic amplitude and phase in a function of right ascension axis are ( 0.23 ± 0.04 ) × 10 −2 and 0.4 ± 0.7 hour, respectively, and those of the second harmonics are ( 0.06 ± 0.04 ) × 10 −2 and 7.5 ± 2.6 hour, respectively. The first harmonic amplitude are compared with the diffusive mode of cosmic ray propagation, which predicts the dependence of anisotropy amplitudes on primary cosmic ray rigidities. The exponent value of rigidity dependence of diffusion coefficient is estimated as 0.34 ± 0.01 , in good agreement with Kolmogorov type spectrum of turbulence of galactic magnetic filed. Although a sky map in equatorial coordinates indicates excess and deficit regions above the isotropic expectation, their deviations were consistent with statistical ones, and more statistics are required to point the region and the opening angle of them.

In recent years, technologies have been introduced offering a large amount of computing and networking resources. New applications such as Google AdSense and BitTorrent can profit from the use of these resources. An efficient way of discovering and reserving these resources is by using the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept. SOA can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. This paper presents an architecture that can be used to support end-to-end resource virtualization for Web 2.0 applications and in particular for peer-to-peer applications by using the Service Oriented Architecture concept.
