Data Heterogeneity Challenge in Consumer Electronics: A Federated Learning Solution

Federated learning(FL) enables collaborative model training across consumer electronic devices while preserving data privacy. However, the non-independent and identically distributed nature of data in real-world scenarios significantly impacts personalization performance. To address this challenge, we propose pFedPKD, in this framework, we first employ model pruning to simplify the global model, thereby enhancing its adaptability and improving the efficiency of knowledge transfer between different electronics devices. Moreover, we introduce an attention-based knowledge transfer mechanism, which leverages knowledge distillation to transfer the attention map and predictions of the pruned global model to the local models, thus improving their generalization capability and performance. Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate that pFedPKD consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving higher personalization accuracy and robustness under heterogeneous data distributions. This work provides an efficient solution for applying FL in consumer electronics, offering improved adaptability and resource efficiency. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Aiming at the complex problem of parameter tuning of fractional order PID controller, an improved sparrow search algorithm(ISSA) is proposed for parameter tuning. The elite reverse learning is used to initialize the population and improve the iterative process. At the same time, the random walk mechanism is introduced and the conversion probability P is set so that they can be executed alternately. Optimize the 10 benchmark functions and the results indicate that ISSA improves the convergence accuracy, convergence speed and global search ability. Finally, two kinds of control systems are simulated. Compare with the existing results, the optimization and effectiveness of parameter tuning of FOPID controller based on ISSA are verified. © 2022 IEEE.

Cell-to-cell communication (CCC) plays essential roles in multicellular organisms. the identification of CCC between cancer cells themselves and one between cancer cells and normal cells in tumor microenvironment contributes to the understanding of carcinogenesis, cancer development and metastasis. CCC is usually mediated by Ligand-Receptor Interactions (LRIs). In this manuscript, we developed an LRI-mediated CCC estimation framework (LRI-EnABCLG) by incorporating LRI collection, prediction and filtering, CCC inference and visualization. First, four LRI datasets were collected. Second, LRIs were predicted by a heterogeneous deep ensemble model. Third, LRIs were filtered by combining single-cell sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. Fourth, CCC was inferred by combining the filtered LRIs and scRNA-seq data. Finally, the proposed CCC prediction framework was applied to CCC analysis in colorectal tumor tissues. Our proposed LRI-EnABCLG model obtained better LRI prediction performance. Case study demonstrated that fibroblasts was more likely to communicate with colorectal cancer cells, which was in accord with the results from iTALK (a classical CCC analysis pipeline). We anticipate that this work can contribute to diagnosis and treatment of cancers. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper studies efficient algorithms for dynamic curing policies and the corresponding network design problems to guarantee fast extinction of epidemic spread in a Markov process-based susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model. We provide a computationally efficient curing algorithm based on the curing policy proposed by Drakopoulos, Ozdaglar, and Tsitsiklis (2014). Since the corresponding optimization problem is NP-hard, finding optimal policies is intractable for large graphs. We provide approximation guarantees on the curing budget of the proposed dynamic curing algorithm. To avoid the waiting period included in the original curing policy, we study network design problems to reduce the total infection rate by deleting edges or reducing the weight of edges. To this end, we provide algorithms with provable guarantees. In summary, the proposed curing and network design algorithms together provide an effective and computationally efficient approach that mitigates SIS epidemic spread in networks.

The videoscope (VS) images have poor quality and low contrast. Hence, in this paper, three proposed frameworks to improve the quality of VS images are presented. The first framework depends on contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) with adaptive gamma correction. The second framework depends on homomorphic processing. The third framework is based on the homomorphic enhancement with histogram equalization. The importance of proper data normalization for deep neural networks is well known. However, in continuous-time state-space model estimation, it has been observed that improper normalization of either the hidden state or hidden state derivative of the model estimate, or even of the time interval can lead to numerical and optimization challenges with deep learning based methods. This results in a reduced model quality. In this contribution, we show that these three normalization tasks are inherently coupled. Due to the existence of this coupling, we propose a solution to all three normalization challenges by introducing a normalization constant at the state derivative level. We show that the appropriate choice of the normalization constant is related to the dynamics of the to-be-identified system and we derive multiple methods of obtaining an effective normalization constant. We compare and discuss all the normalization strategies on a benchmark problem based on experimental data from a cascaded tanks system and compare our results with other methods of the identification literature. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

We present a methodology for designing a dynamic controller with delayed output feedback for achieving non-collocated vibration suppression with a focus on the multi-frequency case. To synthesize the delay-based controller, we first remodel the system of equations as a delay-differential algebraic equation (DDAE) in such a way that existing tools for design of a static output feedback controller can be easily adapted. The problem of achieving non-collocated vibration suppression with sufficient damping is formulated as a constrained optimization problem of minimizing the spectral abscissa in the presence of zero-location constraints, with the constraints exhibiting polynomial dependence on its parameters. We transform the problem into an unconstrained one using elimination, following which we solve the resulting non-convex, non-smooth optimization problem.

We consider the synthesis problem of a multi-agent system under signal temporal logic (STL) specifications representing bounded-time tasks that need to be satisfied recurrently over an infinite horizon. Motivated by the limited approaches to handling recurring STL systematically, we tackle the infinite-horizon control problem with a receding horizon scheme equipped with additional STL constraints that introduce minimal complexity and a backward-reachability-based terminal condition that is straightforward to construct and ensures recursive feasibility. Subsequently, we decompose the global receding horizon optimization problem into agent-level programs the objectives of which are to minimize local cost functions subject to local and joint STL constraints. We propose a scheduling policy that allows individual agents to sequentially optimize their control actions while maintaining recursive feasibility. This results in a distributed strategy that can operate online as a model predictive controller. Last, we illustrate the effectiveness of our method via a multi-agent system example assigned a surveillance task.
