China in 1982. He attended the University of Tokyo Japan where he received his Master's and Ph.D. degrees in 1986 and 1989 respectively. All his degrees are in Electrical Engineering. He worked for one year in the Hitachi research Laboratory Japan and for more than one year in Ohio State University U.S.A. as a Visiting Scholar. In 1991 he joined the National University of Singapore and is currently an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research interests lie in the fields of learning control variable structure control fuzzy logic control discontinuous signal processing and applications to motion control and process control problems. He is the associate editor of Asian Journal of Control member of TC on variable structure systems and sliding mode control of IEEE Control Systems Society and a senior member of IEEE. He has produced more than 90 peer-refereed journal papers near 160 technical papers in conference proceedings and authored/edited 4 books. An information-theoretic approach is used to determine the amount of information that may be safely transferred over a steganographic channel with a passive adversary. A steganographic channel, or stego-channel is a pair consisting of the channel transition probabilities and a detection function. When a message is sent, it first encounters a distortion (due to the channel), then is subject to inspection by a passive adversary (using the detection function). This paper presents results on the amount of information that may be transferred over an arbitrary stego-channel with vanishing probabilities of error and detection. Copyright 2005 ACM.

The separation of noisy image is a very exciting area of research, especially when no prior information is available about the noisy image. In this paper, we propose a robust independent component analysis (ICA) network for separation images contaminated with high-level additive noise or outliers. We reduce the power of additive noise by adding outlier rejection rule in ICA. Extensive computer simulations confirm robustness and the excellent performance of the resulting algorithms.

In this paper, we present the modeling schemes of a class of Bézier surface with negative Gaussian curvature over the rectangular domain and the triangular domain. We have proved that the surface over the rectangular domain is fully determined by the control points of the two opposed boundary curves, and the surface over the triangular domain is fully determined by the control points on the first and second layers. In particular, we can control the shape of the surface by the shape parameter, which increases the degree of freedom of surface modeling.

A model of one-dimensional photonic crystal laser with four-energy-level gain media is presented. The model consists of Maxwell-Bloch equations coupled with rate equations of electronic population in a photonic crystal laser system. The discretization of coupled equations is accomplished with finite different time domain (FDTD). Spectra, lasing mode, lasing threshold and dynamics of the photonic crystal laser are obtained. The simulation shows good agreement with theoretical predictions.

A supervised learning method for image classification is presented which is independent of the type of images that will be processed. This is realized by constructing a large base of grey-value and colour based image features. We then rely on a decision tree to choose the features that are most relevant for a given application.
