The power grid is transforming and the increased usage of power electronics leads to non-linear power consumption demanding harmonic power flow analysis. Switched-mode power supplies are often used in this context since they massively increased efficiency and allow smaller form factors of devices. This paper provides a quasi-analytical solution with focus on the spectral analysis for evaluation of switched-mode power supplies as a model consisting of a full bridge rectifier with a parallel capacitor and an inverter represented as a resistor based on the assumption that the inverter behaves mostly ohmic in the pass-band of the full bridge rectifier. At first a quasi-analytic solution is provided, which allows to simulate the system considering the given assumptions for various component values. Afterwards an exemplary measurement is performed to show the practical behavior of the simulation. © 2022 IEEE.

Both learning management systems (LMSs) and new media technologies (NMTs, e.g., Augmented/Virtual Reality software or Serious Games) can enhance teaching and learning, however, the integration of both technologies within an E-Learning system is challenging. NMTs are often developed as bulky stand-alone applications, for example, using game engines, which make them difficult to integrate into the LMS courses. Thus, connecting middleware technologies are needed, however, various technologies exist. In this paper, we introduce three techniques (SCORM-Data, xAPI-Injection, and JSON-REST) that integrate stand-alone NMT learning software into LMSs based on existing technologies and standards from the E-Learning domain. We discuss the techniques and their underlying processes based on a prototype implementation and the results of an expert interview and point out the advantages and disadvantages of each technique to give practitioners differentiated advice on which technique to use. Although SCORM-Data has fewer technical requirements, we conclude that our JSON-REST technique was favored through applicability, simplicity, ease of integration, and efficiency. © 2022 ACM.

A Calibration Tool for Refractive Underwater vision

Many underwater robotic applications relying on vision sensors require proper camera calibration, i.e. knowing the incoming light ray for each pixel in the image. While for the ideal pinhole camera model all viewing rays intersect in a single 3D point, underwater cameras suffer from - possibly multiple - refractions of light rays at the interfaces of water, glass and air. These changes of direction depend on the position and orientation of the camera inside the water-proof housing, as well as on the shape and properties of the optical window, the port, itself. In recent years explicit models for underwater vision behind common ports such as flat or dome port have been proposed, but the underwater community is still lacking a calibration tool which can determine port parameters through refractive calibration. With this work we provide the first open source implementation of an underwater refractive camera calibration toolbox. It allows end-to-end calibration of underwater vision systems, including camera, stereo and housing calibration for systems with dome or flat ports. This research focuses on improving the identification of cyclone centers using deep learning and match recognition applied to radar images. Accurately pinpointing the cyclone's center is vital for predicting its intensity and trajectory. However, challenges persist in automatically locating the center due to the diverse nature of cyclone morphology and structure. To address this, the deep convolutional network's capability is leveraged to capture various structural features in images by proposing two-step approach for cyclone center localization. Initially, a pre-trained EfficientDet model is employed using transfer learning to obtain weights. Subsequently, these weights, along with the data, are utilized in a deep learning model to provide precise coordinates of the cyclone center in the respective image. The effectiveness of existing deep learning and machine learning models show that the cyclone prediction systems have an accuracy ranging from 86% to 92% or better, and cyclone eye detection accuracy surpassing 87%. Experiment outcomes indicate that the proposed methodology outperforms conventional methods and existing works, showcasing its potential for enhancing cyclone monitoring and forecasting. © 2024 IEEE.

In modern power systems, power electronic interfaces like Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs) uses advanced control strategies to ensure high-quality voltage regulation, significantly enhancing system stability and reliability for various applications. This paper introduces a novel voltage regulation method for VSIs using Sliding Mode Control (SMC) under extreme load variations [1]. Besides robustness, SMC is prone to chattering, causing power losses, reduced efficiency, and compromised transient response. To address chattering, an adaptive sliding surface selection mechanism that utilizes the Rotating Sliding Surface (RSS) technique and a new reaching law based on state variable magnitudes, which dynamically adjusts the control gain is proposed here. This composite reaching law uses exponential, power, and difference functions to achieve rapid convergence and reduce chattering. The sliding surface is chosen with a time-varying slope based on error variables. Tests on a single-phase VSI with varying loads demonstrate that the C-ERL-RSS SMC achieves a well-regulated output voltage with just 0.25% THD, reduced chattering, and minimal tracking time. Additionally, implementing the C-ERL-RSS SMC and PRERL SMC on a two-level three-phase VSI under varying load conditions shows superior efficiency and stability, with a low THD of 1.1%. Experimental evaluation on MicroLabBox-dSPACE 1202 for VSIs under extreme conditions reveals that the proposed technique excels in voltage regulation, offering fast transient response and low THD of 1.12% and 2.1% for single-phase and three-phase VSIs, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

