Today's markets are characterized by increasing turbulence, which forces industrial companies world wide to become more and more flexible. This flexibility is needed in all levels of industry and especially within production. As the corresponding "enabling technologies" for information and communication in such production systems the internet with connections down to single field devices get into the focus of vendors and end using companies of automation systems |1, 2|. With regard to the steadily growing wish for flexibility software agents and plug&participate technologies are going to play an exceptional role. Unfortunately most of the existing agent-systems does not specifically follow the requirements of industrial automation. Due to the often restricted resources of (especially) field devices the need for agent platforms suitable for limited device environments in this context increases more and more. Here different approaches exist in order to meet the requirements and to satisfy the demand. On the one hand, there exist platforms which are based upon plug&participate technologies, but are not suitable for limited devices. On the other hand, there exist platforms for limited devices, which do not provide common plug&participate capabilities. Hence, there does not exist an agent platform satisfying all requirements at the same time. Therefore, this paper describes such a platform, which is based upon a Jini-like limited device plug&participate technology and thus is suitable also for industrial environments with often limited devices. © 2004 IEEE.

In this paper we present the DES-Chan framework for experimentally-driven research on distributed channel assignment algorithms in wireless mesh networks. The implementation process of channel assignment algorithms is a difficult task for the researcher since common operating systems do not support channel assignment algorithms out of the box. DES-Chan provides a set of common services required by distributed channel assignment algorithms. The modular architecture of DES-Chan allows the extensions with further modules or the modifications of existing ones. As a proof of concept, we present a reference implementation of a distributed greedy channel assignment algorithm. We evaluate its performance in the DES-Testbed, a multi-transceiver wireless mesh network (WMN) with 100 nodes at the Freie Universität Berlin.

Plant diseases are important factors as they result in serious reduction in quality and quantity of agriculture products. Therefore, early detection and diagnosis of these diseases are important. To this end, we propose a deep learning-based approach that automates the process of classifying banana leaves diseases. In particular, we make use of the LeNet architecture as a convolutional neural network to classify image data sets. The preliminary results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach even under challenging conditions such as illumination, complex background, different resolution, size, pose, and orientation of real scene images. © 2017 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). This paper introduces a novel concept for automated navigation and control of a mobile platform. It utilizes an ad-hoc mobile wireless sensor network to provide navigational information to the mobile platform embedded control system. The embedded controller is realized with an ARM9 SOC based single board computer, with real time, multi-thread software implementation using a real time Linux operating system framwork. We have repeatedly tested the automated navigation and control concept on a wheel based mobile platform in an indoor environment, and found the performance meeting our original design goals. ©2008 IEEE.

PFV2: Packet fragmentation with variable size and vigorous mapping in time-sensitive networking

With the rapid advancement of intelligent automobiles, the ever-growing communication data put forward high bandwidth and low latency requirements. To meet these requirements, automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) widely adopt domain-centralized Electrical/Electronic (E/E) architecture. In this architecture, Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is expected to serve as the backbone network because of its high bandwidth and deterministic communication. TSN uses the Gate Control List (GCL) to divide its time length into multiple time slots, and the time intervals of these time slots are non-uniform (equal or unequal). Different flows have varying requirements for time slot sizes. To enhance the acceptance ratio of Time-Triggered (TT) flows through GCL time slot allocation, packet fragmentation (i.e., flow fragmentation) is introduced into TSN in the recent study. The state-of-the-art packet fragmentation solution divides one un-schedulable TT flow into multiple equal-sized packets (i.e., equal-sized time slots). In other words, these fixed-size packets are difficult to be mapped into the time slots with different sizes. This study develops a Packet Fragmentation with Variable-size and Vigorous-mapping (PFV2) technique based on the following three innovations: (1) we implement variable-size packet fragmentation, which iteratively divides the un-schedulable TT flow into smaller packets and then dynamically reschedules these packets; (2) we implement the vigorous mapping solution from packets to time slots by deeply searching for available time slots within the flow’s deadline; and (3) we verify PFV2 based on the LS1028A with Cortex-A72 (i.e., the NXP automotive-grade development board). PFV2 improves the acceptance ratio by up to 20.18% and bandwidth utilization by up to 7.024% compared with the state-of-the-art solution. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are an emerging technology which provides broadband wireless access services. One of the challenges that still faces high performance WMNs is the capacity reduction due to interference of wireless links. In this paper, we address the problem of assigning channels to nodes in WMNs. For this, we introduce the cluster channel assignment (CCA) approach with the objective of reducing network interference to increase the overall network performance. A clustering approach is employed in order to reduce the complexity of channel assignment into local problems within clusters and taking the advantage of the possibility to reuse the channels in different clusters.

