We introduce a 3D segmentation framework which uses principal shapes. The probabilistic energy function of the method is defined based on intensity, tissue type, and location information of the structures using a multiple atlas method. For intensity information, nonparametric probability density function is used which considers intensity relation of different structures. To find a local minimum of the energy function, a two-step optimization strategy is used. In the first step, shape parameters are optimized based on the analytic derivatives of the energy function. In the second step, shapes of the structures are fine-tuned using a level set method. The proposed method is shown to be superior to some popular methods in the literature using a dataset of 64 patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. In addition, the method can be used for lateralization with accuracy close to that of manual segmentation.

Considering the complexity of the rational B´zier harmonic surfaces, in this paper an approximated algorithm for constructing rational B´zier harmonic surfaces is proposed. By using polynomial curves and surfaces to approximate rational curves and surfaces and constructing B´zier harmonic surfaces with the Monterde method, the rational B´zier harmonic surface modeling problem can be transformed into an optimization problem of how to minimize a nonlinear function with a limited number of variables under a linear constrained condition. The proposed algorithm is also extended into constructing the rational B´zier biharmonic surfaces. The method is validated by examples of biharmonic surfaces of degree three and harmonic surfaces of degree two and three .The experimental results show that the algorithm proposed performs well in the application of constructing rational B´zier harmonic surfaces and biharmonic surfaces.

In this paper, a novel method of fingerprint minutiae extraction on grey-scale images is proposed based on the Gabor phase field. The novelty of our approach is that the proposed algorithm is performed on the transform domain, i.e. the Gabor phase field of the fingerprint image. This is different from most existing minutiae extraction methods, in which the minutiae are usually extracted from the binarized and thinned fingerprint image. Experimental results on benchmark data sets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has promising performances.

In this paper, we address the reference model adaptive neural network control problem for a class of switched nonlinear singular systems under the case of single input and multiple inputs. Based on RBF neural network, the state tracking controller and a switching strategy are designed so that switched nonlinear singular system can asymptotically track the desired reference model. It shows that RBF neural network are used to approximate the positive nonlinear unknown function. The approximation errors of the RBF neural networks are introduced to the adaptive law in order to improve the performance of the whole systems. A simulation example is performed in support of the proposed neural control scheme.

We propose a novel Markovian segmentation model which takes into account edge information. By construction, the model uses only pairwise interactions and its energy is sub modular. Thus the exact energy minima is obtained via a max-flow/min-cut algorithm. The method has been quantitatively evaluated on synthetic images as well as on fluorescence microscopic images of live cells.

Under the framework, several global-local-model combination methods are proposed for activity recognition. The advantages of combining the global and local models are also analyzed in detail. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework can not only improve the recognition performance but also release the loads for parameter selection.

Cardiovascular interventions in the region of the aortic isthmus such as stent-grafting and vessel transposition introduce substantial changes in the deformation properties of the affected vessels. The changes play a fundamental role in the long-term prognosis for any such treatment, but are only poorly understood to date. We explore a fully automated method to quantify the deformation patterns of the thoracic aorta in gated computed tomography sequences. The aorta is segmented by a level set approach that accurately identifies the vessel lumen in each frame of the sequence. Consequently, landmarks on the vessel wall in each frame are registered using a probabilistic method. This allows for the measurement of global and local deformation properties. We evaluate our method on synthetic datasets and report first results of its application on real world data.

In order to solve the problem of image degradation caused by dust environments, an image degradation model considering multiple scattering factors caused by dust was first established using the first-order multiple scattering method. Then, a dark channel prior principle was applied to present an image restoration algorithm based on the image degradation model. Finally, a particle swarm optimization algorithm was applied to optimize the atmospheric light and the exposure parameters. This optimization algorithm was established according to the criterion of the image evaluation based on kirsch operator with dual threshold. By using the method an optimistic result of image restoration was obtained. The experimental results have shown that the method not only enhanced luminance and contrast, but also discovered more detail edges information. The method provided a foundation for target recognition in the dust environments.
