Recent progress in the NDE of cast ship propulsion components

The failure of propulsion components of ships and ferries can lead to serious environmental and economic damage or even the loss of lives. For ultrasonic inspection of such large components we employ mechanized scanning and defect reconstruction using the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT). We report on results obtained in view of the detection of defects with different inspection techniques. Also, we address the issue of Probability of Detection by reporting results obtained in POD and MAPOD-studies (Model-Assisted POD) using experimental and simulated data. Finally, we show recent results of surface and sub-surface inspection using optical and eddy current techniques.

The evaluation of residual stresses using ultrasound can be a very complex issue, because different material properties may effect the propagation of ultrasonic waves. Nevertheless, in the manufacturing of modern aero engines it is essential to benefit from the full potential of the employed materials. In this context, it is indispensable to test whether ultrasonic stress measurement is applicable for the highly developed nickel- and titanium-based alloys. This contribution contains basic investigations on the achievable measurement effect in samples made of Inconel IN718 and the Titanium alloy Ti 6-2-4-6. Furthermore, we give an overview over the principles of ultrasonic stress measurement using bulk and Rayleigh waves and present first results which are discussed with respect to texture effects and future work.

Noise-benefit forbidden-interval theorems for threshold signal detectors based on cross correlations

We show that the main forbidden interval theorems of stochastic resonance hold for a correlation performance measure. Earlier theorems held only for performance measures based on mutual information or the probability of error detection. Forbidden interval theorems ensure that a threshold signal detector benefits from deliberately added noise if the average noise does not lie in an interval that depends on the threshold value. We first show that this result holds for correlation for all finite-variance noise and for all forms of infinite-variance stable noise. A second forbidden-interval theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a local noise benefit in a bipolar signal system when the noise comes from a location-scale family. A third theorem gives a general condition for a local noise benefit for arbitrary signals with finite second moments and for location-scale noise. This result also extends forbidden intervals to forbidden bands of parameters. A fourth theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a local noise benefit when both the independent signal and noise are normal. A final theorem derives necessary and sufficient conditions for forbidden bands when using arrays of threshold detectors for arbitrary signals and location-scale noise.

In High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the computational complexity has been increased so that an Early SKIP mode decision method is proposed by using coded block flag of an inter prediction unit (PU) to speed up mode decision with BD-bitrate increase. In this paper, we propose a fast SKIP mode decision algorithm to speed up PU mode decision for HEVC in a rate-distortion (RD) optimization sense. It is based on an adaptive linear predictor for PU mode type and available neighboring SKIP mode units on the quad-tree partition structure in HEVC for adaptive RD optimization. Moreover, the proposed method consists of both local (neighboring PUs) and global (previous PUs in current frame) level schemes on each coding unit (CU) level. In this way, it is possible to exploit high correlations between the RD cost of SKIP mode and spatial characteristics of video sequences by using the distribution of SKIP mode and a linear RD cost predictor. Experimental results show that the encoding computational complexity can be reduced by an average of 36 % with threshold RD cost, when compared to that of the HM 12 reference software.

Spatial modulation (SM) is a relatively new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology that can provide high data rate with reasonable spectral efficiency. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) performance of SM systems under vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel models is investigated. The theoretical BER expression is given. The impact of some V2V channel model parameters on the underlying space-time correlation function (STCF) and the BER performance of SM systems are also studied. Simulation results indicate that modulation schemes, maximum Doppler frequency, the distance between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx), and antenna element spacings can affect the performance of SM systems.

In this paper, we propose a no reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) algorithm based on distortion identification (DI) and multi-channel label transfer (LT). First, the distortion type classification is used to obtain the query image's probabilities of belonging to each distortion type. Then, the distortion specific label transfer is implemented in multiple distortion category channels. Based on the hypothesis that the similar images share the similar subjective qualities, the label transfer predicts the subjective quality of the query image by pooling the labels of its k-nearest neighbors (KNN) retrieved from the annotated samples. A weighting average of the multi-channel label transfer's outputs is computed to obtain the final perceptual quality score. The weight is the query image's probability that belongs to the corresponding distortion type. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms representative NR-IQA approaches and some full-reference metrics.

We present a systematic design procedure for selecting a proper controller based on Lyapunov stability theory in Chua's circuit. This method needs only a single controller to realize synchronization of this chaotic system based on back-stepping procedure. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive control approach for synchronization of uncertain Chua's circuit. Finally we provide some numerical simulations to show the effectiveness and feasibility of the developed methods. 1553-9105/Copyright © 2013 Binary Information Press.

A bipartite state ρAB is symmetric extendible if there exists a tripartite state ρABB′ whose AB and AB′ marginal states are both identical to ρAB. Symmetric extendibility of bipartite states is of vital importance in quantum information because of its central role in separability tests, one-way distillation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pairs, one-way distillation of secure keys, quantum marginal problems, and antidegradable quantum channels. We establish a simple analytic characterization for symmetric extendibility of any two-qubit quantum state ρAB; specifically, tr(ρB2)≥tr(ρAB2)−4detρAB. As a special case we solve the bosonic three-representability problem for the two-body reduced density matrix.
