In this paper, we propose a novel gene clustering method named TGmix through integrated analysis on two types of datasets, namely the time-series and two-group microarray datasets. The goal of the proposed method is to discover genes as biomarkers that have similar expression profiles in time-series conditions and are also significantly differentially expressed in two-group conditions. We applied the proposed method to microarray datasets for rat's wound healing experiment, and the genes discovered in the same cluster conform to the analysis goal with related biological functions

Hierarchical Fuzzy Signatures are generalizations of the Vector Valued Fuzzy Set concept introduced in the 1970s. A crucial question in the Fuzzy Signature context is what kinds of aggregations are applicable for combining data with partly different substructures. Our earlier work introduced the Weighted Relevance Aggregation method to enhance the accuracy of the final results of calculations based on Hierarchical Fuzzy Signature Structures. In this paper, we further generalise the weights and the aggregation into a new operator called Weighted Relevance Aggregation Operator (WRAO). WRAO enhances the adaptability of the fuzzy signature model to different applications and simplifies the learning of fuzzy signature models from data. We also show the methodology of learning these aggregation operators from data.

This paper will discuss a method for presenting a surveillance image captured by an active camera such as one that actively tracks a moving subject as an image that is easily understood by an observer. Active camera surveillance images generally have a narrow field of view, and changes in the line-of-sight direction of an automatic camera make it difficult for an observer to intuitively understand the scene. However, enhancement of the observer's ability to comprehend the scene can be anticipated by adding a wide-angle panoramic image to the periphery of the narrow-field observed image and presenting it as an image that has a wider field of view. In order for an observer to understand conditions in a remote location, the observed image and the panoramic image must be integrated with geometric/photometric consistency. The present paper will discuss a method of geometric integration using a fixed-viewpoint camera, and a method of photometric integration by modeling of brightness variation by eigenimage analysis. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

For eventually providing terahertz science with compact and convenient devices, terahertz (1-10 THz) quantum-well photodetectors and quantum-cascade lasers are investigated. The design and projected detector performance are presented together with experimental results for several test devices, all working at photon energies below and around optical phonons. Background limited infrared performance (BLIP) operations are observed for all samples (three in total), designed for different wavelengths. BLIP temperatures of 17, 13, and 12 K are achieved for peak detection frequencies of 9.7 THz (31μm), 5.4 THz(56 μm), and 3.2 THz(93 μm).respectively. A set of THz quantum-cascade lasers with identical device parameters except for doping concentration is studied. The S-doping density for each period varies from 3.2 × 1010 to 4.8 × 1010 cm2. We observe that the lasing threshold current density increases monotonically with doping concentration. Moreover, the measurements for devices with different cavity lengths provide evidence that the free carrier absorption causes the waveguide loss also to increase monotonically. Interestingly the observed maximum lasing temperature is best at a doping density of 3.6 × 1010 cm-2.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) are known as useful tools for identifying malicious attempts over the network. The most essential part to an IDS is the searching engine that inspects every packet through the network. To strictly defend the protectorate, an IDS must be able to inspect packets at line rate and also provide guaranteed performance even under heavy attacks. Therefore, in this paper we propose an efficient string matching algorithm (named ACM) with compact memory as well as high worst-case performance. Using a magic number heuristic based on the Chinese remainder theorem, the proposed ACM significantly reduces the memory requirement without bringing complex processes. Furthermore, the latency of off-chip memory references is drastically reduced. The proposed ACM can be easily implemented in hardware and software. As a result, ACM enables cost-effective and efficient IDSs.

High-throughput generation of new types of relational biological datasets is creating a demand for network-based signal processing and pattern recognition to provide new insights. Such networks are often too large to interpret visually and too complicated to be explained solely based on local topological properties. Just as signal processing and statistical techniques have been used in traditional, sequential-based biological datasets, so too are methodologies needed to automatically discern patterns in the huge, emerging networks. One way to do this is by transforming these very large networks into discernable epitomes, or abstracts, of the original networks. This work presents an approach for doing this via topological compression. Through capturing nodes' global topologies and subsequent compression, a new network epitome can be derived. Here, this is done with an E. Coli gene regulation network, resulting in biological findings that could not be derived from the local topology of the original network.

In this paper, we investigate the properties of lethal genes in E. coli, our model organism. Topological analysis of networks of functional interactions among genes has shown that lethal genes share common local connectivity properties. In this paper, we analyze cellular networks across three domains. We show that a stochastic global topological analysis, via random walks, is more effective at predicting gene lethality than simply looking at local topology using the standard hub-based method. We also introduce the possibility of using metabolic pathways to understand lethal genes, as regulating these pathways is among one of the most important functions of the gene-encoded proteins. Additionally, we analyze lethal genes in terms of the Gene Ontology (GO) and find that the graph forms two highly connected clusters that are each GO enriched for specific terms. We also find that lethal metabolic regulators are extremely enriched. Finally, we provide applications of the work and avenues for future research.

In this research, the authors evaluate the degree to which dancers copy or follow the techniques of a master, or the degree of proficiency, by analyzing movements in traditional Japanese dance. The data used consist of three-dimensional time series for traditional Japanese dance movements acquired using optical motion capture system. In the authors' prior research, three moving coordinate systems which would move according to the translation and rotation of the body were used to extract the portion of the target movement. In this research, the authors consider a moving coordinate system which simultaneously takes into consideration translation, rotation, correction of orientation, and correction of waist tremble. In their prior research, the authors defined indices for movement stability and frequency characteristics as indices to quantitatively represent in an objective fashion the degree of proficiency of a dancer. Separate from this, in the current research the authors define an index with the spectrum component using a Gabor transform and an index for the amount of translation. The authors had a total of five people, a master from a particular dance school and four dance students of different genders and at different experience levels (all the master's students), perform dance experiments. The authors then extracted the target movements, measured the indices using the extraction results, and attempted to evaluate the degree of proficiency based on the proposed indices. Extraction was sufficiently precise, and the authors were able to confirm that the indices represent the differences appearing due to degree of proficiency and gender. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

National institute of information and Communications Technology of Japan (NICT) completed a project on new-generation mobile communications networks for beyond 3G or 4G in March 2006. This paper presents our vision of new-generation mobile communications networks from networking perspective and their capabilities to be offered: fast and large-capacity handover, cross-network handover, cross-device handover, and interworking between real and cyber worlds. Then, Metro Mobile Ring network technology for the first capability, MIRAI architecture for the second and third capabilities, and other works are presented.

This paper presents an efficient fuzzy cognitive modeling which can handle granulation, organisation and causation. This cognitive modeling technique consists of multiple levels where the lowest level includes details required to make a decision or to transfer to the next stage. This fuzzy cognitive modeling will enhance the usability of fuzzy theory in modeling complex systems as well as facilitating complex decision making process based on ill structured or missing information or data.
