As computer systems become increasingly internetworked, Distributed Real-time Embedded (DRE) software is becoming increasingly common and important, a challenging problem faced by researchers and developers of DRE software is how to devise and implement a method that can effectively analyze requirements in varying operational conditions. In this paper, a Distributed Real-time Embedded net (DREN) is proposed as software design specification modeling tool. The basic tasks, function module and communication process are modeled by using DREN, thus forming the entire application by making use of Petri net's synthesis operation. Time Reachability Graph is adopted to analyze the correctness of DRENmodel, the basic properties of DRE system are also considered. Finally, a specific example is given to simulate the analytical process, the results show that the method can be a good solution to analyze DRE software. © 2010 IEEE.

Service composition is an effective way to achieve value-added service, which has found wide application in software system. Fault handling is critical to achieve high reliability for these applications. However, the existing service composition methods seldom consider services' fault handling, which results in high risk of runtime failure. This paper proposes a formal aspect-oriented approach to designing and analyzing fault of service composition. The underlying formalism is Petri net and its corresponding modeling method. The fault handling process is encapsulated into aspect net and base net, and Petri net is used to model the core concerns and crosscutting concerns, the weaving mechanism systematically integrates these schemas into a complete service composition model. Based on the model, the related theories of Petri net help prove the correctness of fault handling. Finally, an Export Service and simulation results show that our method can ensure the high reliability and design quantity of service composition. © 2010 IEEE.

Service composition is an important means for integrating the individual Web services for creating new value added systems that satisfy complex demands. Since, Web services exist in the heterogeneous environments on the Internet, study on how to guarantee the reliability of service composition in a distributed, dynamic and complex environment becomes more and more important. This paper proposes a service composition net(SCN) and fault-tolerant strategy to improve the reliability of service composition. The strategy consists of static strategy, dynamic strategy and exception handling mechanism, which can be used to dynamically adjust component service for achieving good reliability as well as good overall performance. SCN is adopted to model different components of service composition. The fault detection and fault recovery mechanisms are also considered. Based on the constructed model, theories of Petri nets help prove the consistency of processing states and the effectiveness of the strategy. A case study of Export Service illustrates the feasibility of proposed method. © 2010 IEEE.

Although biometrics technology has progressed substantially, its performance is still to be improved for real applications. This paper aims to improve the accuracy of personal identification, when only single sample is registered as template, by integrating multiple hand-based biometrics. To make fusion much easier, the same feature, so called fusion code, and decision level fusion strategy are used. Two fusion cases, face & palmprint and FKP & palmprint were taken as examples to verify the effectiveness. Experimental results show that much better performance than single modal biometrics has been achieved. ©2010 IEEE.

Business Processing Execution Language (BPEL) and BPEL for People (BPEL4People) are two web services orchestration languages for composing web services. To describe formally their semantics, we introduce the πit-calculus, a new variant of the π-calculus, in this paper. The good feature of the πit-calculus is that its execution can be interrupted and can handle timing events as well. We provide both syntax and semantics of the πit-calculus and define a strong bisimulation relation that specifies when two processes can be considered as the same. With the new calculus, we then model the activities of BPEL and BPEL4People, and give their precise semantics. Our formal framework may facilitate the reliability and consistency analysis in a BPEL or BPEL4People design process. © 2010 IEEE.

In previous work, we propose several mechanisms for distributed SWS publication and discovery. As same as some other applications of Semantic Web, they require users to provide concepts which are defined in domain ontology. However, users usually can not give an exact concept defined in ontology for a word in an open environment. For the reason, we propose a distributed ontology publication approach, through which we can publish ontology to P2P network, so that for a "word" user can find the ontologies that the "word" is defined in. Accordingly, a user can easily select an appropriate ontology to represent a concept for the "word". Then we apply the approach to our previous work to aid users to discover Web Service. With the testing work, the approach proves to be practical and effective approach to ontology publication and discovery. ©2010 IEEE.

As one of the main purposes, Semantic Web Services (SWS) is proposed to ensure automatic service discovery. However, an effective and dedicated semantic registry for SWS discovery is still desired. Therefore, we propose a mechanism and implement it as prototype for SWS discovery. In the paper, first, we discuss the architecture of the mechanism and its properties as a prototype. Next, design an SWS Model Ontology to store the published SWS. Then, we present an algorithm for SWS discovery in detail. Finally, test the prototype with OWLS-TC3 and point out its highlighted merits. As a result, the mechanism proves to be a weight-light and effective method for SWS discovery. © 2010 IEEE.

Semantic Web Services (SWS) is proposed to ensure Web Service core missions automation, nevertheless, a dedicated Web Service discovery technology based on SWS is desired currently. For this reason, we propose an effective SWS matching algorithm to achieve service discovery based on semantics. In the paper, we first refine core properties and requirements to apply subsumption relation to involved SWS matching method, which is based on the semantic information of service's inputs and outputs. Then, we discuss a feasible service semantic matching algorithm in detail. Next, we implement and test it in related SWS registry. Finally, we point out its main properties. In fact, the algorithm proves to fully satisfy our expectations and be practical and feasible. © 2010 IEEE.

A novel objective quality for image fusion based on structural similarity and visual attention mechanism (VAM) is presented. By giving higher weight to the salient areas in the input images, the quality measure can estimate how much visual meaningful information is preserved in the fused image. The correlation analysis between objective measure and subjective evaluation showed that our measures are more consistent with human subjective evaluation. ©2010 IEEE.

Nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) can provide flexible multiresolution, anisotropy, and directional expansion for images. Compared with the original contourlet transform, it is shift-invariant and can overcome the pseudogibbs phenomena around singularities. Fuzzy logic is an efficient intelligent method to handle uncertain information. In this paper, a novel image fusion algorithm is proposed based on the NSCT and fuzzy logic. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method can improve subjective and objective results compared to some other fusion approaches. ©2010 IEEE.
