Sensor networks supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities are emerging as a critically important computer class that enable novel and low cost applications. There are many fundamental problems that sensor networks research will have to address in order to ensure a reasonable degree of cost and system quality. Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. However, selecting of the cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In this paper, in order to deal with this problem we propose a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic. We evaluate the proposed method by simulations and show that proposed system makes a good selection of the cluster head.

The Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. This platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

Algorithm using wavelet and support vector machine (SVM) is developed for improving the performance of speech coding or recognition systems working in car environment. The first step of the proposed algorithm is to apply wavelet-based de-noising method to reduce the in-car background noise of the input speech. Then one can make use of SVM to train an optimized non-linear decision rule involving the subband power, zero- crossing rate, and pitch frequency of the de-noised input speech. By the use of the trained SVM, the proposed algorithm can achieve accurate VAD under in-car noisy environment. Various experimental results carried out on the Aurora speech database show that the proposed SVM-VAD is capable of outperforming to the standard VADs including ITU G.729B and ETSI AMR-NB VAD. Taiwan started to be an 'aging society' from 1993, and the aging process will progress more rapidly due to markedly decreased child birth in recent year. Facing very high old age dependency ratio as 1 to 2 in year 2030 which means every two working age persons (age 15 - 64 years) have to support one elderly people. That would be an enormous burden for every family and society. In this study a U-Care system was developed and implemented in a satellite city region of Taipei metropolitan area in Taiwan, to provide a comprehensive living and health care service network for the elderly. The u-Health research team of National Taiwan University and Hospital collaborate with Cardinal Tien Hospital Young-Ho Branch, 17 primary care doctors and two living care service provider partners to provide integrated and continuous services for elderly people in home, community and institutional setting. © 2007 IEEE.

In order to support multimedia communication, it is necessary to develop routing algorithms which use for routing more than one QoS parameters. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. Also, for admission control of multimedia applications different QoS parameters should be considered. In our previous work, we proposed an intelligent routing and CAC strategy using cooperative agents. The PosEye system is basically a position measurement system which takes images of the reference. The infra-red LEDs which emits IR lights is captured by the CCD and is used as the reference. In this system the absolute positioning and orientation were made with the help of a PosEye. The PosEye is normally fixed on a robot arm or the object which requires orientation of its own position in correspondence to its reference points in the working area. This paper discusses general ideas about reference markers, set-up procedures, and issues behind the sensor. This mainly includes the principles of PosEye sensor, basics of vision and cameras. The paper details the experiments in which results were obtained through the PosEye system with the help of electronics and PosEye camera. In the experimental setup, the connection of PosEye with the electronic application is presented, the usage of PosEye and the robot control system communication with the PosEye system using coordinate system. The working of the PosEye system is observed by taking images on the reference plate and finding the co-ordinates (x, y, z). The manipulation of the obtained images to the robot for a movement is also studied.

Knowledge reduction is one of the most important issues in rough sets theory. Many works are related to connection-degree-based rough sets model to treat incomplete information systems. However, the model is not used to knowledge reduction. In this paper, a connection-degree-based rough sets model is proposed and used to knowledge reduction. Two ways for knowledge reduction are proposed and the relationships between them are shown. A knowledge reduction algorithm is also shown for incomplete information systems. The algorithm is based on elementary discernibility matrix and the significance degree of an attribute. Examples are used to show that the validity of the algorithm.

The mobile cellular systems are expected to support multiple services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). However, the ability of wireless systems to accommodate expected growth of traffic load and broadband services is limited by available radio frequency spectrum. Call admission control (CAC) is one of the resource management functions, which regulates network access to ensure QoS provisioning. However, the decision for CAC is very challenging issue due to user mobility, limited radio spectrum, and multimedia traffic characteristics. To deal with these problems, in this paper, we propose a fuzzy CAC system. We compare the performance of the proposed system with shadow cluster concept (SCC). We evaluate by simulation the performance of the proposed system. The proposed system has a good behavior on deciding the number of accepted connections while keeping the QoS for serving connections.

Working Group 3 at ITiCSE 2007 continued the ongoing work of the Ontology of Computing project. The working group brought several new people into the project and addressed areas of the ontology of particular interest to these participants. In particular, the group worked on the Ontology sections related to History of Computing, Computing Security and Social and Ethical issues. With the intention of applying the ontology to the support of curriculum development in mind, the group also reviewed and discussed proposed means of presenting a visual representation of the ontology. There was also some work on the present structure of the ontology and future possibilities.
