Imitation is different from other similar social learning techniques such as mimicking. True imitation is goal-directed and involves abstraction. This paper presents a hierarchical concept learning scheme, which uses imitation to learn new actions based on perceived observations. Presented demonstrations are composed of a spatio-temporal signal and a feature vector. In this paper a probabilistic model is provided in order to represent these hybrid demonstrations. These models have been used in an autonomous concept learning algorithm which uses effects of actions as a measure of functional similarity. Also a functional space is defined to determine concepts similarity. An algorithm for high-level concept formation in this space is provided. The proposed methods are used and evaluated in an air hockey simulation environment. Simulation results show efficiency of the proposed methods in recognition and reproduction of air hockey basic shots and their ability for hierarchical concept learning.

A novel sparse representation based multi-source localization method is presented in this work. We envision a wireless network infrastructure containing multiple phase arrays of acoustic sensors. With multiple arrays, direct estimation of a set of source locations is achieved using a new joint sparse representation of array covariance matrices (JSRACM). This representation transforms the source location estimation problem into a spatial sparse signal representation (SSSR) optimization problem. To mitigate the high computation complexity of JSRACM, a novel binary sparse indicative vector (SIV) is introduced to represent the support of joint SSSR of array covariance matrices. As such, the multiple source locations may be estimated by solving an unconstrained optimization problem of the SIV vector using existing FOCUSS-like algorithms. The resulting SIVR-JSRACM algorithm does not require prior information of the number of sources nor initial source location estimates. It promises super-resolution, robustness to noise, and low computing complexity which is independent of the number of sensor phase arrays. Simulation results demonstrate superior performance of the proposed algorithm.

A processes composed of sequences of local cyclic The theoretical prediction of the behavioral properties of periodic structures is less difficult than in the case of nonperiodic ones. That is because all the information needed to describe the entire structure is given by the elementary substructure itself and by the manner it repeats in the whole periodic structure. So, only a small portion of the structure (which includes the repeating substructure) needs to be considered to obtain the properties of the whole periodic structure. In that context, the contribution provides the discussion of some system periodicity issues, and is aimed at modeling and evaluation of relationships linking the system structure features with required system's functioning.

In this paper we present the idea that by using AI planning in concert with formal task modeling, the overhead associated with plan creation for complex tasks can be reduced. The proposed approach uses a SysML taxonomy to model the system capabilities and the process specification, and the PDDL planning language to determine acceptable objective solutions. This idea is applied to the manufacturing domain, and examples are shown modeling a multi-robot system in an automobile manufacturing environment. A discussion is given regarding the merits of the demonstrated approach.

In this paper, we combine navigation function-like potential fields and constraint based programming to achieve obstacle avoidance in formation. Constraint based programming was developed in robotic manipulation as a technique to take several constraints into account when controlling redundant manipulators. The approach has also been generalized, and applied to other control systems such as dual arm manipulators and unmanned aerial vehicles. Navigation functions are an elegant way to design controllers with provable properties for navigation problems. By combining these tools, we take advantage of the redundancy inherent in a multi-agent control problem and are able to concurrently address features such as formation maintenance and goal convergence, even in the presence of moving obstacles. We show how the user can decide a priority ordering of the objectives, as well as a clear way of seeing what objectives are currently addressed and what are postponed. We also analyze the theoretical properties of the proposed controller. Finally, we use a set of simulations to illustrate the approach.

Characterization of radio communication signals aims at automatic recognition of different characteristics of radio signals in order to detect their modulation type, the central frequency, and the level. The authors" purpose is to apply techniques used in image processing in order to extract pertinent characteristics. To the single analysis (recognition of membership of certain frequency signal to a radio communication using its characteristics), the authors add several rules for checking the consistency of hypotheses using fuzzy logic. This allows taking into account ambiguity and uncertainty that may remain after the extraction of individual characteristics. The task has been realized in MATLAB. The aim is to improve the process of radio communications characterization.
