We present a method for the estimation of the filtering properties of living tissue from the experimental output data stimulated by inputting sinusoidal electric signals through intramuscular electrodes in the lower leg muscle. This method is based on approximating the tissue filter by a rational transfer function. The estimation procedure consists of three parts: estimation of frequency response from sinusoidal input and output data using a correlation method, recursive weighted least square (RWLS) estimation to synthesize a continuous transfer function from the frequency response data and discretization of the transfer function. The estimated "tissue filter" is then used in recovering the intramuscular signal from the surface signal. An example of inverse filtering real EMG waveforms using the estimated tissue filter is given.

We present a method for the estimation of intramuscular electromyographic (EMG) signals from the given surface EMG signals. This method is based on representing the surface EMG signal as an autoregressive (AR) time series model with a delayed intramuscular EMG signal as an input. Assuming that prototypes of intramuscular and surface EMG signals are available, the parameters of the time series model that transforms the intramuscular signal to the surface signal are identified. The identified model is then used in estimating the intramuscular signal from the surface signal. This method is illustrated using real EMG waveforms.

A common task in image analysis is that of measuring image properties within local windows. Often usefulness of these property estimates is determined by characteristics of the windows themselves. Critical factors include the window size and shape, and the contribution the window makes to the cost of computation, A highly efficient procedure for computing property estimates within Gaussian-like windows is described. A technique of edge detection and line finding for linear feature extraction is described. Edge detection is by convolution with small edge-like masks. The resulting output is thinned and linked by using edge positions and orientations and approximated by piecewise linear segments. The problem of recognition of objects in images is investigated from the simultaneous viewpoint of image bandwidth compression and automatic target recognition. A hypothetical scenario is suggested in which recognition is implemented on features in the block cosine transform domain which is useful for data compression as well. Useful features from this cosine domain are developed based upon correlation parameters and homogeneity measures which appear to discriminate successfully between natural and man-made objects. The Bhattacharyya feature discriminator is used to provide a 10:1 compression of the feature space for implementation of simple statistical decision surfaces (Gaussian classification).
