In this paper we discuss landmark based absolute localization of tiny autonomous mobile robots in a known environment. Landmark features are naturally occurring as it is not allowed to modify the environment with special navigational aids. These features are sparse in our application domain and are frequently occluded by other robots. This makes simultaneous acquisition of two or more landmarks difficult. Therefore, we propose a system that requires a single landmark feature. The algorithm is based on range measurement of a single landmark from two arbitrary points whose displacement can be measured using dead-reckoning sensors. Range estimation is done with a stereo vision system. Simulation results show that the robot can localize itself if it can estimates range of the same landmark from two different position and if the displacement between the two position is known.

In this paper active feature models are proposed. They utilize local texture features and a statistical shape model for the reliable localization of landmarks in images. They are related to active appearance models, but instead of modelling the entire texture of an object they represent image texture by means of local descriptors. The approach has advantages with complex image data like anatomical structures that exhibit high texture variation with limited relevance for the recognition of the object location. Experimental results and the comparison to AAMs on different data sets indicate that active feature models can improve search speed and result accuracy, considerably

Fast block-matching algorithm based on variable shape search

Block-matching motion estimation plays an important role in video coding. The simple and efficient fast block-matching algorithm using Variable Shape Search (VSS) proposed in this paper is based on diamond search and hexagon search. The initial big diamond search is designed to fit the directional centre-biased characteristics of the real-world video sequence, and the directional hexagon search is designed to identify a small region where the best motion vector is expected to locate. Finally, the small diamond search is used to select the best motion vector in the located small region. Experimental results showed that the proposed VSS algorithm can significantly reduce the computational complexity, and provide competitive computational speedup with similar distortion performance as compared with the popular Diamond-based Search (DS) algorithm in the MPEG-4 Simple Profile.

In this paper, we propose a personal verification method using both face and speech to improve the rate of single biometric verification. False acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR) have been a fundamental bottleneck of real-time personal verification. The proposed multimodal biometric method is to improve both verification rate and reliability in real-time by overcoming technical limitations of single biometric verification methods. The proposed method uses principal component analysis (PCA) for face recognition and hidden markov model (HMM) for speech recognition. It also uses fuzzy logic for the final decision of personal verification. Based on experimental results, the proposed system can reduce FAR down to 0.0001%, which provides that the proposed method overcomes the limitation of single biometric system and provides stable personal verification in real-time.

This paper discusses a novel step by step path planning method which uses genetic algorithm (GA) to find the feasible and suitable paths in an environment with static and dynamic obstacles. To increase the speed of calculations, dimension of the search space is reduced by developing a new method to represent the environment. This representation method is based on detecting the corners of circumferential polygons of all obstacles as representatives of the environment. Each individual (or path) is a subsequence of these points including the start and destination points as the first and last genes in the sequence. Thus, each individual will be of a variable length. If an individual represents a path which passes over some obstacles, it will be unfeasible; otherwise it represents a feasible path. To produce new generations, four evolutionary operators are defined. The goal is to find a short feasible path, which clearly is not unique. In addition, using a step by step path planning approach and updating the representation of the environment at each step will result in a robust performance of the algorithm in two dimensional (2D) static and dynamic environments.

In the area of geophysical and mining engineering the solution of partial differential equations (PDE) has been one of the most important problems of mathematics for a long time. Inside that one of the most exciting fields is the simulation of geothermal processes which can be used in the everyday energy-management. In this contribution a CNN-UM simulation of water reinjection are presented. To infrared images, the contrast of target and background is low, dim small targets have no concrete shapes and their textures cannot be reliable predicted. The paper puts forward a novel algorithm to fuse mid-wave and long-wave infrared images and detect targets. Firstly, the source images are decomposed by wavelet transformation. In usual, targets in infrared images are man-made, and their fractal dimension is different comparing with natural background. In wavelet transformation domain high-frequency part, we calculate local fractal dimension and set up fusion rule to merge corresponding sub-images of two matching source images. In low-frequency, we extract local maximum gray level to fuse them. Then reconstruct image by wavelet inverse transformation and obtain fused result image. In fusion results, the contrast between targets and background has obvious changes. And targets can be detected using contrast thresholding. The experimental results show that the method using fractal dimension to fuse dualband infrared images, and then detect targets is superior to use mid-wave or long -wave infrared images detect targets alone.
