A systems re-engineering technique to integrated control and supervision for applications to industrial multi-zone furnaces has been elaborated by using known theories on generalized predictive control and nonlinear programming. This paper presents the derivation of optimizing equations and inequalities. The design is based on the use of general predictive control to provide optimized set-points under the presumption a well designed regulatory control was implemented at the executive level. Digital implementation of control functions are sought within standard computer process control platform for practical engineering and maintenance reasons.

In order to ensure the displaying effect of Web applications, it is important to perform compatibility testing for browsers under the different user-side configurations. Since the user-side configurations have many combinations, it is a hard task to test the vast combinations efficiently. We focus on the improvements for browser compatibility testing. Firstly, we built a model for browser compatibility testing based on the characters of Web applications. Then we analyzed the functional speciality of the current popular browsers, and provided the preconditions to simplify the researching problems. Next we gave an instance of browser compatibility testing and brought forward the single factor covering method and the pair-wise covering design to gain testing suits, comparing and analyzing each advantage and disadvantage. And finally, we introduced the assistant tools we have developed and gave how our tools perform compared with others. © 2003 IEEE.

A great benefit of software inspections is that they can be applied at almost any stage of the software development life cycle. We document a large-scale experiment conducted during an entity relationship (ER) model inspection meeting. The experiment was aimed at finding empirically validated answers to the question "which reading technique has a more efficient detection rate when searching for defects in an ER model". Secondly, the effect of the usage of roles in a team meeting was also explored. Finally, we investigate the reviewers' ability to find defects belonging to certain defect categories. The findings showed that the participants using a checklist had a significantly higher detection rate than the ad hoc groups. Overall, the groups using roles had a lower performance than those without roles. Furthermore, the findings showed that when comparing the groups using roles to those without roles, the proportion of syntactic and semantic defects found in the number of overall defects identified did not significantly differ. © 2003 IEEE.

SWENET: The Network Community for software engineering Education is an NSF funded project to develop curriculum modules of value to faculty member's desiring to incorporate software engineering concepts in new or existing courses. By design, the modules are self-contained instructional units ranging from a single lecture to approximately one week of course material;in this way, instructors can adopt, adapt, and arrange modules as appropriate to their courses. The original goal was to provide appropriate coverage at the undergraduate level for the areas defined in the software engineering Body of Knowledge. Recently the focus has shifted to the more focused software engineering Education Body of Knowledge developed as part of the Computing Curricula - software engineering effort. As such, SWENET is evolving to become a repository of course modules that can support a wide range of educational approaches within the general framework defined by these bodies of knowledge. © 2003 IEEE.

Integrating multiple features content-based image retrieval can overcome the problems of single feature, but how to organize these features and feature representation methods is difficult in image retrieval. In this paper, an automatic feature weight assignment approach based on genetic algorithm is proposed. The problem of weight assignment is firstly changed into optimization problem, and genetic algorithm is used for finding the optimization weight in order to get the best retrieval results. The experimental results show that the recall and precision of this proposed approach is better than the others' weight assignment methods. This approach is robust to various kinds of features and feature representation methods, and it can get the best feature combination for image retrieval. © 2003 IEEE.

Object-orientation supports software reuse via features such as abstraction, information hiding, polymorphism, inheritance and redefinition. However, while libraries of classes do exist, one of the challenges that still remains is to locate suitable classes and adapt them to meet the specific requirements of the software developer. Traditional approaches to library retrieval are text-based; it is therefore difficult for the developer to express their requirements in a precise and unambiguous manner. A more promising approach is specification-based retrieval, where library component interfaces and requirements are expressed using a formal specification language. In this case retrieval is based on matching formal specifications. In this paper, we describe how existing approaches to specification matching can be extended to handle object-oriented components.

Informal presentations are a lightweight means for fast and convenient communication of ideas. People communicate their ideas to others on paper and whiteboards, which afford fluid sketching of graphs, words and other expressive symbols. Unlike existing authoring tools that are designed for formal presentations, we created SketchPoint to help presenters design informal presentations via freeform sketching. In SketchPoint, presenters can quickly author presentations by sketching slide content, overall hierarchical structures and hyperlinks. To facilitate the transition from idea capture to communication, a note-taking workspace was built for accumulating ideas and sketching presentation outlines. Informal feedback showed that SketchPoint is a promising tool for idea communication. Copyright 2003 ACM.
