Non-invasive brain stimulation-based sleep stage classification using transcranial infrared based electrocardiogram

Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as transcranial infrared (tNIR) stimulation, offer promising advancements in sleep monitoring and regulation. To enhance sleep stage classification without relying on traditional polysomnography (PSG) systems, we propose a novel approach integrating single-channel electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, heart rate variability (HRV) features, and tNIR stimulation. The maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) is applied for multi-resolution analysis of ECG signals, followed by peak information extraction. Based on the first-order deviation of peak positions, multi-dimensional HRV features are extracted. To identify HRV features strongly associated with different sleep stages, we introduce a feature selection method combining the ReliefF algorithm and Gini index. The selected features are then processed using the INFO-ABC Logit Boost method to establish correlations between HRV dynamics and sleep stages. Experimental results on publicly available datasets demonstrate that the proposed model achieves an overall accuracy of 83.67%, a precision of 82.59%, a Kappa coefficient of 77.94%, and an F1-score of 82.97%. Compared with conventional sleep staging methods, our approach enhances sleep quality assessment and facilitates real-time, non-invasive monitoring in home and mobile healthcare settings, leveraging the potential of tNIR-based NIBS for sleep modulation. © 2025 The Author(s)

A Chance Constrained Optimal Reserve Scheduling Approach for Economic Dispatch Considering Wind Penetration

The volatile wind power generation brings a full spectrum of problems to power system operation and management, ranging from transient system frequency fluctuation to steady state supply and demand balancing issue. In this paper, a novel wind integrated power system day-ahead economic dispatch model, with the consideration of generation and reserve cost is modelled and investigated. The proposed problem is first formulated as a chance constrained stochastic nonlinear programming U+0028 CCSNLP U+0029, and then transformed into a deterministic nonlinear programming U+0028 NLP U+0029. To tackle this NLP problem, a three-stage framework consists of particle swarm optimization U+0028 PSO U+0029, sequential quadratic programming U+0028 SQP U+0029 and Monte Carlo simulation U+0028 MCS U+0029 is proposed. The PSO is employed to heuristically search the line power flow limits, which are used by the SQP as constraints to solve the NLP problem. Then the solution from SQP is verified on benchmark system by using MCS. Finally, the verified results are feedback to the PSO as fitness value to update the particles. Simulation study on IEEE 30-bus system with wind power penetration is carried out, and the results demonstrate that the proposed dispatch model could be effectively solved by the proposed three-stage approach. © 2017 Chinese Association of Automation.

Privacy is an essential topic in (social) robotics and becomes even more important when considering interactive and autonomous robots within the domestic environment. Robots will collect a lot of personal and sensitive information about the users and their environment. Thereby, privacy does consider the topic of (cyber-)security and the protection of information against misuse by involved service providers. So far, the main focus relies on theoretical concepts to propose privacy principles for robots. This article provides a privacy framework as a feasible approach to consider security and privacy issues as a basis. Thereby, the proposed privacy framework is put in the context of a user-centered design approach to highlight the correlation between the design process steps and the steps of the privacy framework. Furthermore, this article introduces feasible privacy methodologies for privacy-enhancing development to simplify the risk assessment and meet the privacy principles. Even though user participation plays an essential role in robot development, this is not the focus of this article. The self-protecting multipath (SPM) is a simple protection switching mechanism that can be implemented, e.g., by MPLS. We present a linear program to optimize the SPM load balancing parameters for network dimensioning. Our study shows that the SPM is a very efficient mechanism in the sense that it requires only little backup capacity since it outperforms the p-cycle approach and the shortest path rerouting by far. The investigation of the computation time and the memory consumption recommends the Simplex method as an LP solver rather than an interior point method (IPM). The computation time of the program depends mainly on the number of links in the network and it is well feasible for small and and medium size networks. For large networks, however, fast heuristics are required. © 2006 IEEE.

The Java messaging service (JMS) is a means to organize communication among distributed applications according to the publish/subscribe principle. If the subscribers install filter rules on the JMS server, JMS can be used as a message routing platform, but it is not clear whether its message throughput is sufficiently high to support large-scale systems. We perform measurements for the FioranoMQ JMS server and derive a simple model for its message processing time that takes message filters and the message replication grade into account. Then, we analyze the JMS server capacity and the message waiting time for various application scenarios. We show that the message waiting time is not an issue as long as the server throughput is sufficiently high. Finally, we assess the capacity of two different distributed JMS architectures whose objective is to increase the capacity of the JMS beyond the limit of a single server. © 2006 IEEE.

