8.3.1 Towards an Integrated Methodology for the Model-based Development of Embedded Automotive Control software

The complexity of developing automotive control unit software can generally not be mastered without an efficient development methodology. The development discipline activities requirements, modelling / implementation and quality assurance are, for this reason, supported by individual methods. In order to optimally coordinate the methods with one another during their deployment, a structured integration of these individual specialised methods is, however, essential. The following paper, using the model-based development approach as an example, outlines the content and structure of an integrated methodology that provides such integration. Its use shortens development time and increases product quality by coordinating the deployment of individual methods over the course of the entire developmental process. The main components of this kind of integrated methodology are an interdisciplinary information model, process models with integrated procedures for the realisation of single development activities as well as guidance such as checklists, templates, and examples, among other things. In this paper, we present the experiences that we have gained at DaimlerChrylser Research in developing and applying such an integrated methodology1. © 2005 The Authors.

software evolution is the process of adapting an existing software system to conform to an enhanced set of requirements. software reengineering is software evolution performed in systematic way. Especially software system is fundamentally different from developing one from scratch. Consequently, tools to support evolution must go beyond forward engineering tools. This paper presents a reengineering method and tools for software evolution or modernization. The paper briefly describes MARMI-RE methodology before presenting the individual tools and how they interoperate to support legacy system modernization, We expect that our proposed methodology can be used flexibly because it presents various scenarios of migration process. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Usually, the functionality of a module of co-expressed genes is derived from enrichment within the module of a particular gene annotation category. The systematic setup of the chemostat cultivation experiments employed in this study, where Saccharomyces cerevisiae was grown under four different nutrient limitations, both aerobically and anaerobically, allows us to define the functionality of a module in terms of the module regulation pattern as a function of the growth parameters. In addition, we assign particular transcription factors (TF's) to each module, thus establishing a direct link between transcription factors and growth conditions. To define a module, the expression data is first discretized employing Lloyd quantization. This process assigns, for each differentially expressed gene in each of the growth conditions, one of three values: upregulated, downregulated or common level. A module is then defined as a group of genes with identical discretized expression patterns across all the growth conditions. To link a module to particular TF's, we exploit a recently published high quality dataset, which lists, for each gene which TF's can bind the upstream region of that gene, and thereby manipulate its expression. This enabled us to employ the hypergeometric distribution to establish statistically significant enrichment of TF's in particular modules. Such a link suggests a role for the TF in the regulation of the genes in the module. In addition to many known relationships, various putative relationships were predicted. These include the regulatory role of Tye7p in sulfur-limited growth. © 2005 IEEE.

Quality of service (QoS) management in compositions of services requires careful consideration of QoS characteristics of the services and effective QoS management in their execution. A Web service is a software system that supports interoperable application-to-application interaction over the Internet. Web services are based on a set of XML standards such as simple object access protocol (SOAP). The interactions of SOAP messages between Web services form the theoretical model of SOAP message exchange patterns (MEP). Web Services Business Process Execution Language (WSBPEL) defines an interoperable integration model that facilitates automated process integration in intra- and inter-corporate environments. A service-level agreement (SLA) is a formal contract between a Web services requestor and provider guaranteeing quantifiable issues at defined levels only through mutual concessions. Based on a prior research work on message detail record (MDR), this paper further proposes a SOAP message tracking model for supporting QoS end-to-end management in the context of WSBPEL and SLA. This paper motivates the study of QoS management in a Web service composition framework with the evolution of a distributed toolkit in an industrial setting.

The intricacy of real-time data service management increases mainly due to the emergence of applications operating in open and unpredictable environments, increases in software complexity, and need for performance guarantees. In this paper we propose an approach for managing the quality of service of real-time databases that provide imprecise and differentiated services, and that operate in unpredictable environments. Transactions are classified into service classes according to their level of importance. Transactions within each service class are further classified into subclasses based on their quality of service requirements. In this way transactions are explicitly differentiated according to their importance and quality of service requests. The performance evaluation shows that during overloads the most important transactions are guaranteed to meet their deadlines and that reliable quality of service is provided even in the face of varying load and execution time estimation errors

Program affordability needs to be built-in at the initial concept formulation stage. For NASA's space exploration vision this is critical for long range sustainability of human presence in space. What is often overlooked in the initial concept formulation of a large scale system endeavor such as NASA's Constellation program is the hidden cost of maintaining requisite operational safety margins and redundancy through adequate supply chain logistics. Ensuring adequate supply chain logistics necessitates the integration of operations and maintenance cycles. What enables this integration is the coordination and reconciliation across multiple equipment types of system health features and logistical information such as: (1) prognostic drivers from Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) systems producing proactive condition-based "maintain me" demands, (2) maintenance management systems tracking usage and producing scheduled maintenance demands, (3) unscheduled maintenance demands resulting from any trouble reports entered by human observers of conditions missed by the IVHM system, and (4) implicit maintenance demands resulting from mission plans which require assignment of vehicular/robotic assets and consequently require assurance of the assigned assets' fitness for the intended tasks. In this paper we discuss how Coordinated Multi-source Maintenance on Demand (CMMD) technology, which is being is transitioned to the USMC Coherent Analytical Computing Environment (CACE) program and the Joint Strike Fighter Program, can be applied to the NASA domain, and its benefits in terms of mission affordability, operations efficiency and system health effectiveness. Using concepts derived from CMMD, we discuss the kind of IVHM capabilities needed to optimize multiple, parallel, yet inter-linked, operations-maintenance cycles, thereby optimizing program affordability while meeting specific mission supportability requirements across a broad range of mission scenarios.

SWENET, the network community for software engineering education, is an NSF funded project to produce and organize high-quality materials supporting software engineering education. The project supports faculty members delivering software engineering degrees and also individual software engineering courses in other computing degrees. SWENET also seeks to foster the development of the community of software engineering educators. This paper discusses plans to continue this development beyond the period of the initial NSF grant. The paper begins with a summary of the SWENET efforts to create course materials and other SWENET activities. The paper also addresses future directions in developing shared course materials, and creation of permanent resources and mechanisms for interaction among software engineering educators

The discovery of the association between terms and a specified topic is a difficult task. A new data mining technique, topic-oriented mining and reasoning, is presented for this task. The technique consists of two threads: pattern mining and pattern reasoning. Pattern mining means the automatic discovery of interesting user topic models. A novel topic structure is presented for this thread. Pattern reasoning means the utilization and maintenance of the interesting user topic models to determine if an input data is relevant to the specified topic. The innovation for this thread is the use of meta-knowledge for the discovered knowledge. In this way the system can trace errors to update inadequate subtopics in the user topic model. The experimental results show that all objectives we expect for the topic-oriented model are achievable.

Ontology-based information retrieval is precise and effective but suffers from the problem of ontology heterogeneity. This paper focuses on the approximate information retrieval approach to solve the heterogeneity problem of both common ontologies as well as fuzzy ontologies on the semantic Web. Approximate information retrieval needs to find approximations of concepts. However, current methods cannot find the best approximations of concepts for common ontologies, and there is still no published work for fuzzy ontologies. This paper firstly proposes a method of approximate information retrieval between common ontologies. It defines multielement least upper bounds and multielement greatest lower bounds, and then simplifies the multielement bounds to remove redundancy. It provides effective algorithms to find the simplified multielement bounds, and get the best approximations of concepts from the bounds. Then for the fuzzy ontologies, the paper defines cut concepts to transform fuzzy concepts into common concepts, and then applies the proposed method for approximate information retrieval between fuzzy ontologies. The improved algorithms for fuzzy ontologies are given to make the method more feasible and effective
