In this paper, we propose a reduced-reference scheme for evaluating the quality of blurred images under the theory of free-energy principle. Specifically, the free-energy principle indicates that the brain tries to account for the input image with an internal generative model and the discrepancy between the image and its model-explained version, which can be measured by free energy, is related to the image's perceptual quality. Accordingly, we define a visual distance between the blurred image and its original image in free energy to evaluate the quality of the blurred image. Therefore, the proposed quality scheme belongs to reduced-reference methods, which needs some information from the original image for quality assessment. Experimental results on public databases, LIVE, TID2013 and C-SIQ, demonstrate the proposed method works in high consistency with subjective assessment results and outperforms representative image quality assessment approaches.

A Study of Statistical Machine Translation Methods for Under Resourced Languages

This paper contributes an empirical study of the application of ﬁve state-of-the-art machine translation to the trans- lation of low-resource languages. The methods studied were phrase-based, hierarchical phrase-based, the operational sequence model, string-to-tree, tree-to-string statistical machine translation methods between English (en) and the under resourced languages Lao (la), Myanmar (mm), Thai (th) in both directions. The performance of the machine translation systems was automatically measured in terms of BLEU and RIBES for all experiments. Our main ﬁndings were that the phrase-based SMT method generally gave the highest BLEU scores. This was counter to expectations, and we believe indicates that this method may be more robust to limitations on the data set size. However, when evaluated with RIBES, the best scores came from methods other than phrase-based SMT, indicating that the other methods were able to handle the word re-ordering better even under the constraint of limited data. Our study achieved the highest reported results on the data sets for all translation language pairs.

Picture array generation using flat splicing operation

The operation of splicing on words was introduced by Tom Head while proposing a theoretical model of DNA recombination. Subsequent investigations on splicing on linear and circular strings of symbols have resulted in a number of theoretical properties. A different kind of splicing on two words, referred to as flat splicing, has been considered recently. This operation is extended to flat splicing on picture arrays, thus defining a new model of generation of digitized pictures, which is called as array flat splicing system (AFS). Results on the generative power of AFS in comparison with certain well-known picture array defining models and certain non-closure results are obtained. Conventional Nyquist sampling and reconstruction of square waves at a finite rate will always result in aliasing because square waves are not band limited. Based on methods for signals with finite rate of innovation (FRI), generalized Analog Thresholding (gAT-n) is able to sample square waves at a much lower rate under ideal conditions. The target application is efficient, real-time, implantable neurotechnology that extracts spiking neural signals from the brain. This paper studies the effect of integrator noise and quantization error on the accuracy of reconstructed square waves. We explore realistic values for integrator noise and input signal amplitude, using specifications from the Texas Instruments IVC102 integrator chip as a first-pass example because of its readily-available data sheet. ADC resolution is varied from 1 to 16 bits. This analysis indicates that gAT-1 is robust against these hardware non-idealities where gAT-2 degrades less gracefully, which makes gAT-1 a prime target for hardware implementation in a custom integrated circuit. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper proposes an improved epsilon constraint handling method embedded in the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) to solve constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs). More specifically, it dynamically adjusts the epsilon level, which is a critical parameter in the epsilon constraint method, according to the feasible ratio of solutions in the current population. In order to verify the effect of the improved epsilon constraint handling method, three algorithms - MOEA/D-CDP, MOEA/D-Epsilon, and MOEA/D-IEpsilon (MOEA/D with the improved epsilon constraint handling mechanism) are tested on nine CMOPs (CMOP1-CMOP9). The comprehensive experimental results indicate that the proposed epsilon constraint handling method is very effective on the performance of both convergence and diversity.

The difference of protein sequence or protein structure can be used for the construction of molecular evolutionary tree or phytogenetic tree with certain hierarchy and topology. The divergent points in the tree suggest that new genes appeared or common ancestors varied. The lengths of the branch in the tree show the evolution distances between proteins when divergences happened. The analysis of protein evolution can propose some methods for molecular evolution of various species and can confirm the accurate status in the evolution history. Moreover, the molecular evolution tree of proteins is a strong evidence for species classification. In the paper, the trees are constructed by the regular express of protein sequences and the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed method in the paper can be used conveniently and can give reliable results, which benefit the biology computing and sequence analysis. Copyright © 2016 American Scientific Publishers. Array P systems with parallel rewriting and tables of context-free rules

The two areas of picture languages and membrane computing were linked by array-rewriting P system in which array objects and context-free array-rewriting rules are used in order to generate picture languages. While rewriting arrays in the array-rewriting P system is in a sequential manner, parallel array P system (PAP) involves rewriting of arrays in the regions in parallel in order to generate picture languages. A variant of PAP, known as tabled array P system (TPAP), uses sets of context-free array-rewriting rules, called tables of rules.