Since testing is inherently incomplete, test selection has vital importance. Coverage measures evaluate the quality of a test suite and help the tester select test cases with maximal impact at minimum cost. Existing coverage criteria for test suites are usually defined in terms of syntactic characteristics of the implementation under test or its specification. Typical black-box coverage metrics are state and transition coverage of the specification. White-box testing often considers statement, condition and path coverage. A disadvantage of this syntactic approach is that different coverage figures are assigned to systems that are behaviorally equivalent, but syntactically different. Moreover, those coverage metrics do not take into account that certain failures are more severe than others, and that more testing effort should be devoted to uncover the most important bugs, while less critical system parts can be tested less thoroughly. This paper introduces a semantic approach to black box test coverage. Our starting point is a weighted fault model (or WFM), which augments a specification by assigning a weight to each error that may occur in an implementation. We define a framework to express coverage measures that express how well a test suite covers such a specification, taking into account the error weight. Since our notions are semantic, they are insensitive to replacing a specification by one with equivalent behaviour. We present several algorithms that, given a certain minimality criterion, compute a minimal test suite with maximal coverage. These algorithms work on a syntactic representation of WFMs as fault automata. They are based on existing and novel optimization problems. Finally, we illustrate our approach by analyzing and comparing a number of test suites for a chat protocol. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The Java messaging service (JMS) is a middleware-oriented messaging technology working according to the publish/subscribe principle. If subscribers install filter rules on the JMS server, JMS can be used as a message routing platform, but it is not clear whether its message throughput is sufficiently high to support large-scale systems. In this paper we investigate the capacity of the Websphere Message Queue JMS server. In contrast to other studies, we focus on the message throughput in the presence of filters and show that filtering reduces the performance significantly. We also present a model that describes the service time for a single message depending on the number of installed filters and validate it by measurements. This model helps to calculate the system throughput for specific application scenarios. © 2006 IEEE.

In the current era of technology, the Internet and web technologies become the center source of information. Due to the huge amount of contents, one of the main challenges of modern information technology is aimed at how to reduce and manage information in a structured way with mobilizing users to the similar kind of relevant information. So, any intelligent system should be able to understand people's interest about a particular type of information and automatically mobilize him to the similar kind of available information sources. The idea of high level Activity Streams along with its standardized format can play a vital role to solve this problem in the broader context. This paper introduces a novel system called CoASGen (Consolidation and Activity Streams Generator) which is able to automatically generate high level Activity Streams after aggregating and consolidating from different independent systems (e.g. in a software company context: version management system, wikis, bug trackers etc.). It retrieves life time information as heterogeneous web feed by sensing user activities from those independent systems and then it transforms several similar types of atomic activities into high level Activity Streams using semantic technologies along with its specific standardized format. Finally, it shows these high level Activity Streams to the user interface which is able to automatically motivate users to find relevant information easily without either missing any data or losing valuable time. This system solves the problem "data silos" by reducing and managing information in a structured way. © 2011 IEEE.

In the last decade, several large-scale wireless sensor networks have been deployed to monitor a variety of environments. The declarative nature of the database approach for accessing sensor data has gained great popularity because of both its simplicity and its energy-efficient implementation. At the same time another declarative abstraction made its way into mainstream sensor network deployments: user-defined groups of nodes. By restricting the set of nodes that participate in a task to such a group, the overall network lifetime can be prolonged. It is straightforward to see that integrating these two approaches, that is, restricting a query's scope to a group of sensor nodes, is beneficial. In this work we explore the integration of two such database and scoping technologies: TikiDB, a modern reincarnation of a sensor network query processor, and Scopes, a network-wide grouping mechanism. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The development of web services and especially semantic web services is a tremendous task for people who are not familiar with all language constructs. Especially with the growing mass of several semantic web service approaches a language-independent service development is needed. This gap can be filled by using model-driven software development. Therefore, in this paper we introduce a meta-model for semantic web services and show the benefits of automatic code generation on the basis of a small example.
