Life is priceless, so pre-hospital evaluation and management is important in emergency medical service. To enhance the quality of emergency medical service, the mobile hospital emergency medical system (MHMES) is designed to provide for e-prepared services. This system could improve the communication among the ambulance, the dispatch and mission control center and the emergency department of the hospital via a wireless network, and provide comprehensive service during pre-hospital resuscitation and transportation of the patients. The MHMES consists of three sub-systems located in three sites respectively, dispatch and mission control center, emergency department of hospital and ambulance. It includes electrical map to track the ambulances and transfer patients situation and histories with the hospital to follow the symptom. Therefore, this system would be able to reduce the mortality during transportation and enhance the safety and quality of emergency medical service. It structures an emergency informatics system of National Taiwan University Hospital to provide a application of wireless network in a medical emergency service network.

The purpose of admission control is to support the quality of service (QoS) demands of real time applications via resource reservation. In order to deal with admission control for high-speed networks, in a previous work we proposed a fuzzy based admission control scheme, which is flexible and adaptive and makes an intelligent decision for call acceptance. In the previous work, we considered only two indicators for QoS and congestion control. However, for multimedia applications more QoS and CC parameters should be considered. In this paper, we extend our previous work by proposing two additional schemes, which are integrated in the previous scheme. The new scheme is called fuzzy admission control for multimedia applications (MFAC). In this paper, we introduce the conventional admission control schemes and give some simulation results of their performance. We explain the proposed MFAC scheme and present the design of fuzzy QoS controller (FQC) and Fuzzy congestion controller (FCC). The performance of the new scheme and the comparison with conventional ones is for the future work.

Multiobjective antenna array design using the method of genetic algorithms

A multiobjective stochastic optimization technique is presented for the design of antenna arrays with given radiation pattern specifications. The technique utilizes the method of genetic algorithms and the proper objective functions are selected for the optimized array design. The technique has been implemented for the case where the arrays consist of vertical dipoles. The parameters of the GA include the elements positions, the array voltage excitation coefficients (amplitude and phase) and the radius and length of the dipoles. The array elements can either be arbitrarily placed, forming a non-uniform configuration or they can arange a circular, uniform, dual band array. In the latter case, the array and dipole characteristics are optimized by the GA for dual band operation, while different current coefficients have to be evaluated for each frequency. The presented results demonstrate the effectiveness, the versatility and applicability of the proposed technique.

This paper presents a computer-assisted diagnostic system for mass detection and classification, which performs mass detection on regions of interest followed by the benign-malignant classification on detected masses. In order for mass detection to be effective, a sequence of preprocessing steps are designed to enhance the intensity of a region of interest, remove the noise effects and locate suspicious masses using five texture features generated from the spatial gray level difference matrix (SGLDM) and fractal dimension. Finally, a probabilistic neural network (PNN) coupled with entropic thresholding techniques is developed for mass extraction. Since the shapes of masses are crucial in classification between benignancy and malignancy, four shape features are further generated and joined with the five features previously used in mass detection to be implemented in another PNN for mass classification. To evaluate our designed system a data set collected in the Taichung Veteran General Hospital, Taiwan, R.O.C. was used for performance evaluation. The results are encouraging and have shown promise of our system.

The development of wireless communication technology creates a mobile hospital that provides "e-link" between patients and medical personnel 24 hours a day and seven days a week. In this way, mobile hospital can provide a continuous and comprehensive healthcare for anybody, in any time and anywhere. Such communication pathway is capable and reliable not only in handing large amount of medical data such as vital signs or cardiac rhythm but also in transmitting voice, picture, and video in real time. Based on the information received, medical personnel could make necessary medical decisions and provide care instructions to the patient or the on-site care providers remotely and cost effectively.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) has seriously hit to the worldwide for several months. Without a full understanding of the natural cause of illness and the mode of transmission, precautions are processed by the standard guidelines that lack of extensive system to identify and trace isolated persons, contact history of patients and infected disposals. To shorten the tracking time and increase the accuracy of infection, we introduce in this paper a MHS (mobile healthcare service) system, a platform that uses RFID (radio frequency identification) technologies and mobile devices for positioning and identifying persons and objects both for inside and outside hospital when disease taken place. Also, based on the applications for SARS infection control precautions, this system demonstrates how to receive patient's location and bio-information by using RFID technology for hospital and government to enact real-time infection control measures from the auditing mechanism among isolated patients in households or residential settings. Further, this model shows the possibility to bring medicare service that can become ubiquitous and can cross geographic barriers and enable medical information technology from e-Medicare to m-Medicare for future development in the medical industry.

One of well-known routing protocol for ad hoc networks is zone routing protocol (ZRP). The performance of ZRP is better than other protocols. However, many useless control packets are used resulting in the increase of network load and decrease of network performance. In this paper, we propose a selective border-casting zone routing protocol (SBZRP) to reduce the network load by limiting the number of control packets when the protocol searches for a new route. The performance evaluation via simulations shows that the SBZRP has better performance than ZRP.

In this paper, feature extraction of EEG signals during right and left motor imagery is tried. As the extraction method, directed information analysis, pattern recognition based on AR model, and mixture probability algorithm based on AR model is used. The learning and feature extraction method in pattern recognition are discussed through the experimental studies.
