A nonlinear parabolic heat conduction equation with a source is discussed, for which solutions of the heat wave propagating against a cold background at a finite velocity are studied. A new theorem of the existence and uniqueness of heat waves is proved. A particular case is studied in detail, when the heat wave is invariant and its construction reduces to solving an ordinary differential equation. For the numerical construction of invariant heat waves, an algorithm based on the boundary element method is proposed. Test examples are solved.

Model predictive control is a means to transit a nonlinear dynamic system from its current towards a target state subject to state and control constraints. A model-predictive controller based on Timed-Elastic-Bands (TEB-MPC) is particular suitable for time-optimal control. This contribution investigates the convergence behavior of the sparse TEB-MPC approach on two non-trivial benchmark systems under limited computational resources. It evaluates the trade-off between accuracy of the approximate optimal solution and computational efficiency. An alternative formulation of the original TEB-MPC with local transition intervals results in a higher dimensional but albeit banded problem structure. Furthermore, both formulations are compared for two different solvers, an unconstrained least-squares optimization and a primary nonlinear program. For low sampling times the former exhibits a faster rate of convergence, however the later is already superior for medium sample times. In practice, the selection of TEB-MPC realizations depends on the order and complexity of the dynamic systems contrasted with the computational resources and demands on real-time control.

When in an ensemble of oscillatory units the interaction occurs through a diffusion-like manner, the intrinsic oscillations can be quenched through two structurally different scenarios: amplitude death (AD) and oscillation death (OD). Unveiling the underlying principles of stable rhythmic activity against AD and OD is a challenging issue of substantial practical significance. Here, by developing a low-pass filter (LPF) to track the output signals of the local system in the coupling, we show that it can revoke both AD and OD, and even the AD to OD transition, thereby giving rise to oscillations in coupled nonlinear oscillators under diverse death scenarios. The effectiveness of the local LPF is proven to be valid in an arbitrary network of coupled oscillators with distributed propagation delays. The constructive role of the local LPF in revoking deaths provides a potential dynamic mechanism of sustaining a reliable rhythmicity in real-world systems.

Algorithms for situation interpretation and prediction in traffic environments are essential in order to face automated driving challenges successfully. At the same time it is hardly possible to guarantee the functionality of such algorithms in every imaginable situation. In order to cope with such problems, the common approach in practice is to apply exhaustive and time consuming evaluation in real traffic situations. In this contribution a driving environment simulation is presented that is suited for the simulation of various highway scenarios and the generation of simulation data comparable to the output of a physical sensor data fusion architecture in real highway situations. The simulation models the dynamics of traffic flow augmented with a data based model to account for perception uncertainties. Finally a sample traffic scenario and the generated simulation output is presented.

The paper at hand proposes a real-time capable approach to combined trajectory planning and control. One single prediction model is used to plan a feasible trajectory and to perform lateral guidance of the vehicle at the same time. Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) methods are applied to solve the optimal control problem, which incorporates environmental constraints leading to a model predictive planning and control approach (MPPC). Experiments are conducted utilizing a rapid prototyping system. The analysis shows the versatile application range of the developed algorithm, such as challenging emergency evasive maneuvers as well as automated steering as an approach to lateral guidance of the vehicle in general.

Depth image-based rendering (DIBR), which is used to render virtual views with a color image and the corresponding depth map, is one of the key techniques in the 2D to 3D conversion process. One of the main problems in DIBR is how to reduce holes that occur on the generated virtual view images. In this paper, a region-wise rendering framework, which divides the original image regions into three special classes and renders each with optimal adaptive process respectively, is introduced. With the optimized region-wise processing, kinds of existing DIBR methods can be combined together to achieve better visual rendering results. Numerical experimental results demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method.
