Optimum design technique for optoelectronic devices using simulated annealing

A new procedure for the optimum design of optoelectronic devices is explained in this paper and an automatic search is made simultaneously for the structure satisfying various demands. The feature of this procedure is in the introduction of cost by which the quantitative evaluation of the structure becomes possible and the global search for the required structure by simulated annealing can be carried out. First, the definition of cost and details of the optimization procedure are clarified. In optimization, in addition to convergence to the minimum point of the cost function (the optimum configuration from theoretical viewpoint), the convergence also is possible in structures with great tolerance to fabrication errors (neighborhood cost (NC) and finite temperature annealing (FTA) methods). Next, these three proposed methods are used in the design of a pnpn differential optical switch and the effectiveness of the methods is verified. The method of cost expression, the relation between annealing parameters, and convergence are investigated. It is shown that cost expression with large degree of freedom improves the search for high-performance structures and the initial temperature of annealing or the fixed temperature of FTA method is the important parameter which sets up the probability of acceptance. Further, it is shown that the convergence cost is inversely proportional to the time spent in annealing. These results are useful guidelines in the optimum design of arbitrary optoelectronic devices.

In this article a new concept for real time analysis of images based on the vectorized contours is presented. Given the polygone approximation of contours the geometric moments can be formulated for line contours. The resulting line moments (LM’s) can be calculated for an arbitrary collection of contour fragments. Neither the existence of an area nor a closed contour is prerequisite to characterize an object by line moments. Due to these properties of the LM’s time consuming preprocessing of noisy object contours is not required. Even objects with structured surfaces can be characterized by LM’s. The formalism to apply the geometric moments to contour patterns is derived. A direct and a recursive algorithm to efficiently compute the LM’s is given. As an application of the LM’s an analysis system for structured textures is presented and results are discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1995.

The extended system BioX ++ facilitates the transparent generation of process control strategies and sequences based on automatically self-organized structured proces· models. Experimental results showing the increased product yield and the discussion of approach-specific problems are part of this paper as well as the new approaches actually examined.

In 1988 he received a Shinohara Commemorative Science Encouragement Prize and in 1992 a Best Paper Award. He is the author of the bookIntroduction to Record Data Compression Algorithms. He is a member of the Measurement Control Society and the Society for Information Theory and Its Applications.

Cryptology provides the technological basis for guaranteed network security. In the field of business, to guarantee the security of information, everyone needs easy-to-use cryptology. Starting with the announcement by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards of the DES cryptosystem and the proposal by NTT of the FEAL cryptosystem, secret-key cryptographic algorithms have been published, involution-type block cryptosystems which use secret key to encipher 64 bits of plain text as 64 bits of cipher text [2, 3, 9, 10, 12]. NTT has proposed the one-way function MAP, which is also an involution-type transform. In this paper, we study a new cryptanalytic method for involution-type cryptosystems and show by example that it can be applied practically in a ciphertext-only attack on the one-way function MAP. For an involution-type cryptosystem, by increasing the amount of construction in the data-randomization phase and by increasing the size of the secret key, we can guarantee the computational security by preventing the estimation of the secret key. However, if we study the properties of the function used in the design of the data-randomization phase, by specifying input/output values of the function which are independent of the secret key, it may be possible to use the inverse function [11] to calculate the secret key. This method is called the intermediate cipher method. The intermediate cipher method differs from previous methods in the small quantity of data required for breaking.

Because of its capability of high-speed search, the associative memory (CAM) is expected to be used in a variety of information processing systems. In this paper, novel fault-tolerant techniques which are effective for on-line use are proposed for TLB which is an example of the application of CAM. First, fault and error models of the TLB consisting of the CAM part and the SRAM part are clarified. Then, the fault-tolerant techniques for these faults and errors, such as distance separable technique, cod-ing technique, simplified 1-out-of-n check and graceful degradation, are proposed. The distance separable technique which encodes the data stored in the CAM part is the one which masks the faulty CAM part and prevents errors from propagating to the subsequent circuits. The coding technique checks the one-to-one correspondence between the data in the CAM and those in SRAM by using the SEC-DED code with byte error detection capability, i.e., SEC-DED-SbED code, and at the same time it detects and corrects errors in the data stored in SRAM. The simplified 1-out-of-n check processes association errors. The graceful degradation gives a flag in the faulty memory section and prevents it from being used. The methods proposed in this paper are evaluated from area augmentation and error detection capability perspectives. The results show that the fault-tolerant TLB with 32 virtual address bits, 32 physical address bits and 128 entries gives single fault detection probability of nearly 99 percent with 28 percent area increase.

This paper describes a solution for the general problem of handling a multiple-bent profile of sheet metal in the constrained environment of a bending machine. The handling device is a robot feeding the machine and handling the sheet metal in between the bending operations. A new planning approach for a multiple-bent profile handling which is based on the configuration space and a potential function is presented. Special heuristics for the multiple-bent profile are applied and accelerate the motion planning process by recognition of the critical part of the profile and its orientation and position relative to the bending machine. This approach assists the sheet metal part planner to plan in advance the handling operations and to confirm if the robot can perform the handling or not. Two examples of handling multiple-bent profiles inside a bending machine are described and demonstrate the overall approach by a simulation.

This work presents an associative datafield structure that has been developed for automotive control applications by the institute of control engineering, Department of control Systems theory and Robotics at the Technical University of Darmstadt and the Robert Bosch GmbH. In contrast to the state-of-the-art lattice-like datafields, the new system permits the modelling of multidimensional nonlinear process and/or controller characteristics with respect to computational performance and storage capacity provided by automotive control units. Furthermore, the associative datafield allows the compensation of wear and tear and manufacturing tolerances by learning, i.e. online adaptation of its contents. The paper describes the principles of the associative datafield and different update algorithms. Results of simulations using realistic data from car engines are discussed.< >

An implementation of a 16 state, rate 8/9 six-dimensional (6-D) 8PSK rotationally invariant trellis decoder for use in a concatenated codec is described. The concatenated codec allows transmission of STM-1 signals (at the 155.52 Mb/s information rate) over a 72 MHz satellite transponder. The inner trellis decoder is used with an outer (255,239) RS block decoder. The trellis decoder operates at 165.93 Mb/s and currently has an implementation loss of only 0.2 dB. The concatenated codec achieves a bit error ratio of 10(-10) at an E(b)/N-0 of 8.2 dB (assuming an ideal modem and AWGN channel). Details are given of many Viterbi decoding 'tricks' that were used in order to implement the main functions of the decoder on two 10,000 gate equivalent CMOS programmable gate arrays.
