We present a coupled simulation approach for fluid–structure–acoustic interactions (FSAI) as an example for strongly surface coupled multi-physics problems. In addition to the multi-physics character, FSAI feature multi-scale properties as a further challenge. In our partitioned approach, the problem is split into spatially separated subdomains interacting via coupling surfaces. Within each subdomain, scalable, single-physics solvers are used to solve the respective equation systems. The surface coupling between them is realized with the scalable open-source coupling tool preCICE described in the "Partitioned Fluid–Structure– Acoustics Interaction on distributed Data: Coupling via preCICE". We show how this approach enables the use of existing solvers and present the overall scaling behavior for a three-dimensional test case with a bending tower generating acoustic *** run this simulation with different solvers demonstrating the performance of various solvers and the flexibility of the partitioned approach with the coupling tool preCICE. An efficient and scalable in-situ visualization reducing the amount of data in place at the simulation processors before sending them over the network or to a file system completes the simulation environment. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Due to today's product complexity and variety and a shortening of development cycles, for instance, in the automotive domain, a conventional knowledge representation and management of the various design methods is not reasonable anymore. By acquiring the relevant domain and business knowledge from IT applications, documents and experts and creating ontologies, business rules and queries thereof, domain experts can manage this knowledge independently and thus react faster to the ever-changing development process. Using SemanticWeb technologies, we created a methods ontology that enables domain experts to analyze and compare method meta knowledge, e.g., about physical and virtual CAx methods. Furthermore, this particular domain and business knowledge features interdependencies with the remaining enterprise knowledge, including business processes, organizational aspects and the IT architecture. Therefore, we show concepts for the integration of this method meta knowledge into an enterprise architecture.

Engineering related research, such as research on worst-case execution time, uses experimentation to evaluate ideas. For these experiments we need example programs. Furthermore, to make the research experimentation repeatable those programs shall be made publicly available. We collected open-source programs, adapted them to a common coding style, and provide the collection in open-source. The benchmark collection is called TACLeBench and is available from GitHub in version 1.9 at the publication date of this paper. The wide adoption of smart devices has stimulated a fast shift of security-critical data from desktop to mobile devices. However, recurrent device theft and loss expose mobile devices to various security threats and even physical attacks. This paper presents TinMan, a system that protects confidential data such as web site password and credit card number (we use the term cor to represent these data, which is short for Confidential Record) from being leaked or abused even under device theft. TinMan separates accesses of cor from the rest of the functionalities of an app, by introducing a trusted node to store cor and offloading any code from a mobile device to the trusted node to access cor. This completely eliminates the exposure of cor on the mobile devices. The key challenges to TinMan include deciding when and how to efficiently and transparently offload execution;Tin-Man addresses these challenges with security-oriented offloading with a low-overhead tainting scheme called asymmetric tainting to track accesses to cor to trigger offloading, as well as transparent SSL session injection and TCP payload replacement to offload accesses to cor. We have implemented a prototype of TinMan based on Android and demonstrated how TinMan protects the information of user's bank account and credit card number without modifying the apps. Evaluation results also show that TinMan incurs only a small amount of performance and power overhead. Copyright © 2015 ACM.

High quality video streaming for mobile users is difficult to achieve in some areas of the world due to poor broadband capacity and sparse network coverage. We propose a bandwidth-sharing scheme to allow users with limited uplink bandwidth to borrow idle bandwidth from nearby access points and provide these users the opportunity to experience higher quality video than what their own bandwidth could normally support. We developed a Linux kernel implementation of a multipath less-than-best-effort (MP-LBE) protocol for bandwidth scavenging and demonstrated, through testbed experiments, that video quality may be improved through bandwidth sharing. This may bring us closer to the 'video everywhere' vision even as incremental upgrades are made on broadband Internet infrastructure. © 2015 IEEE.