Advances in technology scaling increasingly make emerging Chip MultiProcessor (CMP) platforms more susceptible to failures that cause various reliability challenges. In such platforms, error-prone on-chip memories (caches) continue to dominate the chip area. Also, Network-on-Chip (NoC) fabrics are increasingly used to manage the scalability of these architectures. We present a novel solution for efficient implementation of fault-tolerant design of Last-Level Cache (LLC) in CMP architectures. The proposed approach leverages the interconnection network fabric to protect the LLC cache banks against permanent faults in an efficient and scalable way. During an LLC access to a faulty block, the network detects and corrects the faults, returning the fault-free data to the requesting core. Leveraging the NoC interconnection fabric, designers can implement any cache fault-tolerant scheme in an efficient, modular, and scalable manner for emerging multicore/manycore platforms. We propose four different policies for implementing a remapping-based fault-tolerant scheme leveraging the NoC fabric in different settings. The proposed policies enable design trade-offs between NoC traffic (packets sent through the network) and the intrinsic parallelism of these communication mechanisms, allowing designers to tune the system based on design constraints. We perform an extensive design space exploration on NoC benchmarks to demonstrate the usability and efficacy of our approach. In addition, we perform sensitivity analysis to observe the behavior of various policies in reaction to improvements in the NoC architecture. The overheads of leveraging the NoC fabric are minimal: on an 8-core, 16-cache-bank CMP we demonstrate reliable access to LLCs with additional overheads of less than 3% in area and less than 7% in power. © 2014 ACM.

Service Composition refers to the construction of complex services with the help of more primitive and easily executable services or components. With the proliferation of wireless communication and the mobile Internet, the demand for mobile data services has increased. In addition the recent spurt of eservices and m-services has increased the importance of service composition. We envisage service composition to play a crucial role in providing mobile devices access to complex services. The basis for our proposed approach is to virtualize the individual system resources as services that can be described, discovered and dynamically configured at runtime to execute an application. The paper discuss a novel paradigm which integrates mobile devices into the traditional grid, with the capability for composition of services. To accomplish such a global service composition in the new model we propose to add functional layers over the already proposed Anonymous Remote Mobile Cluster Computing model. The idea behind such middleware is to use the available resources efficiently and to hide the complexity inherent in managing heterogeneous services. This paper describes the unique capabilities of the proposed middleware and gives the layered view of the proposed architecture.

How to exchange information between parties in a disaster management system is one of the fundamental challenges to support timely and efficient disaster response and relief. Specifically, the timeliness, scalability, and availability are three desirable features for information exchange. We call the framework to support information exchange with the three features an Open Information Gateway (OIGY). In this paper, we present the challenges of information gateway and the design of the communication protocols and landmark-based service recovery mechanism to support the aforementioned features. The mechanism aims at recovering the real-time publish and subscription services within an affected region. The developed method allows a landmark service node to monitor pub/sub service within a region, rather than the entire pub/sub network. To evaluate the performance of the service-recover mechanism, we measured its transmission and recovery overhead under different number of message brokers in the network. © 2013 WIT Press.

The MANIAC Challenge is a competition for cooperation strategies in wireless ad-hoc networks with the focus on experimental evaluation. We present the results of the MANIAC Challenge and discuss characteristics of real networks such as link instability and mobility, which are often simplified in common network simulators. We introduce our strategy Friendly Clustering that won the Performance Award. Friendly Clustering is based on monitoring the neighbors' forwarding behavior and assessing their willingness to relay future data packets. Further on, we describe the challenges in implementing the strategy for real networks, such as the DES-Testbed at the Freie Universität Berlin and the ad-hoc network of the MANIAC Challenge.
