This paper presents a motor function rehabilitation system for the disabled with virtual reality. The design of the entire system is established on the SIGVerse virtual platform. The patient can complete the rehabilitation training immersed in a virtual environment. Firstly, the motion information of the patient is recognized by Kinect, and regenerated by the avatar in the virtual environment accurately. At the same time, the view of the avatar can be presented to the patient by HMD. Though this method, the patient can exposure to the virtual environment during the rehabilitation training, so that they can feel like their real and health motions in the virtual environment. Additionally, the EMG signals of the activated muscle are collected, and they can provide a feedback of contraction intensities of the muscle to the patient in real time. Moreover, we provide an electrical stimulation to the corresponding muscle. As a result, the patient can have the perception of muscle contractions.

In the very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime, fatigue damage starts by the formation of slip bands within the softer austenite phase. By high energy X-ray diffraction it was shown that local austenite plasticity due to elastic/plastic anisotropy results in the gradual formation of residual stresses within the ferrite grains. Consequently, cracks are initiated either transgranularly or intergranularly at austenite/ferrite phase boundaries or ferrite/ferrite grain boundaries in the vicinity of the austenite slip bands. By means of ultrasonic fatigue testing of miniature specimens in combination with (i) in-situ observation, (ii) electron back- scatter diffraction, (iii) synchrotron computer tomography, and (vi) high-energy X-ray diffraction, the fatigue crack initiation process and the interactions of the cracks with the first microstructural barriers were quantified. By implementing the results in a numerical modeling approach, the experimental observation that the first barrier seems to limit the VHCF life was supported.

UAV can work in places that are dangerous, or not easy to reach for humans. However, due to active control and operating difficulties, it is still a challenge to develop fully autonomous flight in complex environments. This paper applies a novel heuristic dynamic programming for the UAV heading optimal tracking controller design, using kernel-based heuristic dynamic programming (KHDP). Kernel-based HDP is developed by integrating kernel methods and approximately linear dependence (ALD) analysis with the critic learning of HDP algorithm. Compared with conventional HDP where neural networks are widely used and their features were manually designed, the proposed algorithm can obtain better generalization capability and learning efficiency through applying the sparse kernel machine into the critic learning process of HDP algorithm. Simulation and experimental results of UAV heading optimal tracking control problems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed kernel-based HDP algorithm.

OFDM is promising for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications due to its potential to combat the large delay spread. However, the performance of the OFDM system is seriously deteriorated by the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by the transmitter/receiver motion and ocean waves. In this paper, we propose a novel ICI countermeasure. The key idea is to inactivate partial subcarriers according to index modulation and meanwhile transmit signals with opposite polarity on two adjacent active subcarriers for ICI self cancellation. Simulation results validate that the proposed scheme achieves much better bit error rate (BER) performance than many existing schemes in UWA communications.

In the article, two approaches to pattern recognition of signals are compared: a direct and a multistage. It is assumed that there are two generic patterns of signals, i.e. a two-class problem is considered. The direct method classifies signal in one step. The multistage method uses a multiresolution representation of signal in wavelet bases, starting from a coarse resolution at the first stage to a more detailed resolutions at the next stages. After a signal is assigned to a class, the posterior probability for this class is counted and compared with a fixed level. If the probability is higher than this level, the algorithm stops. Otherwise the signal is rejected and on the next stage the classification procedure is repeated for a higher resolution of signal. The posterior probability is calculated again. The algorithm stops when the probability is higher than a fixed level and a signal is finally assigned to a class. The wavelet filtration of signal is used for feature selection and acts as a magnifier. If the posterior probability of recognition is low on some stage, the number of features on the next stage is increased by taking a better resolution. The experiments are performed for three local decision rules: naive Bayes, linear and quadratic discriminant analysis.

Among health behaviors, physical activity has the most extensive record of research using passive sensors. control systems and other system dynamic approaches have long been considered applicable for understanding human behavior, but only recently has the technology provided the precise and intensive longitudinal data required for these analytic approaches. Although sensors provide intensive data on the patterns and variations of physical activity over time, the influences of these variations are often unmeasured. Health behavior theories provide an explanatory framework of the putative mediators of physical activity changes. Incorporating the intensive longitudinal measurement of these theoretical constructs is critical to improving the fit of control system model of physical activity and for advancing behavioral theory. Theory-based control models also provide guidance on the nature of the controllers which serve as the basis for just-in-time adaptive interventions based on these control system models.

This paper describes a new method for how interfering MIMO links might transmit more effectively in a random access network. We assume perfect transmitter-side channel state information, zero-forcing pre-coding to guarantee no interference on links that have already won access, and zero-forcing receiver processing at the still-contending links to suppress interference from the links that have already won. We define an effectiveness metric, the Instantaneous Equivalent SNR Percentile (IESP), in which the Equivalent SNR is the SNR of a single-input-single-output (SISO) link that would have the same capacity of a MIMO link after its interference constraints have been met and the IESP is the percentile of the Equivalent SNR, assuming independent Rayleigh fading. We propose that fairness among heterogeneous contending links be realized by giving the shorter contention window to the link with the higher IESP based on its own distribution, enabling links with few antennas to compete with links that have many antennas. Through simulation of the sum capacity of the winning set of links, the proposed contention window design is shown to provide a higher sum capacity than contention based on equal-sized windows.

We discuss the problem of discovering changes in evolving XML schemas. Schema evolution is a natural, unavoidable phenomenon in contemporary data systems, that impacts both data transformation and query rewriting. We propose a rule-based algorithm that determines matched and unmatched schema elements thereby identifying changes in a schema under consideration. Additionally, we develop a method for computing edit distance in terms of some schema operations (insertion, deletion, renaming, and translocation). In result, we are able to obtain a set of operations which transform a given schema into the modified (target) form. The proposed algorithms have been fully implemented.
