The analysis and verification of security protocols is an important field in the security of computer nowadays. Model checking technique to the analysis of security protocols has proved remarkably successful, which involves three parts: modeling of system behaviors, description of system properties and system verification. Modeling of system behaviors is a highly challenging task because of its complexity, especially modeling of intruder capability. A general method is proposed to construct a Promela model of the cryptographic protocol, and make use of this way to model the Helsinki protocol. The Promela model of Helsinki protocol is automatically verified by model checker Spin and an attack to Helsinki protocol has successfully been found. Experimental result shows the verification validity via message sequence chart. The general method may become a good guideline for verifying similar cryptographic protocols

In this paper, circuit design of an arithmetic module applied to cryptography - modulo multiplicative inverse is presented and implemented using FPGA hardware technology. This modular arithmetic function contains iterative computations of division, multiplication and accumulation with variable loop times. Besides standard HDL programming and schematic input, Simulink-to-FPGA has been tried as a different design flow. Experimental results are compared between different design methods with discussion of their pros and cons

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new approach which describes an automatic transformation process of electronic flat documents (HTML document for example), into reusable learning objects. Thus, the transformed content can be integrated, within management learning system. Our methodology proposes, firstly, a syntactical transformation of a flat electronic document into well-structured document. It tends secondly, to perform a semantic categorization of each piece of the content into an equivalent type of reusable learning object (Ajami, 2004). H.264 is the new multimedia compression standard developed by VCEG and MPEG. In order to maximize the compression performance, H.264 adopts RDO mode decision techniques at the cost of very remarkable computational complexity. To reduce encoder complexity associated with the intra-prediction mode selection, in this paper, a fast intra prediction mode selection scheme is proposed. It is based on three improvement parts, including improvement of the intra prediction algorithm structure, fast selection between intra 4×4 block mode and intra 16×16 block mode, and the fast 4×4 luma block mode selection based on the luma similarity between reference pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme outperforms Pan's method, and compared with the test model JM8.6 provided by JVT, the proposed scheme reduces 83.10% coding time for intra frames and 50.94% coding time for all the frames while maintaining the PSNR and bit rate. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The detection of failures is a fundamental issue for fault tolerance in distributed systems. Recently, many people have come to realize that failure detection ought to be provided as some form of generic service, similar to IP address lookup. However, this has not been successful so far; one of the reasons being the fact that classical failure detectors were not designed to satisfy several application requirements simultaneously. More specifically, traditional implementations of failure detectors are often tuned for running over local networks and fail to address some important problems found in wide-area distributed systems with a large number of monitored components. In this paper, we study the quality of service (QoS) of failure detectors. We first present a novel failure detector scheme combined with control theory that can help in solving or optimizing some problems. Furthermore, this paper discusses the design and analysis of implementing a scalable failure detection service for such large wide-area distributed systems considering dynamically adjusting the heartbeat streams, so that it satisfies the bottleneck router requirements. We further show how the online failure detector control algorithm can be used to design a controller, analyze the theoretical aspects of the proposed algorithm and verify its agreement. Simulation results show the efficiency of our scheme in terms of high utilization of the bottleneck link, fast response and good stability of the bottleneck router buffer occupancy as well as of the controlled sending rates. In conclusion, the new failure detector algorithm provides a better QoS.

With the increase of multicast data applications, research interests have focused on the design of congestion control schemes for multicast communications. This paper describes a novel control-theoretic multicast congestion control scheme, which is based on the distributed self-tuning proportional plus integrative (SPI) controller. The control parameters can be designed to ensure the stability of the control loop in terms of source rate. The distributed explicit rate SPI overcomes the vulnerability that suffers from the heterogeneous multicast receivers. It is suggested that the congestion controller is located at the multipoint-to-multipoint multicast source to regulate the transmission rate. We further analyze the theoretical aspects of the proposed algorithm, and show how the control mechanism can be used to design a controller to support multicast transmissions. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme in terms of system stability and fast response of the buffer occupancy, as well as controlled sending rates, low packet loss, and high scalability

Active queue management (AQM) is an effective method used in Internet routers to enhance congestion control, and to achieve a trade off between link utilization and delay. The de facto standard, the random early detection (RED) AQM scheme, and most of its variants use queue length as a congestion indicator to trigger packet dropping. Random early detection (RED) is a widely studied active queue management (AQM) scheme implemented in routers for Internet congestion control. Although certain stability conditions for various RED controllers are discussed, no efficient method for dynamically adapting control gains or result on control gain optimization has been proposed so far. Therefore based on control theory, this paper proposes proportional and integral RED (PI-RED) algorithm, that not only considers the average queue length at the current time slot, but also takes into consideration the past average queue lengths within a round trip time. We provide guidelines for the selection of the feedback gains (the proportional parameter and the integral parameter) for TCP/RED system to stabilize the dynamics, make the congested queue converge at a certain target and hence to improve network performance. Simulations demonstrate that indeed satisfactory performance can be achieved if the control gains are selected based on the guidelines. Based on the stability condition and control gains selection method, extensive simulations with ns2 demonstrate that indeed satisfactory performance can be achieved in terms of robustness, drop probability and stability if the control gains are selected based on the guidelines

Our energy production increasingly depends on renewable energy sources, which impose new challenges for distributed and decentralized systems. One problem is that the availability of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar is not continuous as it is affected by meteorological factors. The challenge is to develop forecast methods capable of determining the level of power generation in near real-time in order to control power plants for optimal energy production. Another scenario is the identification of optimal locations for such power plants. In our collabora tive project, these tasks are investigated in the domain of energy meteorology. For that purpose large data sources from many different sensors (e.g., satellites and ground stations) are the base for complex computations. The idea is to parallelize these computations in order to obtain significant speedup. This paper reports on an ongoing project employing Grid technologies in that context. Our approach to processing large data sets from a variety of heterogeneous data sources as well as ideas for parallel and distributed computing in energy meteorology are presented. Preliminary experience with several Grid middleware systems in our application scenario is discussed. © 2006 IEEE.