In the current paper, a retrial tandem queueing system consisting of two stations in series is investigated. Each station is represented by a single server and a limited size buffer. Customers arrive at the first station according to a Markovian Arrival Process (MAP). The service time at the first and the second server has a Phase type (PH) distribution. The novelty of the model under consideration is the presence of a common orbit for blocked customers both at the first and second stations. Unlike other few studies of retrial tandem systems with a common orbit, our model is more general and we obtain analytical results using matrix-analytic technique. We derive the sufficient conditions for existence and absence of the stationary regime in the system, calculate the steady-state distribution of the number of customers in the orbit and at the stations and derive formulas for the most significant performance measures. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The Software testing is critical for ensuring the quality of software, but it can consume more than half of a software project's total expenses. This research can help software development teams identify potential bugs early on, leading to efficient and effective software creation. To improve the efficiency of software testing, this report presents research on software defect prediction using a hybrid machine learning algorithm that combines supervised and unsupervised learning techniques. The study used publicly available datasets to train and evaluate various machine learning models, including an ensemble learning model. A comparative analysis was conducted among KNN, Random Forest, Adaboost, Multilayer Perceptron, CNN, and Gaussian Naïve Bayes on different datasets. Feature selection was performed using various methods, including Recurrent Feature Elimination (RFE), SelectKBest, and Correlation, implemented by a tool created to select any feature selection algorithm and compare the results for various combinations with the above mentioned classifiers. The results achieved by the model are showed in detail for each of the algorithms on the selected datasets. The main objectives of the research are to create a tool to apply various machine learning techniques to the datasets and determine the most effective ones, as well as to explore different feature selection methods for improving the accuracy of defect prediction. © 2023 IEEE.

The objective of this research is to propose an AI based novel augmented reality (AR) software to assist users in operating a wide range of technical and non-technical devices. The project's aim is to make this AR application, which provides detailed explanations of all the device's functions, more widely used than traditional user manuals. Augmented reality, which overlays digital information onto the real world, can be employed to develop an AR-based user manual for products or devices. Mobile applications that use a camera to recognize a product or device and display dynamic graphics, such as 3 D models, animations, or text, are one example of AR user manuals. These augmented reality user manuals enable consumers to quickly and easily learn how to operate, assemble, repair, or troubleshoot their purchased products. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm was able to recognize the object accurately with a percentage of 95.2%. © 2024 IEEE.

Recently the topic of 'mental health' has gained high awareness, especially among younger generations. The age group that mostly gets affected by mental disorders is between 15-49 years of age. Research conducted on different social media data has found that a person with mental disorders (such as depression, anxiety, etc) tends to use social media more as compared to a mentally healthy person. Most users convey their emotional states through posting on public platforms, tweeting and accordingly watching related videos on YouTube that best describes their current mental state. It is also found that there is a difference in users' social media activities (on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube) with a healthy mind and one with an unhealthy mind. A study conducted in 2018 found that 45% of teenagers worldwide are constantly using the internet. According to research, teenagers use the internet on average for about nine hours each day. The internet can prove to be the easiest medium to monitor a person's online activities (such as posting on social media, writing emails, watching or liking YouTube videos, commenting on YouTube videos, etc). The aforementioned activities and the internet usage time of a person can help to understand his/her mental state. The user's social media activity can be analysed for finding potential patterns in his emotions/mood. These patterns can be helpful in uncovering underlying mental health issues such as depression, stress disorders, PTSD, schizophrenia etc. These findings can be reported to the user's therapist for their monitoring record. To predict the mental state of the user by analysing their social media activities, an initiative was taken to develop an application with the objective to forewarn its users of any negative patterns regarding the state of mind that they exhibit.
