This study investigates whether high-resolution brain-functional connectivity, which is measured by using Electroencephalography (EEG) combined with Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) can be useful in Alzheimer Disease Diagnosis. The major issue with Alzheimer's disease (AD) is that it leads to cognitive decline and affects millions of people worldwide. Early prediction of the disease is mandatory and crucial for timely intervention and effective care. EEG signals, a non-invasive and cost-effective method to assess brain activity, have shown potential in predicting this disease. In this study, we propose an approach that utilizes EEG data combined with Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) and machine learning algorithms for classification which is a novelty of the study that enables early prediction of Alzheimer's disease. Our methodology was tested on a dataset comprising EEG signals recorded using 19 electrodes from both healthy individuals and patients with Alzheimer's and the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The results were promising, demonstrating high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Machine learning techniques can be employed for categorizing EEG signals, but it essential to validate their effectiveness using large and diverse datasets. This research highlights the potential of HHT and EEG data in the prediction of this disease. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used for dimensional reduction of the dataset. Notably EEG signals combined with Hilbert Huang Transform and Principal Component Analysis gives better accuracy of 98.6% for KNN. This research highlights the potential of EEG analysis combined with advanced techniques for accurate classification of dementia-related disorders.

In this paper, we present a new approach to estimate the pose of an object being manipulated by a multi-fingered robotic hand. The method utilizes advanced tactile sensors with high spatial resolution to optimize the estimation of the object's pose using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based approach. We defined and derived the state and measurement equations, as well as evaluated the estimation accuracy in grasping tasks. The approach is able to effectively account for the pose transition caused by tactile pushing, and the mapping from the object's pose to the contact position and normal direction as measured by the tactile sensor. The method was evaluated in multiple grasping experiments in simulation scenarios. Results show that the estimation can converge towards the ground truth in a relatively short period of time, with displacement and rotation errors remaining within acceptable levels. This new method has the potential to improve the accuracy and reliability of robotic grasping and manipulation tasks. © 2023 IEEE.

An Erasure-Coded Data Update Method for Distributed Storage Clusters

Erasure coding is widely deployed in distributed storage clusters to provide data reliability, but the disk I/O overhead becomes a performance bottleneck when data updates are intensive. On the one hand, traditional data update strategies need to read the original data chunk, and then write new data when updating the data chunk. In the case of intensive updates, frequent write-after-read seriously affects the write performance of the storage clusters. On the other hand, the operations of updating the parity chunk include reading the increments randomly distributed in the log file and merging them with the data file, which also introduces additional disk seek overhead. In this paper, a data updating method, named PARD (parity logging with reserved space and data delta), is proposed to solve these problems. The main idea of PARD is to use the linear calculations of erasure coding to reduce write-after-read, and take advantage of the disk characteristics to reduce the disk seek overhead. PARD comprises three key design features: 1) Adopting in-place data updates and log-based parity updates. 2) Taking advantage of the linear calculations of erasure coding to construct the log based on data increments. For a series of write requests to the same data chunk, only the first update needs to read the original data chunk, and the subsequent update executes the pure write, which remarkably reduces the write-after-read. 3) According to the characteristics of disk, reserving space for the log at the end of data file to reduce the disk seek overhead of reading and writing log. Experiments show that when the chunk size is 4 MB, PARD gains at least, 30.4%, 47.0% and 82.0% improvements in update throughput compared with PLR, PARIX, and FO, respectively. © 2022, Science Press. Adaptive Data Placement Strategy in Mobile Distributed Storage System

Distributed storage system is receiving more and more attention in mobile network scenarios. Data placement, a key technology of distributed storage, is crucial to improve the success rate of distributed data storage. However, due to unstable wireless signals and fluctuating network bandwidth in mobile environments, the traditional data placement strategies, such as random placement strategy and storage-aware placement strategy, have low success rates of data transmission because both of them do not take network bandwidth into account during data placement. To solve the problem faced by mobile distributed storage systems, this study proposes a bandwidth-aware adaptive data placement strategy (BADP). The main breakthrough is that BADP adopts the group mobility model to sense the network bandwidth of nodes and takes the network bandwidth as an important factor for data placement, thus selecting nodes with good performance to achieve adaptive data placement and improve the success of data transmission. BADP consists of three design features: (1) adopting the group mobility model to sense the network bandwidth of nodes;(2) managing node information in groups to reduce communication overhead, and taking advantage of the heap to build a node selection tree;(3) selecting nodes with good performance using adaptive data placement to improve the success rate of data transmission. Experiments show that when the network changes dynamically, BADP gains at least 30.6% and 34.6% improvements in the success rate of data transmission compared with random placement strategy and storage-aware placement strategy. At the same time, it consistently keeps communication overhead low. © 2024 Chinese Academy of Sciences. All rights reserved.

Abstract: To assess the nature of the relationship between the integral conformational stability of tetrapeptides and the main types of β-turns (which are also tetrapeptides), spectrum diagrams, the asymmetry of the distribution of conformationally stable and unstable tetrapeptides have been calculated. It has been shown that β-turns of types I', II, and II' consist mainly of conformationally labile peptides;this is consistent with the context-predetermined nature of their structure. Since, as we have shown earlier, in this case the conformation is imposed by external conditions (specifically, the closure of the cycle), the prevalence of conformation-labile peptides facilitates the formation of the structure due to external factors. The type I β-turn is an exception, since peptides with different conformational lability are distributed fairly even in it. It can be assumed that the formation of the type I β-turn is not contextually determined. © 2023, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

The paper presents a novel observer design method for estimating the front and rear wheel slips of the vehicle. The proposed observer design technique consists of two parts: A simple linear observer algorithm, which uses a reformulated lateral vehicle model to estimate the tire slips. The second part is based on an ultra-local model. The main goal of the ultra-local model is to eliminate the nonlinear, unmodeled, uncertain dynamics of the lateral vehicle model. In this way, the performance level of the linear observer can be significantly increased especially under critical circumstances such as high lateral acceleration maneuvers or driving on a low µ surface. The proposed observer algorithm is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink environment connected to the high-fidelity simulation software, CarMaker. The operation and the effectiveness of the proposed observer are demonstrated through several simulation examples.

The efficient operation of HVAC&R systems are based on keeping indoor temperature and air quality at an optimum level without disturbing comfort. Starting from this point, in this experimental research, the factors affecting the measurement accuracy during the room temperature detection of a wall mount fan coil thermostat were examined. Among the external effects, the effect of the device components on the measurement was focused and the solution of the measurement deviations occurred in this extent was investigated. Based on the experiments, the algorithm that must be applied to reach the optimum temperature measurement of a room thermostat developed for Fan Coil systems was proposed. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a robust controller designed for load frequency control in a dual-area integrated power grid. Here, the suggested controller is a blend of a fuzzy logic controller with an integral controller. The parameters of the integral controller and frequency bias settings are optimized to enhance the dynamic response of the proposed controller. To attain this, three distinct optimization algorithms are employed, i.e., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and pattern search. A new objective function using settling time, settling-max, and settling-min with a suitable weight factor is used to improve the parameters estimation process. A comparative analysis is performed using the proposed approach and classical-I controller under two cases considering several load disturbance scenarios. Furthermore, the suggested hybrid controller is evaluated and compared with similar models in the literature. As expected, the proposed controller exhibits superior performance. © 2023 IEEE.
