River water temperature modeling – a time series problem where spatial relations matter – is important to understand our environment. Currently two research directions are present to tackle this problem, viz. Recurrent Neural Networks, namely long short-term memory (LSTM), and Graph-based approaches, which exploit the natural tree structure of rivers. In the present paper, we extend a state-of-the-art LSTM method for water temperature modeling with a Graph Convolutional Network and a Graph Isomorphism Network. This novel combination results in a spatio-temporal neural network which can be applied for node predictions in any graph having nodes with unique identifiers. In the present paper, we apply the novel procedure on the Swiss River Network (a data set with decades of measurements of river temperature and atmospheric variables in Switzerland). In an experimental evaluation we show that the proposed method is robust in convergence and improves the state-of-the-art result by several percentage points in terms of Root Mean Squared Error. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This study investigates how Active Constructive Responding (ACR), as positive feedback mechanisms, by a robot influences human emotions and perceptions. In a 2×2 between-subjects online experiment, participants experienced a positive learning event, followed by feedback from the robot NAO, which provided either ACR or Passive Destructive Responding (PDR) feedback. The study also explores whether these feedback effects are enhanced when the robot uses a human voice. Results indicate that ACR significantly improves various aspects of human-robot interaction (HRI), including participants’ perceived likeability, their motivation to engage in further tasks, and their emotional experience. Additionally, ACR feedback increases the perceived anthropomorphism of the robot. However, no difference in perceived anthropomorphism was found between the robot’s human and robotic voice, and the anticipated enhancement from the human voice was not confirmed. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Employing social robots in public spaces to support employees at work is a frequently discussed scenario. However, the success of robotic systems often depends on people’s willingness to initiate interactions with them. This makes understanding people’s usage decisions crucial, yet only limited research has been done on why people select publicly accessible social robots over alternatives, such as human employees. Amongst various factors, people’s diversity characteristics are likely to influence this decision, such as people’s locus of control when using technology and their self-efficacy in human-robot interaction. To investigate this choice for or against using a robot, a field study (N = 65) was conducted in two public libraries in the Ruhr area (Germany). Participants had to decide to interact with a robot or an employee and were subsequently asked to explain their decision via a questionnaire and an interview. Results reveal that the decision could neither be explained by people’s locus of control when using technology nor by other diversity characteristics. Furthermore, no significant differences in self-efficacy in human-robot interaction between users who chose the robot instead of the human employee were found. Finally, the qualitative findings point to general interest in robots and people’s differences in dealing with novelty as reasons for their choice. Overall, our findings offer insights into the decision for or against the usage of a robot, which are relevant to both, research and the deployment of social robots in public spaces. © The Author(s) 2025.

This article proposes a versatile Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna designed for contemporary wireless systems spanning frequencies from 3 to 20 GHz. It serves applications such as 5G mobile, WiFi, WiFi-6E, X-band, partial Ku, and K-band. The original single-element antenna evolves into a 4 × 4 MIMO configuration with optimized ground plane modifications for enhanced performance. A decoupling structure achieves over 20 dB isolation between inter-elements. The feeding structure, featuring a gradually changing design connected to the antenna’s radiating structure, achieves wide bandwidth characteristics. This is further improved by a partial ground structure and slots on the radiating element. The lower frequency band of 3 to 7 GHz is attained with a rectangle-shaped radiator, while semi-circular microstrip lines atop the radiator enable the higher frequency bands of 8 to 15.4 and 18.7 to 20 GHz. The slots and ground structure enhance impedance bandwidth, and semicircles improve the radiation pattern. The MIMO antenna demonstrates measured peak gains of 6.23 dBi at 11.5 GHz, maintaining a radiation efficiency exceeding 80%. Validation through metrics like ECC, DG, CCL, and TARC confirms strong agreement between simulated and experimental results, positioning the MIMO antenna as a robust choice for various wireless communication applications. © 2024, Electromagnetics Academy. Multi-party AI-driven chatbots remain largely unexplored, despite their potential to enhance internal communication and coordination within student learning groups. These benefits are increasingly feasible with the advent of large language models (LLMs), which enable more efficient content generation and chatbot customization. To bridge this gap, we carried out an exploratory study to examine students’ perceptions, practical applications, and concerns regarding the use of multi-party AI-driven chatbots in video-based collaborative learning environments. Based on the findings, we designed the Rainbow Bot, an optimized multi-party AI-driven chatbot. It features an interactive reflection process to strengthen group dynamics, customization options to adjust response length and content focus, and a unique color scheme for visual clarity. By combining colors from group members in refined prompts, Rainbow Bot fosters collaboration and promotes shared understanding within teams. Future work will assess its effectiveness in real educational settings, with a focus on its impact on group dynamics and collaborative learning outcomes. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Recent advancements in computer vision and deep learning have led to the widespread adoption of driver assistance systems (ADAS), which play a crucial role in detecting critical situations to ensure driving safety and comfort. However, achieving real-time monitoring of both the driver and the environment remains a significant challenge. This study addresses this gap by developing a real-time ADAS utilizing images from embedded platform cameras. The system employs a driver-oriented approach, analyzing driver conditions, including phone and cigarette use, as well as eye tracking, to detect fatigue and sleep, thus providing timely warnings. Models were trained on GPU using custom datasets, and detection speeds were compared across different embedded platforms and a computer environment. The study culminates in the development of a real-time ADAS prototype boasting a remarkable 95% accuracy rate. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This article presents the application of bread production processes through integrating AI-driven detection and tracking systems. Utilizing the YOLOv8 and DeepSORT algorithms, this study explores developing and implementing a real-time system for detecting, counting, and reporting bread units. The methodology includes the preparation of a dataset from an operational bakery and subsequent training of the system on the Jetson Xavier NX embedded platform. Our findings show that the system can detect bread with a 96% accuracy rate during the training phase. Implementing this system in a bread production facility has significantly improved efficiency, waste reduction, and workflow optimization. By providing detailed insights into both the technical setup and the operational outcomes, this research underscores the potential of intelligent technologies to transform bread production. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