Large-scale graph-structured computation usually exhibits iterative and convergence-oriented computing nature, where input data is computed iteratively until a convergence condition is reached. Such features have led to the development of two different computation modes for graph-structured programs, namely synchronous (Sync) and asynchronous (Async) modes. Unfortunately, there is currently no in-depth study on their execution properties and thus programmers have to manually choose a mode, either requiring a deep understanding of underlying graph engines, or suffering from suboptimal performance. This paper makes the first comprehensive characterization on the performance of the two modes on a set of typical graph-parallel applications. Our study shows that the performance of the two modes varies significantly with different graph algorithms, partitioning methods, execution stages, input graphs and cluster scales, and no single mode consistently outperforms the other. To this end, this paper proposes Hsync, a hybrid graph computation mode that adaptively switches a graph-parallel program between the two modes for optimal performance. Hsync constantly collects execution statistics on-the-fly and leverages a set of heuristics to predict future performance and determine when a mode switch could be profitable. We have built online sampling and offline profiling approaches combined with a set of heuristics to accurately predicting future performance in the two modes. A prototype called PowerSwitch has been built based on PowerGraph, a state-of-the-art distributed graph-parallel system, to support adaptive execution of graph algorithms. On a 48-node EC2-like cluster, PowerSwitch consistently outperforms the best of both modes, with a speedup ranging from 9% to 73% due to timely switch between two modes. Copyright 2015 ACM.

Assessing the benefits of search-based approaches when designing self-adaptive systems: a controlled experiment

The well-orchestrated use of distilled experience, domain-specific knowledge, and well-informed trade-off decisions is imperative if we are to design effective architectures for complex software-intensive systems. In particular, designing modern self-adaptive systems requires intricate decision-making over a remarkably complex problem space and a vast array of solution mechanisms. Nowadays, a large number of approaches tackle the issue of endowing software systems with self-adaptive behavior from different perspectives and under diverse assumptions, making it harder for architects to make judicious decisions about design alternatives and quality attributes trade-offs. It has currently been claimed that search-based software design approaches may improve the quality of resulting artifacts and the productivity of design processes, as a consequence of promoting a more comprehensive and systematic representation of design knowledge and preventing design bias and false intuition. To the best of our knowledge, no empirical studies have been performed to provide sound evidence of such claim in the self-adaptive systems domain. This paper reports the results of a quasi-experiment performed with 24 students of a graduate program in distributed and Ubiquitous Computing. The experiment evaluated the design of self-adaptive systems using a search-based approach proposed by us, in contrast to the use of a non-automated approach based on architectural styles catalogs. The goal was to investigate to which extent the adoption of search-based design approaches impacts on the effectiveness and complexity of resulting architectures. In addition, we also analyzed the approach’s potential for leveraging the acquisition of distilled design knowledge. Our findings show that search-based approaches can improve the effectiveness of resulting self-adaptive systems architectures and reduce their design complexity. We present a novel concept for a wake-up system based ultra-low power communication protocol for sensor networks. The main application field is monitoring contacts and even tracks of bats in the wild. Our sensor nodes can weigh at most 2g out of which 1g remains for the battery. We investigate a novel communication protocol design applicable to these systems and also showing great potentials for other ultralow power sensor networks. In particular, we investigate the bat to ground communication by combining duty cycling with a multistage wake-up receiver. We employ Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) modulated signals that allow to accurately localize and track the bats while transmitting data in parallel. In a first step, we evaluated the conceptual design using a software-defined radio system to demonstrate the feasibility of the protocol design.

Automated car following, or platooning, is a promising Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) application which has the potential of reducing traffic jams, improving safety, and decreasing fuel consumption by forming groups of vehicles which autonomously follow a common leader. The application works by sharing vehicles' data through high frequency periodic beaconing which, due to channel congestion, might not work in highly dense scenarios. To address this issue, in this paper we propose a dynamic approach called Jerk Beaconing which exploits vehicle dynamics to share data only when needed. The results, compared to a commonly assumed 10 Hz beaconing, show huge benefits in term of network resource saving. Moreover, our approach outperforms static beaconing in terms of safety as well, as it is able to keep inter-vehicle distance closer to the desired gap even in highly demanding scenarios.
