Wireless ad-hoc networks are typically deployed in a decentralized way, without an authority that determines the location of nodes or the time they join the network. Additionally, existing nodes may fail during network lifetime. Consequently, the geographical span (area) of the network is irregular and unknown. However, if known, this information can be used to improve efficiency of many wireless applications; in some existing applications this information is necessary for their operation in the real use cases. For this purpose, we propose a distributed algorithm that determines the geographical network area. It is the first algorithm that simultaneously discovers network border, approximates the network area with a data structure of a constant size, and disseminates this information to all network nodes. Our algorithm uses only the nodes' local information, has a constant computational complexity and is resilient to link unreliability. The algorithm is evaluated by simulation on realistic network topologies of different sizes. The simulations demonstrate that the algorithm has high accuracy in its estimation of the network area, scales well with the number of nodes, and that it creates a low communication overhead.

Soft error has become a major adverse effect in CMOS based electronic systems. Mitigating soft error requires enhancing the underlying system with error recovery functionality, which typically leads to considerable design cost overhead, in terms of performance, power and area. For embedded systems, where stringent design constraints apply, such cost must be properly bounded. In this paper, we propose a HW/SW methodology DHASER, which enables efficient error recovery functionality for embedded ASIP-based multi-core systems. DHASER consists of three main parts: task level correctness (TLC) analysis, TLC-based processor/core customization, and runtime reliability-aware task management mechanism. It enables each individual ASIP-based processing core to dynamically adapt its specific error recovery functionality according to the corresponding task's characteristics (i.e., soft error vulnerability and execution time deadline). The goal is to optimize the overall system reliability while considering performance/throughput. The experimental results have shown that DHASER can significantly improve the reliability of the system, with little cost overhead, in comparison to the state-of-art counterparts.

Marine phenomena such as algal blooms can be detected using in situ measurements onboard autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), but understanding plankton ecology and community structure requires retrieval and analysis of water specimens. This process requires shipboard or manual sample collection, followed by onshore lab analysis which is time-consuming. Better understanding of the relationship between the observable environmental features and organism abundance would allow more precisely targeted sampling and thereby save time. In this work, we present an approach to learn and improve models that predict this relationship. Coupled with recent advances in AUV technology allowing selective retrieval of water samples, this constitutes a new paradigm in biological sampling. We use organism abundance models along with spatial models of environmental features learned immediately after AUV deployments to compute spatial distributions of organisms in the coastal ocean purely from in situ AUV data. We use Gaussian process regression along with the unscented transform to fuse the two models, obtaining both the mean and variance of the organism abundance estimates. The uncertainty in organism abundance predictions is used in a sampling strategy to selectively acquire new water specimens that improves the organism abundance models. Simulation results are presented demonstrating the advantage of performing hierarchical probabilistic regression. After the validation through simulation, we show predictions of organism abundance from models learned on lab-analyzed water sample data, and AUV survey data.

In this paper, we proposed an optimized real-time hybrid cooperative multi-camera tracking system for large-scale au-tomate surveillance based on embedded smart cameras including stationary cameras and moving pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) cameras embedded with TI DSP TMS320DM6446 for intelligent visual analysis. Firstly, the overlapping areas and projection relations between adjacent cameras' field of view (FOV) is calculated. Based on the relations of FOV ob-tained and tracking information of each single camera, a homography based target handover procedure is done for long-term multi-camera tracking. After that, we fully implemented the tracking system on the embedded platform de-veloped by our group. Finally, to reduce the huge computational complexity, a novel hierarchical optimization method is proposed. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness and real-time efficiency in dynamic real-world environ-ments and the computational burden is significantly reduced by 98.84%. Our results demonstrate that our proposed sys-tem is capable of tracking targets effectively and achieve large-scale surveillance with clear detailed close-up visual features capturing and recording in dynamic real-life environments.

We present VISA: a novel Variation-aware Instruction Set Architecture synthesis approach that makes effective use of process variation from both software and hardware points of view. To achieve an efficient speedup, VISA selects custom instructions based on statistical static timing analysis (SSTA) for aggressive clocking. Furthermore, with minimum performance overhead, VISA dynamically detects and corrects timing faults resulting from aggressive clocking of the underlying processor. This hybrid software/hardware approach generates significant speedup without degrading the yield. Our experimental results on commonly used ISA synthesis benchmarks demonstrate that VISA achieves significant performance improvement compared with a traditional deterministic worst case-based approach (up to 78.0%) and an existing SSTA-based approach (up to 49.4%).

Simulation is the state-of-the-art analysis technique for distributed thermal management schemes. Due to the numerous parameters involved and the distributed nature of these schemes, such non-exhaustive verification may fail to catch functional bugs in the algorithm or may report misleading performance characteristics. To overcome these limitations, we propose a methodology to perform formal verification of distributed dynamic thermal management for many-core systems. The proposed methodology is based on the SPIN model checker and the Lamport timestamps algorithm. Our methodology allows specification and verification of both functional and timing properties in a distributed many-core system. In order to illustrate the applicability and benefits of our methodology, we perform a case study on a state-of-the-art agent-based distributed thermal management scheme.

We introduce a linear measurement-based method for interference estimation in wireless mesh networks. The approach is based on measuring the channel occupancy and requires only O(n) measurements for a network with n nodes, thus making it suitable for large network deployments. We show, how we utilize the carrier sensing mechanism of commodity IEEE 802.11 hardware to measure the channel occupancy. Based on the measurements, we develop the Channel Occupancy Interference Model (COIM). The model is validated in the DES-Testbed, a wireless mesh network with 128 multi-radio network nodes at the Freie Universität Berlin. The validation shows, that the model is capable of predicting interfering nodes in the communication and also in the interference range. Additionally, our evaluation shows that the often used 2-hop interference model is too pessimistic for indoor network deployments, about 60% of the 2-hop neighbors are not interferers in our set-up. © 2012 IEEE.

Many of earlier attempts on mobile cloud integrations aim on increasing storage capacity of mobile devices, rather than its computation capacity. Traditional distributed computing model relies on static and reliable network connections to share workload among collaborative devices. The researches on pervasive and ubiquitous computing community enable collaborative computation to be conducted on connected computers. Similarly, it is limited to predefined computation services including predefined services and computation platforms. The computation resources in modern computation environment are heterogeneous and evolve over time. The aforementioned computation models do not make good use of such resources. We design and implement an extended OpenCL framework to federate the computation resources of mobile devices with cloud service so as to share its workload and shorten application response times. A virtual cloud core is attached to OpenCL context and can unify the computation between mobile devices and cloud services. The framework does not blindly off-load computation but take into account network capacity and load on connected servers so as to effectively share the load. It also allows a computation request to be conducted either on CPU on mobile device or GPU on connected servers. Our experiments show that the response time can be improved for up to 25 times with modern wireless network connection.

In this paper, we propose few new quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QOSTBCs) with three time slots for two transmit antennas. These codes can be decoded using ML detection. Proposed codes provides better bit error rate (BER) performance than one of the existing QOSTBCs with three time slots and two transmit antennas. All Proposed codes give nearly same performance.
