In this paper we study the following problem: how to divide a cake among the children attending a birthday party such that all the children get the same amount of cake and the same amount of icing. This leads us to the study of the following. A perfect 1/k-partitioning of a convex set S' is a partitioning of S into k convex pieces such that each piece has the same area and of the perimeter of S. We show that for any k, any convex set admits a perfect 1/k-partitioning. Perfect partitionings with additional constraints are also studied. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000

We present results of providing database support to biomedicine via federation of SDB Cooperation/Integration based upon the KEGG GUI for molecular biology. The federation provides a common link to three molecular biology databases. The added value of the federation is freedom from consulting multiple references to ascertain the full set of enzymatic reactions in a metabolic pathway, and the option of selecting multiple queries to submit to the federated SDBs. Each of the SDBs is extensive, but incomplete. The union of the SDBs, implemented transparently by the federation, is more complete. Each SDB provides a different approach to the options available for data presentation and a different set of Web server tools for data analysis. Thus, an important part of the added value of the federation is the cross-fertilization available in the union of the molecular biological content, the presentation of data, and the tools available for analysis.

The ECG inverse problem is aimed to estimate cardiac electrical activity such as epicardial potentials from measured precordial potential distribution. We investigated the accuracy and stability of ECG inverse solution by applying singular value decomposition and proposed a new method to obtain globally and locally valid regularized solution by unified use of the information criterion (minimum description length principle) and Iakovidis method (1992). As a numerical model for computer validation of this method, numerically-modelled human thorax was used and epicardial (heart surface) potential body surface potential mapping was generated by using boundary element method. We applied our method to this numerical model and found our self constraint super resolution method (SCSR) provides both globally and locally improved solution.

This paper discusses how a backup virtual path (VP) between each pair of a source node and a destination node is set up such that when some nodes and links in primary VP's fail, primary VP's are changed to backup VP's rapidly. Then, this paper proposes a multiagent-based method for such rapid restoration from primary VP's to backup VP's. The proposed method consists of the following three steps. The first step enumerates candidates of backup VP between each pair of a source node and a destination node. In the second step, capacities of shared links in backup VP candidates between different pairs of a source node and a destination node are obtained. The last step determines a backup VP with the minimum capacities of shared links between each pair of a source node and a destination node. The proposed method has potentially good adaptability for change of both network resource such as topology and link capacity and resource requirements such as capacities of primary VP and backup VP.

Several segmentation techniques were evaluated for their effectiveness in distinguishing lesion from background in dermatoscopic images of pigmented lesions (moles and melanomas). These included 5 techniques previously used for segmentation of pigmented lesions, and several new techniques based on stabilized inverse diffusion equations (SIDE) and Markov random fields (MRF). Novel multiresolution implementations of the SIDE and MRF algorithms were created for this work. Techniques based on the SIDE and MRF algorithms produced the most accurate segmentations.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.
