Although biometrics technology has progressed substantially, its performance is still to be improved for real applications. This paper aims to improve the accuracy of personal identification, when only single sample is registered as template, by integrating multiple hand-based biometrics. To make fusion much easier, the same feature, so called fusion code, and decision level fusion strategy are used. Two fusion cases, face & palmprint and FKP & palmprint were taken as examples to verify the effectiveness. Experimental results show that much better performance than single modal biometrics has been achieved.

The hybrid minimum principle (HMP) gives necessary conditions to be satisfied for optimal solutions of a hybrid dynamical system. In particular, the HMP accounts for autonomous switching between discrete states that occurs whenever the trajectory hits switching manifolds. In this paper, the existing HMP is extended for hybrid systems with partitioned state space to provide necessary conditions for optimal trajectories that pass through an intersection of switching manifolds. This extension is especially useful for the numerical solution of hybrid optimal control problems as it allows for algorithms with significant reduction of computational complexity. Algorithms based on previous versions of the HMP solve separate optimal control problems for each possible sequence of discrete states. The extension enables us to consider the optimal sequence as subject of optimal control that is varied and finally determined during a single optimization run. A first numerical result illustrates the effectiveness of an algorithm based on the extended HMP.

A novel objective quality for image fusion based on structural similarity and visual attention mechanism (VAM) is presented. By giving higher weight to the salient areas in the input images, the quality measure can estimate how much visual meaningful information is preserved in the fused image. The correlation analysis between objective measure and subjective evaluation showed that our measures are more consistent with human subjective evaluation.

Nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) can provide flexible multiresolution, anisotropy, and directional expansion for images. Compared with the original contourlet transform, it is shift-invariant and can overcome the pseudo-gibbs phenomena around singularities. Fuzzy logic is an efficient intelligent method to handle uncertain information. In this paper, a novel image fusion algorithm is proposed based on the NSCT and fuzzy logic. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method can improve subjective and objective results compared to some other fusion approaches.

Effective and meaningful visualization techniques are quite important for multidimensional DNA microarray gene expression data analysis. Elucidating the cluster properties of these multidimensional data are often complex. Patterns, hypotheses on the relationships, and ultimately of the function of the gene can be analyzed and visualized by non-linear reduction of the multidimensional data to a lower dimension. In this paper, an improved SOM visualization technique named Improved Side Intensity Modulated (ISIM) Self-Organizing Map (SOM) has been proposed and compared with other SOM based visualization techniques. An algorithm for hybrid optimal control is proposed that varies the discrete state sequence based on gradient information during the search for an optimal trajectory. The algorithm is developed for hybrid systems with partitioned state space. It uses a version of the hybrid minimum principle that allows optimal trajectories to pass through intersections of switching manifolds, which enables the algorithm to vary the sequence. Consequently, the combinatorial complexity of former algorithms can be avoided, since not each possible sequence has to be investigated separately anymore. The convergence of the algorithm is proven and a numerical example demonstrates the efficiency of the algorithm.

Recent technological advancements in the field of nanotechnology have increased the computation power of the wireless nodes while adhering to the energy constraints. This has made the use of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), more widespread, used in applications such as area monitoring, industrial monitoring, vehicle detection or military monitoring. Sensor nodes have made it possible to collect data even in hostile environments, but because of the severe security and energy constraints faced by sensor networks, their deployment on a large scale is still a tricky job. A secure energy efficient routing algorithm is thus the need of the hour. SPIN, Sensor Protocol for information via Negotiation, is one of the widely used energy efficient routing protocol in WSNs that completely ignores the security aspect. This paper involves proposing an alternate routing protocol, MS-SPIN, which incorporates the best features of SPIN while also addressing the security issue. The implementation of MS-SPIN in NS2 has shown that, for a larger number of nodes, its energy performance characteristics are comparable to those of SPIN while providing security features.

An associative memory (AM) system is proposed to realize incremental learning and temporal sequence learning. The proposed system is constructed with three layer networks: The input layer inputs key vectors, response vectors, and the associative relation between vectors. The memory layer stores input vectors incrementally to corresponding classes. The associative layer builds associative relations between classes. The proposed method can incrementally learn key vectors and response vectors; store and recall both static information and temporal sequence information; and recall information from incomplete or noise-polluted inputs. Experiments using binary data, real-value data, and temporal sequences show that the proposed method works well.

The reversible gates, attracting people's attention increasingly, have been widely used in low-power CMOS design, optical computing and quantum computing. This paper introduces one 2*2 reversible gate named NLG gate, then designs a novel four-bit reversible numerical comparator circuit based on it. The character of NLG gate is that only when both of the inputs are the same, the value of the second output is 1. Since the proposed work is explored for the first time ever in literature, the contribution of this paper will create a new thread of research in the area of reversible logic circuit.
